I think that she felt kind of guilty for not putting that much effort in POY, most if not all of us love that CD and love the pure beauty of it,and its style, but Jewel in my opinion probly thinks of POY as a cheap CD of hers that she didn't even bother going to the studio into for some of the songs. So I think thats why she put so much effort and time into spirit, and she is trying (even though it might not be on purpose) to be the star we made her, hell one of us named a star after her. So I think that the changed Jewel a some of us refer to her as, but I think shes a more modivated, harder trying singer/songwritter/acter/poet that we all love. Well the truth is since Tammy posted this no more than 2 weeks you should all know but ok some of you missed her post. The story starts with Jewel stock, the concert Jewel put on for us EDA's. Many people that went stayed at a place called Steve's camp ground. A year after Jewelstock an EDA known to most of as Crunch, posted saying "hey it's been almost one year since Jewelstock why dont we all head to woodstock and have a reunion". Thus was born Bearsville '97. Every year in Mid july we all head up to Bearsvile (a town next to woodstock) for a weekend full of fun, friendship, and mind numbing violence as we chase each other around shooting toy laser guns at each other. Ok so now on to what's important know that I've said that: 1. Bearsville is in upstate NY 2. As far as I know there are no plans to ever have another Jewelstock (yeah I know Jewel said she wanted to do another one but I aint holding my breath.). 3. If you come up with any other questions dont ask me. I'm just setting up the car pooling and what I said above should give you enough info to know if you want to get involved in a car pool. John (I'm really a nice guy but if I answer all the e-mails I get asking me Jewelstock questions I'll never have time to figure out the car pools.) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Feb 1999 12:39:15 +0100 From: "Peter Iseger" Subject: SJC: Jude Cole Hey Angels, Does anybody have some information about Jude Cole, or does anybody know if there's a homepage or something about him. He's the guy that plays the guitar and sings A Life Uncommon with Jewel. His voice is awsome!!! And also (I know it has been asked before...) does anyone have the guitartabs from Jupiter? It's a beautiful song just to listen to, but it is actually great fun to play it yourself sometimes... What I need to say is I stopped and looked at my fandom of Jewel very closely and it was made only of a few things. For starters the only reason I was ever interested in Jewel was because of the fact that my best friend loved her and through the beginning of our relationship I got into her music heavily and I loved Pieces of You after a while. that brought me to this list where i joined and met other fans of Jewel. I also loved her lyrics and what she stood for at the time.. Her concerts were great.. not to many shouting youngsters at that time. But today.. i'm afraid to even buy a ticket if she tours for fear of a Spice Girl syndrome-esque concert environment. There aren't many "older" fans left because middle school kids in my town are like "Oh jewel spirit help the homeless" and what not. I was interested in her views that "if I can do it anyone can" but I doubt anyone can pull of her superhuman accomplishments.. or whatnot.. I feel now real iffy about my Jewel fandom.. I don't really like her new album much and as for Hands i really find no sense in the video or her lyrics.. sure, an artist changes, but i would expect some of what she says to be coherent. *shrug* but that's my opinion. i'll know how true my views are when i see what my hate mail says. the reason i posted this was to ask most of you how you feel about jewel's transitions over time.. sure we all have them i'm not saying i dislike her for it i'm just saying i don't terribly like her music that much now :/ take care everyone - -linda the lovable angel BenderGrrl@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Feb 1999 14:04:10 +0100 From: "michiel" Subject: Jewel concert tour starts with in 4 days :-) hello every day angels, It;s so odd to me , but Jewel's new tour is really coming close right now. Within 4 days the first concert will be given by Jewel in Palais Theatre in Melbourne , Australia. That must be as excited for all of Jewelfans , as for herself i expect. A new concert tour always is something unique, that is the chance for fans to listen to Jewel in a venue where she sings all her beautiful songs. I will be very interested to learn how the concerts will go, and what the experiences of Jewel and the crowd will be. I am always very looking forward to her European tour too. It's coming within everybody his spectrum .... Jewel will be singing i guess for packed crowds in Australia. The true fans will be more than happy to be in time at the venue to watch a glimp of Jewel and listen to her and the band that include Steve Poltz. I hope that there will come some good angelfood tapes from those concerts in Australia. I hope that this is still allowed as it was in the early days of Jewel's carreer. I can't imagine an artist that has been touring so much as Jewel did those days. It's sad for me that i haven't seen one single show at that particular stage of Jewel her carreer. I hope to catch up things this time, and i am so pleased that she will come to Europe in May :-) To all fans of Jewel :-) enjoy the concerts, and let it be a memory for allways :-) and spread all the news about those concerts on the list greetings, michiel jewelfan in holland http://members.xoom.com/Jewelimpala/index.html a dutch tribute page to jewel - a beautiful angel from alaska ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Feb 1999 00:41:58 +1000 (GMT+1000) From: marissa Subject: Re: my fandom of Jewel Hi angels My name is Marissa, I'm almost 17 and I joined this list yesterday. I gave POY to one of my friends for her birthday about a year or two ago, and I purchased the album myself a month ago, on a whim. Since I've listened to it, I have grown to enjoy it more and more. I always enjoyed YWMFM on the radio when I heard it and I went through the best relationship of my life last year and I found I could relate to a lot of the music including that song in particular on the album. The joy some of her music evokes is just beautiful. >I feel now real iffy about my Jewel fandom.. I loved "Hands" from the moment I heard it, but that's just me. I've only seen snippets of the video so I can't really comment on that, but I love the song because it's very relevant to what a lot of us are going through, many of my friends and I are going through our last year of school and there is so much tension and stress and worry in our lives at present it's kind of a relief to hear someone sing the words "we're all ok and not to worry cause worry is wasteful and useless" ect. I love her voice and her articulation in "Hands". >i'll know how true my views are when i see what my hate mail says. the reason >i posted this was to ask most of you how you feel about jewel's transitions >over time.. sure we all have them i'm not saying i dislike her for it i'm just >saying i don't terribly like her music that much now :/ This is in *no* way hate mail, let me assure you linda. I think many of us will agree we go through different musical phases and likes/dislikes. While I guess I haven't listened to Jewel for very long to notice much of a transition I have definitely noticed the way her voice has matured with the arrival of "Spirit", she seems more focused, more dedicated, more in control. I think I came in on the middle of the conversation, but all he asked about was her impression of Kermit the Frog. She sang the line, "You Were Meant For Me" in her "Kermit" coice, and then Rick Dee said that "If the singing doesn't work out for you, you can always go get a job at sesame street." It was kind of ironic that he said "If the singing carrer doesnt work." I thought it's worked out for her pretty nicely. She promised to come back when Ride with the Devil is released, and that was it... EDA's Well, I dunno, but my two cents: It is jewel's CD, So she can do what she wants... If she wants her mom to back her, then that is her choice.. as for Nedra doing lead vocals, I like that.. Jewel has mentioned that Nedra used to sing that song when jewel was young.. so it is kinda a respect thing.. Kinda like during VH1's Hard Rock Live She let Atz play guitar during Chime bells, like he used to when they preformed together in Alaska... So, like I said.. I dunno, but it is her choice... It is cool (in my eyes) that she respects her parents like that.... take care Rowdy "I am who I am... I think that Jewel's music is very ispirational, and there are a few certain artists which have that ability to reach out to people out as Jewel does. And people should hear more of that type of music-the kind thta inspires them. It doesn't matter where they are when they hear it. And even if her music is being heard with more of a sexual tone to it, then so be it. It is still being heard and having an effect on a person, whether it be in some orgasmic form, or inspirational, then that's great. Someone's still being affected, and I think that's what music should do. Even if it's not inspiring a person to do something, music still does something to a person. If it's as little as making them think a little different about an issue, or as major as going out and joining a hospice team, it does something, and that's great. love and lollipops Courtny (I am going by this instead of Courtney) the EvE 6 angel "The time is right, but I feel all wrong" Max Collins, EvE 6, "Jesus Nitelight" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Feb 1999 21:54:29 -0600 From: Rowdy A White Subject: Re: my fandom of Jewel EDA's I have the feeling Linda's post is going to spark quite a few replies... I just would like to say, that though you do not like the "new Jewel" (if there really is a "New Jewel") that is cool.. And if you dislike Hands/Spirit, fine... but you do not have to abandon her music.. Just think of all the Angelfood that is floating around right now... Surely there is enough to enjoy for quite awhile.. (I mean POY has held the first slot in my disc changer since 1996 or so.. =Þ )So between POY and available angelfood, I think a person could be content.. As for 'Hands'.. I live close to Dallas so I've been hearing Hands since the early parts of Oct... And I must admit... When started to play I liked it for the pure and simple reason that it was the first thing to released for airplay in a long time (plus like all EDA's I had been dying to hear something from "Spirit"..) but after about the third time I had listened to it, I knew that I really did not care for it... I like spirit (not quite as much as POY) but I like it... but now I tend to just skip track three and continue onward... As for Jewel changing.. Jewel is Jewel!!! " A wolf must die in it's own Skin" " I am who I am, who I was" It is all about the same thing... We all change, and we are have to live and die as who we are.. Jewel is looking for her own inner-peace and to achieve that, she has to be herself, not model herself as we dream of her to be. She is where she is because of us. We loved and love her and her music, but even if we did not, I bet she would still sing and write, work on her inner-peace, and maybe munch on carrots and peanut butter... She might still be living in her car, but she would be closer to inner-peace, than if she playacted to complete our fantasies of what we think she should be. As for Hate mail... no this is not it, just my two cents, and some advice... one of our newest companions, Marissa, had it right, i think she wrote > I've been on others for years >and sometimes flame wars tend to spring up. This seems like a warm >community from my first impressions. :-) Marissa said she was almost 17, so she is a young fan, though from the educated sound of her post, so I doubt she is like the "Young" fans described in Linda's post... So perhaps some of the younger fans are overeager, but I'm sure most of the EDA's are mature and collected about this... As a new EDA Marissa has missed the "changing Jewel" issue, but she brings the fresh view of someone who has listened to Spirit about as often as POY, so she has not had enough time to form prejudge for one or the other... I think this is a good thing... It pleases me that Her new album (which has been labeled overproduced, too commercial, mainstream- ETC....) is drawing people together not unlike POY and earlier work.. (Isn't that why we are Everyday Angels? Brought together by a artist and a music that touch us?) I hope that Marissa comes to like both albums equal, she will gain so much more from that, than maybe some of us that are afraid of change, and are hiding behind our POY CDs.... and I hope Linda continues to listen to Jewel, even if it is only POY and angelfood... I dunno.. just my longwinded $.02 Rowdy "I am who I am... Who I was..."RW ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #81 **************************
