Re: "New" Jewel Debate Guys and gals....I hope you all read this post (see below) from Becca. For months now, people have been trying to figure out what's changed with Jewel, was it the sound, her status, her clothes, make-up, friendliness, attitude, etc., etc., or any combination of all those things. Then, after not having sent a single post in I don't know how long to this list, here comes Becca with this remarkably accurate post, pinpointing most of what this list has been debating over for months now. Too bad this letter wasn't sent back in October...it would have prevented about 500 letters coming through this list. This is a very good letter. So if you all haven't read it, then please do so. Becca is right on the money when she's describing what's "different" now with Jewel. Maybe this is what that question mark was regarding the recent Letterman performance. That "something" that just seemed different, or missing. Thanks a million Becca! It's refreshing to read letters like this, it's only unfortunate there aren't more of them passing through here. Thanks for de-lurking, and don't make yourself a stranger to the list anymore. :-) Derrick > ---------- > From: Rebecca Smith[SMTP:doggymommy@hotmail.com] > Sent: Monday, February 22, 1999 7:04 PM > To: jewel@smoe.org > Subject: "New" Jewel Debate > > Hello to all, > I finally decided to de-lurk and post my thoughts about the debate that > keeps on giving (hm, better than a Sports Illustrated subscription). :) > My thoughts on the matter (as with everything else) are continually > evolving, but here are my latest thoughts. I'd have to agree, although I love the songs on Spirit. But I love the way Jewel sings live, so I find myself constantly listening to POY and my angelfood, as opposed to Spirit. I think it would be so awesome, if Atlantic just forgot about putting Jewel in the studio, and just kept releasing live CDs. There's enough songs to put out at LEAST 10 "Jewel: Live in Concert" albums. And alot of those songs are some of her greatest works... can't even imagine them being studio recorded. cymbaline ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Feb 1999 17:54:05 -0800 From: "K.J. & A. Watkins is working on a book of poetry--though fans shouldn't expect it to be anything like Jewel's recent best-selling collection. "I don't even understand her poems," says Watkins. I love Jewel, But I don't understand what she's talking about. You'll be able to UNDERSTAND my poems, you know what I'm saying?" Erm, no, not really. All I have to say, is "Hmmph!!" Here's what i meant to say. Gender roles. Her songs stay(for the most part) with in gender roles. Especially on Jupiter, she's saying "be still my little heart". I ,for one, would never say that. She's so good at being the weak, sweet girl in her songs...But..gender roles keep everything simple. and jewel is simple in that. -saaaaaaaab ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 11:45:48 -0600 From: Louise Subject: Jewel's in Melbourne!!! And a lame interview on our boring radio station... Sender: owner-jewel@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey Angels, Well Jewel's finally in MELBOURNE!!!!! Yay for me!!! As you can tell I'm pretty damn excited. I came home from school today to listen to an interview on a local radio station here called TTFM...Man was it LAME!! I swear if I couldn't hear Jewel's voice I woulda turned it off it was sooo dull. They asked her stupid questions..."What was it like growing up in Alaksa...How many cars do u have now...she said she still has her '82 Volvo :)) But anyways it was sooo bad, the one and only highlight besides hearing Jewel speak was the BEST part of the interview when she performed an acoustic version of 'Do You' It was aweosme hearing one of my fave 'Spirit' songs without the band behind her. At the end she added "Hey you say you like the way the cowboys tip their hats and say hows it going ma'am" I liked that ending :) Anyways back to how bad it was, it went for less than 10 minutes and was IMO the worst interview she's ever had given to her. TTFM should be shot...lol j/k I was just kinda bummed I only got to hear Jewel for 10 minutes, I was expecting a LOT more...Oh well only one more sleep til I see my Jewel on stage!!!!! Can't wait!! Take care Angels, I'll be taping the 5 concerts I go to so if anyone wants Angelfood of these concerts I'd be more than happy to dub them :) Byee guys, Louise, "one of the kindest Angels" "In the end only kindness matters" - Jewel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 09:55:27 +1000 From: Laurie Boddy Subject: aussie eda's g'day again to all aussie eda's, are any of you who are going to see jewel in the upcoming tour taping her shows. please let me know, since i can't be there i would still love to hear her in oz. thanks again bodhi, angel down under ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 09:51:44 +1000 From: Laurie Boddy Subject: jewel in oz (ie Australia) to those in the know i'm an eda from brisbane, australia awaiting jewel's first concert tour here with great anticipation. originally i had planned to see as many of the concerts as i could, but you would not believe how much it costs to get around this great land of ours. so i'm restricted to the two brissie gigs. i was wondering if anyone could tell me how long jewel was going to be in brisbane for? i don't know if she has much spare time at all but it would be real cool to meet her. me and my girl are huge fans and are actually celebrating our relationship...now i don't expect the fact that i'm an eda to get me any privileges but i'm just hoping to see her around town like any other punter. another query...is it still ok to record her shows for the eda's. if yes, i will have two gigs from the sunshine state in about three weeks. i really don't know of the time involved in making copies for all you guys so i guess the best way is to get a handful of eda's from all around who are willing to distribute further. if anyone has pearl jam videos willing to trade, please let me know. please contact me personally if you want this angelfood or if you have any info on jewel's aussie tour. thanks heaps guys, take care Bodhi, angel down under ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Feb 1999 21:02:59 EST From: STAC5984@aol.com Subject: Re: SJC. Hi EDAs-- I've read through all these e-mails and I finally decided I feel almost obligated to have a say in this. I agree with someone who said something like "when I looked back on poems that I wrote in High School(?), and they were" ah, they said either embarassing, or juvenile, or something else. And how Jewel might feel the same way. I don't remember to well, my memory is extremely rusty. Well, I agreed with that person's post a great deal. Unlike many other Angels, I purchased Spirit previous to PoY, and I didn't exactly get into this whole having to transition all of a sudden to the "new Jewel". One day (about a month later) when I decided I wanted to trade in some gift certificates I had received for Christmas to this music store, and I purchased PoY, among many other albums by other artists. I'd have to admit, all songs aside from YWMFM, FG, WWSYS, Near You Always, and I'm Sensitive, I didn't exactly care for. See some-what of a pattern? I thought you would. Then, after I read through the lyrics along with the song, it just opened up a whole new appreciation for the other songs off of PoY. I know a great deal of you may not exactly care about this-- but I just thought maybe if you saw the tables turned you would see how, even if Spirit was released before PoY, transition is hard for one to get used to when they're used to hearing something very familiar, but then something new pops up and you don't exactly like it. I'm not saying you'll like the song better if you read through the lyrics some more, I wasn't suggesting anything of that sort. By now I'm sure you guys know what you like, and what you don't. Personally, I don't favor one album of Jewel's by another. Sometimes I'm in the mood to hear something light and airy like PoY (overall), and sometimes I'm in the mood to hear something more robust and thicker (and not to mention more focused on one thing, as far as the message Spirit gives you) like Spirit. Thanks for enduring my little opinions of mine-- I was going to not say anything, because 2¢'ing isn't too much of my thing, lately, but after reading some posts I just couldn't help my 13-year-old soul of mine. - --Jessica, the mischevious, tomboyish, in love angel that likes to "clumsly strum" her guitar :) ************************************************************ * Jessica ICQ: 3872338 * AOL/AIM: skizopyro * webpage: http://surf.to/dbjess ************************************************************ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Feb 1999 19:16:52 -0800 (PST) From: karl lannger Subject: the bottom line "the new jewel" the bottom line is that bothe poy and spirit are great albums in their own right. also, it is not a new jewel but a grown up jewel; let's not forget that poy was written when she was much younger "Music is your only friend until the End" Jim Morrison. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Feb 1999 22:56:47, -0500 From: HCCZ70D@prodigy.com ( SARAH MERRITT) Subject: re: Lyrics: I Don't Care (As Requested b I wondered if anyone had the chords or tablature for this song?
