One more thing - I just wanted to say that I loved The DSL video ( at first I was afraid I wouldn't be able to watch it due to some problems with my cable before the premiere) - I thought it captured her passion for music very well; I thought it was better than the hands video which is hard to say because I really liked the hands video as well. Anyway, just thought I'd let you know. Just a friendly reminder that everyone on this list can send a blank cassette & return postage to your EDA volunteers at the AngelFoodBank & get an excellent recording of "Jessica" FREE on "Future Folklore Volume 3". This rare Jewel song along with other artists' live recordings from the 1997 EDAF Thanksgiving Concert at Java Joe's in San Diego are featured on this. This concert/pajama party was attended by EDAs from all over North America in celebration of the EDA Foundation formation & featured many great San Diego artists & special guest Tara MacLean. Jewel surprised everyone by popping in for an unnanounced set, much to the amazement of the packed coffeehouse. The set included "Jessica" & "Lasciatemi Morrire", both of which are included on "FF3". Enjoy this & get turned on to many other excellent artists on FF3! For more information, complete tracklist or to sign up, go to: http://www.angelfoodbank.org/ Enjoy! Have any of you noticed that Hands is faster in the music video than it is on the cd single and album. I really liked all the dark images in the DSL video, b/c it fits the intro of the song. And as we all know, it gets cheerier at the end when she finds her little snow safe-haven. I loved, and laughed, when I first saw the part where jewel has her suitcase and the song goes "I take a trip, I catch a train, I catch a plane, I got a ticket in my hand..." That was kinda cute. She looked really nice throughout the video, and to be honest I thought it was so awesome that she actually showed her navel. The last couple of shots with her in the snow "oasis" are so classic. I love everything about the video. Oh, before I forget, I've been meaning to mention that Jewel's photo was in the current Starr tabloid. It's under a section called "wouldn't be caught dead in that" or something around those lines. The picture is of the same outfit/hairdo she had on for the last Letterman performance. It says something about her hair being ugly, and her outfit being very hideous (see, i wasn't the only one who thought she looked horrible!). ~lee ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Mar 1999 23:49:37 +0000 From: casper31@juno.com Subject: down so long video on web? is Jewels new video on the web anywhere so those of us with out cable can see it?? It had a photo of her on the screen. They were listing the 10 most beautiful people according to Roseanne. (I am now a big Roseanne fan) She was saying stuff like Jewel has the appearance of a philosopher and she has very nice eye's, and the regular stuff like that. Americans would have seen this eposoide by now, so its probally old news to you :) Just thought the Aussie's would get a kick out of it. Im still a little annoyed Jewel didnt get a interview on Hey Hey Its Saturday, she was coming over to talk to the host (daryl) i think, but they went on to some golfer. It seems that people either love it or are disappointed by it. At first I was a little miffed, Jewel looked like she was doing a Courtney Love impression in the video. Before you delete this, don't worry, I later realized, and maybe some of you did, that at the beginning everything, including Jewel's attire, was in shades of black, gray and blue. Later in the video Jewel was dressed in white with snow falling down on her in one little area while the rest of the area was covered by all this black stuff that looked like it could be ashes. Well, here's my interpretation of all this for all you people that think the video has no theme. All the black at the beginning of the video symbolize the "down so long" part of the song and how hard it was for her at the beginning of her life. The white snowy part showed that Jewel was now in heaven with things finally beginning to go right for her. The ash surrounding her snowy area represents everything wrong around her, but she is still fine. The video ends with Jewel in the snow looking up towards the camara. That's my thoughts on the subject, maybe I am just looking for a theme that's not really there, anyway that's it. Tippy "Love is love reflected" -Steven Tyler P.S. It is taken from the 'Herald Sun' newspaper, which is one of two major newspapers in Melbourne. Dave - the Aussie Angel >From the 'Herald Sun' - 4/3/99 (Kindly reprinted with no permission whatsoever!) - ---------------------------------------- Q&A with Jewel Q: There were reports that you didn't like your first album 'Pieces of You'? A: No. That was exaggerated by journalists. I love my first album. I just think it's strange that it did as well as it has. It's not a slick or glossy album, but that's one of its strengths. I think people just want to be touched, whether it's by me or Celine Dion or Meatloaf. Q: Are you happy with 'Spirit', your new album? A: Albums are strange. It's like if you see me wearing this on Tuesday you'll remember that, but I might wear something different the next day. Live performances are a lot more representative of what I do. Q: Do you think you're pigeon-holed as a neo-hippie or folksy-busker type? A: I'm only 24, I'm too young to be pigeonholed. Q: Do you ever feel like you want to rock out? A: I played a lot of electric and punk stuff in my live shows in America last year. Q: You've sold over five million albums, how do you deal with your success? A: I don't think it's to be taken too seriously. How you deal with it depends on who you surround yourself with. Sometimes it's like people want you to be a bitch, it's like training a dog, the more slack you give, the more they'll try to get away with. Q: Has having money changed you? A: What do you mean by that? Q: Have you changed as a person since you became financially secure? A: Money is nice, but it's strange. It's just there in my bank, this pile of money. I don't really know what to do with it. I bought my mom and I a house, but I still have my second-hand car. But I can't explain why I've got all this money and the homeless person next to me doesn't. I think God gave me money to give to other people. Q: You've got a part in the new Ang Lee movie 'Ride With the Devil', how did that come about? A: I got the part because I was right for the part. Q: So you auditioned for it? A: Of course. Ang Lee doesn't need a pop star in his movie. He's one of the best directors in the world. Q: Are you thinking of writing another book? A: Uh-huh. I'm doing one now. Q: More poetry? A: No. A collection of short stories. It's almost done. Q: What was the last record you bought? A: I got Elvis's greatest hits. I'd never really heard his music until recently. It's beautiful. Q: When was the last time you cried? A: None of your business. - ---------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Mar 1999 12:23:01 EST From: TFace151@aol.com Subject: DSL Here is my two cents and based on what everyone else has said about the new DLS video, I am gonna get some mail with my opinion. I hated the video. The only good part was that Jewel was playing the guitar. I thought it lacked creativity and plot. (not that all videos need to have a plot) There was no context with the song. The dark contrasted wtiht he upbeat style of the music. Also someone did a bad editiong job because there are many points were her lyps wer out of sync with the song. It appeared to be something they just slopped together. I also thought it bared astiking resemblence to the YWMFM video. (you know Jewel standing against a background singing) THe only difference was YWMFM had a plot. It related to the audience what the song had to say. I hate to say this, but to me DSL was just a whole bunch of sexy shots of Jewel and then her singing against a dark background. If you all liked it great, but I didn't care for it. I am not going to stop liking Jewel, but I think this video could have been a lot better. Just my humble opinion. Feel free to e mail your thoughts (I know you will anyway) Love, Teresa The confused for now angel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 05 Mar 1999 10:12:34 PST From: "Rebecca Smith" Subject: Down So Long Video opinion Hello to all, Adding to the sure-to-be multitudes of posts about the Down So Long video... I was disappointed. Am I the only one who has noticed that every video Jewel has done so far, with the exception of WWSYS, has that dark, blue tone dominating? While it is pretty and all, it's sort of depressing looking (which doesn't really fit her music), and is becoming (imho) sort of cliche. Halfway through the video, I realized that this rather melancholy look kind of went with the song's title, but I still didn't warm up to it much. While I thought that the performance shots were good, nothing about the video grabbed my attention as being clever or entertaining or thought provoking... it was just very blah. The little shots of her sort of dancing around and sitting on the floor wagging her feet were mildly cute and the only slight injection of personality into the whole thing, but that was about it. I guess it just left me wondering how someone so obviously full of creativity and life and personality could make a video so bland, uninspiring, and lacking in creativity. 'Course I still think she rocks, but at least I don't have to worry about sitting through all the annoying stuff mtv airs to try to catch another glimpse of it. Once was enough. Blessed Be, Rebecca :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #102 ***************************
