She recorded it four months ago before Spirit was released. It has only showed a performance of "Hands" with the old band, not the one she's touring with. It hasn't been a not-to-miss performance. But we, Spanish EDAs, have had to wait FOUR months for it. Can you believe it? Take care, Dani Barcelona EDA friend ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Mar 1999 16:44:42 -0800 (PST) From: Mr BabyTank Subject: Jewel : My Angel Hello! Jewel performed at the Palais last night, and for the second time in a week, I was there to see her. The first show was more intimate, with Jewel matching the quieter crowd, while last night, with lots of younger female fans in the audience, Jewel took the tempo up a notch, playing lots of more upbeat, rock tunes, some of which were tracks that were unreleased. With half an hour to go, Jewel stopped suddenly, and decided that things weren't quite as good as they could be. She paused, and spoke "You know, this isn't right. This is meant to be like a rock concert, and you people up the back are too far away. You people in the back row, why don't you come down the front and sit in the aisles. As it was last night, I was in the back row, because I had managed to talk the box office lady to squeeze me into what actually was already a sold out show, so at the invitation from Jewel, me and this other guy I was with leapt up and moved rapidly down to the front, but no pushing of course, because this was a more gentile crowd, more refined and reserved. To push forward roughly and violently was out of place, especially in the presence of Jewel on stage. So there we were, relatively close to the front, but not as close as third row, where I was seated last Thursday week ago. So then Jewel and the band kicked into some tunes, including Down So Long, Love you but Leave me Alone and Who Will Save Your Soul, upon which the show closed on. But how could they resist, all the cheering, clapping and noise we were making, so Jewel and her keyboardist came back out, to sing the ballad Absence of Fear, a beautiful rendition of a song which, to me, is about feeling peaceful, safe, loved and wanting you, here with me, to share this moment, in the absence of fear. Jewel is so beautiful in person, it was unbelievable that she was even up there. So after Absence of Fear, Jewel went off again, but we couldn't let her go, just like that, so we all rallied, and urged her to return, which she did, to welcoming and rousing applause. The atmosphere was all there, because practically majority of the crowd were packed close up to the stage. It was after the concert finished that I realised, and felt sorry for the fans up in the balcony, who were unable to join the rest of us, up the front. Anyway, Jewel came out, by herself, picked up an acoustic guitar, and proceeded to sing, alone out there, in a mental-burning fashion, track 13 off Pieces of You, a personal favourite of mine, the song Angel Standing By. It was such a lasting image, Jewel, alone on a dark stage, with the greeny-yellowy spotlights on her, with guitar in hand, gently soaring up to the heights of the songwords, "Be there baby, telling you, you're never nothing less than beautiful!" It is something I will recall, again and again, in the future, when life will challenge me with sorrow, sadness, despair, heartache, loneliness, fear ... whenever I need her, Jewel will be there, my Angel, watching over me, ensuring that for the rest of my life, I will never truly be alone, even in my darkest moments, when I feel totally alienated, with my world crumbling around me. But hopefully that will never happen, I was just trying to express the moment to all of you, my good good friends! There were so many moments in the concert, the feeling you get, with the stage fully lit in bright orange, yellow, red lighting, and the spotlight shining out at you in the crowd, with the band in full swing, and Jewel's voice soaring above it all, "Won't somebody please hold me, release me show me, the meaning of mercy, let me Fly!" When the aching ramblings of piano came on, for the intro to Foolish Games, I didn't cry, but my eyes did moisten, and despite what you may here, or what you may think or say about the song, being there, listening to her sing, the emotion in her voice, and in her eyes, on her face, there is real pain and experience behind that song, undeniably. And the song she closed on, Chime Bells, when she began Yodelling, you could not help feeling in awe of the talent she had, and laugh and marvel at the yodelling, with all the fans packed close up the front, the sense of togetherness, all there with one focus, the golden angel Jewel up on stage, the cheering, just the feeling, was unforgettable. And not only that, but I made a new friend last night too, and heard the most amazing story you could ever hear. Like my new friend said last night, "I don't care, I don't give a f***, I am going to go to every f***ing concert Jewel does over here". This guy, Lee, has been to Tool, Metallica, Garth Brooks, Mariah Carey, Smashing Pumpkins, Silverchair and many more, but last night, far and away, no competition, Lee said that Jewel's show was fair dinkum, the best show he had ever seen. Lucky me, I got to see the greatest show on earth twice! Hope everyone who read this had the best of a day, a great night, and a top life. You are all my friends, and I thank you for your time. Just thought I would agree with everybody who really doesn't like the video. I know that the point of this cd is that it is with "the band" but I really didn't like her not being solo. Of course, if steve is in it, that is ok, but i really don't like the entire ensemble in there. Her video reminded me of a video for "no doubt" or "hole" rather than jewel. (in case you cant' tell, i don't like no doubt of hole :) Well, now it's time to disagree with most everyone. I LOVED the hands video. I don't like the song too much, it is my least fav on the cd, but the video, in my opinion, was great. Another thing, I just finished Can't Hardly Wait last night for the first time. I'm not sure if this has been posted before, because I was not on the list when the movie first came out, but at the beginning, when the introduce all the characters, they do a little bio on them. Anyway, one of the main characters had a jewel lyric for their personal quote. it was "i'd rather see the world from another angle" I was surprised by it. I also think it's kinda funny that our name came from the line right after that (we are everyday angels). I know it's not interesting, but i thought i might just let you all know. If anybody knows anything about that, or if you know if there actually is a whole book of the POY songs that I can buy, I would really appreciate it if they could tell me where I can get these. I think her answer to that question should be read a few more times by anyone that is dissapointed in Spirit, and thinks that Jewel has changed for the worse. I think we're getting way to worked up over nothing. After reading some of the Austrailian EDA's concert revues, it sounds like we're all gonna see the same Jewel putting on a great concert when we see her live. I had started thinking that she might have "changed" and let the fame go to her head. But I no longer think that is the case. I cant wait to see her live!!!! But after thinking about it, it grew on me. As was said before, the darkness represents the "Down So Long" part, and at the end she reached peace with herself in those beautiful scenes at the end. I totally agree with that. The "dark" part did get old after a while though. The video wasn't the best but it still was not a failure. Oh yea, did anybody else notice how bad the Real Player Version of the video was. Maybe it's just my computer, but it didn't look like a video it looked more like a slide show. At Alien Invasion (a personal fav Jewel site of mine) you can download it and it looks a lot better than off of JewelJK. It was so weird to watch it for the first time because it was so much like I thought it should be. I am in no way implying that my idea was used for the video. But it was neat that some of the ideas I had ended up being part of the video. Like I said that it should switch back and forth between whatever the "storyline" was to her playing DSL with the band. And I said that it should be sort of dark or rainy throughout and then at the end she could have found some sort of utopia. And they did have the rainclouds, and then she ended up in the snowy place. I kind of think maybe the snow represents Alaska to her, she always talks about how it is her favorite place to be; with the nature, and beauty and all. Oh yeah, this morning while I was listening to the radio, they started to play DSL. I heard the guitar and "doodoopeedowa" or whatever, and then the DJ says "here is the new one from TLC." I was thinking that was strange, then he said "oh wait a minute" and he stopped it and played TLC's new song. I listened for a while after that, but he never played DSL. I thought about calling but I couldn't remember the number. I'd like to know what pictures are in it, besides the >cover of Jewel laying on some flowers.. I think the Japanese version should be the same as the one used everywhere for the later on (since mid-97) POY releases... well, except for the States anyway as I think there's only ever been the original 1995 version available there... in New Zealand there's actually been four different versions out, the last two with the newer artwork... other than the cover shot from the FG single, the rest of the artwork is pretty much the same (I have the original version as well as one of the later on ones)... there's only two other different pictures and they are both replacements for some of the more dorky-looking pictures in the original... :-) OK, if you open the sleeve up and look on the lyric side, that one where she's jumping up in the air has been replaced with the pic from the cover of the European/Australasian YWMFM single (but instead of lying down they've put it upright which looks kinda odd when you know she's supposed to be lying down)... :-) now, look on the other side and that first picture you look at, where she's got her eyes closed, has been replaced with the pic from the cover of the UK WWSYS single... I *think* it was also used for the Australian one but strangely not for the New Zealand version... other than those changes, it's pretty much identical... :-) Kim Lees Your New Zealand Angel Standing By ICQ# 9270797 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ check out Kim's JEWEL Shrine... http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Stadium/7485/jewel.html includes a Real Audio section of over 100 songs - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Cause being in love just means calling places When you can’t afford the bill" Jewel Kilcher - "Tiny Love Spaces" (must get round to finding another quote one of the days...) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #104 ***************************
