Jewel - large article - Mail On Sunday 14.3.99 Hi Guys, Rush out and buy Mail On Sunday today, there's a huge Jewel article in the "Night And Day" magazine. I think there's some new photos, and some new inaccuracies. ;) Anyway, 6 pages of Jewel are worth £1 so go buy it! You are all coming out of the woodwork now aren't you vets? Jeez it's like reminiscing city. Everyone's posting saying how it should or shouldn't be maderated, how they wish the posts had meaning. If you never wanted so many "meaningless" people on this list then why is it open to the public? If people like Sean "saw this coming" then why didn't you tell Mike to start a ban on newbies coming in after Jewel sold her first million albums? I know what's going to happen anyway. After a few years Jewel is going to become unpopular, and all of the people on this list who just like her because everyone else does will piss off and leave the real fans who still like her - produced or not produced - to talk and be meaningful about Jewel's new releases that not so many people will buy, and go to gatherings together like "the old days". Well that's my theory. It's probably totally wack but well that's me! I would love for the list to go back to being fun and having all the humorous posts and all - I joined the list only a few weeks before moderation so I don't know too much about it! Maybe Mike will decide to unmoderate it again, and eventually it will start to improve after our first few days of 200 mad posts, 100 funny posts, and 2 Jewel-related posts? Who knows??? Guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens to the list eh? And I don't skim posts - I read them all and some of them actually are meaningful and interesting. Maybe the vets should start looking more carefully? Anyways at the time I didn't notice anything but how funky and cool it was but when I got my photos back I thought WOW I've seen that singlet top on Jewel somewhere before. So I got home from Sydney and looked in my "Jewel An Everyday Angel" book at the color pics and I found what I was looking for!! Jewel wore the same funky singlet top at the Blockbuster Rock Festival. It must be a favorite of hers if she's kept it for so long. Oh and well you can see her midriff when she wears that top and she had a little tatoo around her belly button. Obviously a removable one but it looked cool nonetheless. Okay that's all I wanted to say, just thought it was cool. My Fellow EDAs, I know not what qualification I should give as to my tenure here on the list, but suffice it to say I have been here quite a while and hosted/participated in my fair share of EDA frolicings. The nature of this list, for me, has never changed. It struck me when I first joined (just missed jewelstock ..damn..I dated myself and wasn't gonna do it) how incredibly easy it was to connect with everyone. Just an email and you not only had more tapes and discussion than you could handle, but there were the people your first contact knew welcoming you as well. There was this illusion that we all knew each other..or could count on connecting as if we did...thru mutual friends or just our common love of a gifted musician and Gatherings on BOTH coasts flourished (yes they DO happen on the WEST coast). I think to some degree that what was lost was not the real spirit or intimacy of the list...but this kind of naive trust of the list and all its members to be part of the total EDA experience. The eventual size and content shifts on the list made it seem foreign and actually an effort to connect as we once so easily did in our small community. "I never see so and so post" or "There is to much _____ on the list" are common things I have heard stated by disgruntled EDAs as to why they feel lost to the list...and yet...where is the effort in these statments to balance the negative aspects or call out those long lurking members? I admit to a great deal of guilt over not being involved...but to claim the spirit isn't here because the list is not something it once was percieved as being ...thats just giving up. If you miss the ringleaders of old and what they did for the list...THEN BE A RINGLEADER....call a GATHERING......YOU post what you want to see more of on the list....Miss the intimacy? try the EDA-thoughts list and read some of the poems and discussion material there (it might remind some of us what a list for the members thoughts was like).......REACH out your hand and see how many people reach back...don't just stop because you can't count on all the hands and faces to be the same safe familar ones we know.I as well see a great deal of what I consider "noise posting" but so what...delete works fine as I know the content will eventually justify my effort. Just of Late here in SoCalifornia the EDAs have put together a mailing list to connect the SoCal EDAs and I am ashamed at having not thought of it first....For a long time I wistfully yearned for the exploits of those on the east coast(pudding fights, purple bears, random sheep noises, etc) until I realized I COULD DO THAT HERE! Gatherings soon ensued and I have friends and memories I owe only to this list and no other source....the heart isn't in this mailing list...it is in YOU and only if you share it will you see it in the listand if you don't..well...share again and at least you tried...I guess thats enough rambling from me...One more thing...if were you ever on the west coast for a gathering and haven't had my tacos...you wasted a trip ;) "Be the change you want to see in the world." I think that some angels are making this bigger than it >is. To say that a list as large as this cannot be intimite and full of >laughter is just strange to me. I mean, I have made friends with many >angels who have just joined the list and all are eager in joining. I I totally agree with Rachel here! I mean I'm in a service fraternity(Alpha Phi Omega) and we have a national social topics list. We have about 900 on the list I believe and we seriously get friendly. There are a quite a few of us from across the country that post rather frequently and there are others though that sit back and observe from afar. I really don't see why this list can't be the community that it was when I joined. I've also made a number of friends off of list list too. You are who you make your friends to be...Gee..why does that sound like a song or poem lyric to me? hehe Oh well, no prob. Anyhow, I hope I made my point :) As for the other part of my subject...I have yet to see the DSL video...and although it's not gonna make me cry and pout and stuff if I don't ever see it, I kinda sorta would like to see it. Does someone know a definite time on either VH1 or MTV that I can watch(tape it if I'm not here) it...OR maybe if there's an AVI or Quicktime version of it, I could download and watch it. I watched(or tried to at least) it in Realvideo. The song got through but the video like updated about 3 times the whole video which didn't help for my viewing experience. So if someone knows a way...can you please respond? Thanks a bunch! Hello peoples, Well I have finally worked out the continuity through Jewels Setlist for the Spirit concerts in Sydney, probably for the ones in Australia, and dare I say it.... the setlist for the Spirit world tour. So here we go.... Jewel opens playing solo accoustic with either: Don't (for the first 3 syd concerts) or Near You Always (final syd concert) Enter the band: Deep water What's Simple is True Hands Jupiter You Were Meant For Me (where Jewel might or might not tell the story, In this case she did and it went really long, for around 8 or so minutes mainly paying out on Steve). Band then Leaves: This is where Jewel mixes it up a bit and sometimes takes request! She'll play about four songs. 1st Syd: 1. Passing Time 2. Cold song 3. Enter From the East 4. Life Uncommon 2nd syd: 1. Morning Song 2. Pieces of you (with the story at the modelling convention) 3. Innocence Maintained 4. Grey Matter (said it was a new song, but we know better now don't we) 3rd syd: 1. Morning Song 2. * I'll need help with this next one (I'm almost ashamed to say), a beautiful song which is her Fathers favourite, I think it's called 'a country song' (if anyone knows please mail me). 3. Innocence Maintained 4. Grey Matter 4th syd: Now I really need help with this because my recorder had a faulty MD in it for most of Jewels set, Dammit! (BASF are going to cop an earful from me). But she did play 'Sometimes it be That Way" after it was requested by an EDA (onya Khoi). and She rejected 'A Boy Needs a Bike' Because she said she couldn't remember the words, and then said something along the lines of "I only write the songs, you don't expect me to remember them?!?". Re-enter the band: Barcelona Foolish Games Down So Long (where Doug. P plays an awesome guitar solo) At this stage Jewel Calls everyone to stand and come to the front of the stage: Down Love me Just Leave Me Alone Who Will Save Your Soul (Kick ass ten minute version where Jewel just goes crazy on the scat) 1st encore: Abscence of Fear (1st & 3rd show) Angel standing By (1st show) Summertime (3rd & 4th show) 2nd Encore: Angel Standing By (2nd & 4th show) Chime Bells (1st & 4th Show) Well That's pretty much how it goes, they have the setlist right there in font of them on the stage. later, - -Sang. Jean has already voiced out most of what I wanted to say, but I'll like to add something. I know nothing I say will change Sean's perspective of Singapore (except maybe ask him to come over to Singapore for a visit) so I'll take it from another angle... Such a post is really something unnecessary, something which I think harms this list and only reinforces the need for regulation, which I gather from recent mails, isn't very popular with most people on the list. Knowing that there are a few Singaporeans subscribed, he should have at least exercised some restrain in his comments. For example, I personally wouldn't mind if he took it from a 'questioning' perspective instead of a 'I-force-it-on-you' kinda perspective. Especially since he haven't been to Singapore before (I assume). At least then, this thing won't turn into an "I right, You wrong" situation. It'll be more of a discussion instead. Get what I mean? I don't want to say too much about this, as I know most of the people on this list won't be interested, so that's all :) regards, Jason ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 09:15:57 PST From: "Sang-Wun Kim" Subject: SJC: Poltz setlists, Sangs 1 other big post Hi Again, Steve is so cool, I think he deserves a mention. So here are his setlist for the 4 Sydney shows with Jewel at the State Theatre. 1st syd (9th March): - -10 chances - -Silver Lining - -I thought I saw you last Night (with Jewel) - -Everything About you - -Star Wars Song - -'26' - -ABCs 2nd Syd (10th March): - -10 Chances - -Dog Doo Blues (taken from independently released album 'Answering - -machine messages') - -Everything about you - -Beautiful Day - -'26' (here Doug.P comes out to play slide guitar and Steve introduces him as Jimmy Walker? I found it funny, no-one else got it). - -Burn Down Planet Hollywood - in Sydney (impromvised) - -Kicking distance Of Your Heart - -Star Wars Song - -ABCs 3rd Syd Concert (12th March) - -10 chances - -Fiona (improvised, someone in the audience) - -Everything about you - -The Tree Hugger Song - -26 - -Kicking Distance - -Silver Lining (speaks of how this was the other song written with Jewel in Mexico and he chose this one to be on his album because he said after they wrote YWMFM he remembers saying, "That's stupid! you can have that one Jewel and then it ends up number 1 on the charts. Typical of my stupid life and the mistakes I've made".) - -Star Wars Song - -Forbidden Fruit ( he Sang this because I asked him to the night after the 2nd syd concert, and he said he would remember to and he did. It was the onlty time he sang it in Sydney, steve Rocks!) - -ABCs 4th Syd Concert (13th March): - -10 Chances - -I love you (I think, unfinished song, sung partly in French) - -Lock Jaw - -Golds Gym Guy - -26 - -Kicking distance - -Silver Lining - -Star Wars Song - -Everything About You - -ABCs Now on this night, Steve was a total wreck. Anyone who hadn't seen him before would think he was awesome, which he was. BUT You can only go out after gigs so many times until it starts affecting your performances and tonight he was struggling to hold himself together. couldn't hit those high notes with his rusted throat, sounded very flat and his timing and finger picking was all out. I was really feeling for the mann he was Battling all the way. He even wore the same clothes as the night before he perfomed in and admitted to sleeping in them as well. When it was time to Play the intro to YWMFM with Jewel he had a slight lapse in concentration and had to start again and then the second time round he was out of time. All the band members had big grins on their faces. When the spotlight was on Jewel I could see Poltz Sitting down Massaging his forehead, he was in pain. But he fought to the end. Anyways, two of my favourite quotes of the syd tour: Jewel: "Chics don't dig Bullet Wounds, really...... Chics dig those cute legs (looking at Steve) over bullet wounds anyday". Steve pulls his pants legs up to show them off. Steve: -"I'm a spent peice of used jet trash right now", referring to his condition on Saturday night). -"Thanks for listening to my set, I 'm sorry I suck so Bad...". -".....Hanging out at that STUPID bar I LOVE so much", ('round midnight' in Kings Cross). That's way more than enough from me, later all, - -Sang. still on high ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #125 ***************************
