The reward after the speeches was a private performance by Jewel. She stepped into the spotlight, slipped her guitar strap over her head, and then looked down at her hands. Sweetly, she asked if anyone in the house had nail clippers. 'My fingernails are too long to play,' she explained. Clippers were located and presented to her onstage, where Jewel pared each nail, the snips amplified over the sound system. Billy Baldwin turned to me and said, 'It's an Allure moment.' And then Jewel sang 'Who Will Save Your Soul.' Why did she stop at her nails? Maybe her ears needed cleaning. Maybe she could have flossed or shaved her underarms while she was at it. Here was this lovely creature with an absolutely bewitching voice. Her hair looked professionally styled, her makeup was impeccable. And then she broke the spell with a public manicure. Certain beauty rituals should only be conducted in private... Some women think its cute to be frazzled and unkept. They think beauty treatments are narcissistic. I know one woman who didn't get a job because, as the interviewer told her later, her nails were ragged and unvarnished. The interviewer decided this woman didn't respect herself or the job. Next. Beauty means being prepared. I'm in awe of women whose nail lacquer is never chipped, whose roots never bloom into a dark stripe, whose eyebrows are tidy, whose bodies are waxed and fragranced and glossed-and who have lives outside the salon. They look so serene, so polished, so complete." Pretty sad, I think. I'm in awe of a women who got herself out of living in a car, is happy, does what she loves, inspires millions of people and puts her extra time into helping those less fortunate... Even if she isn't perfect. In fact, I'm glad this Allure chick has a problem with Jewel's beauty routine, it just goes to show that Jewel really hasn't changed all that much. Subject: personal opinion Hi everyone. I haven't written in about a week, so I thought I would. The strip club topic, I realize it is getting old, but peoples interpretations are different for anything and everything. So my opinion is, it happened, so someone thought it was appropriate. I didn't get to see Jewel on Letterman (no cable), so I can't comment on that but I'm sure she did well regardless. I have a question, I'm fairly new, so excuse me but what is angel food, and how do you become an EDA? Please reply - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ IT HAPPENS!!! ~ KASS - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Feb 1999 11:24:00 -0600 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: The ever-changing Jewel Ok, so this is more or less another report about the Letterman performance...with a few things not mentioned in other posts. First my overall opinion...for the late 1998-1999 "Jewel"...not too bad. Did she get a perm? Other than the Hand's video, never have seen her with stringy hair like that, so that was different. I'd like to mention something about her attire, but I know that topic is not really discussed much anymore around here. But I'm sure most of you...guys anyway, know what I'm getting at. Let's just say she seemed to be *very* comfortable. I noticed she took the more earthy girl approach this time around, complete with bell bottoms. That works for her better than the "glam" look I think. I did like the color choice...kind of the PoY theme colors, or I guess EDA colors. Was that an EDA pick she was using? The color was right, but I never saw the emblem. That would have been cool though. She did look a little thinner to me, as another EDA already mentioned. It's nice to see I wasn't the only one thinking that. I think the longer hair has something to do with that though. I think I may have heard her guitar some this time around...but am still not sure. If she was playing, it was just basic chords. Does she play it this way on the Innerchange tapes? I can't remember. Just seemed to me it was a little more complex than that. But maybe she's leaving that part up to the other 2 guitar players backing her. Steve was Steve...not as bouncy as on Conan, but still quite hyper. Jewel didn't seem all that happy. Maybe she was tired, I don't know. Or maybe she was just getting in the mood of the song itself...Down So Long. As far as Letterman goes, I wasn't a bit surprised he didn't let her have ANY talk time. After she said he looked like a donkey the last time she was on his show. They didn't even show him walking over and congratulating her...it cut to the commercial. Maybe they were over their time limit. And she could have had other commitments too, so she couldn't go and chat any. But I think the time restraint is the main reason. Don't ever expect to see any interviews on Letterman for the musical guests. Or nothing more than 30 seconds. It just don't happen. Unless you're Cher. Or Elton John. Someone like that. Know what I would have liked to see though? This would go along with Jewel's earthy look I think...no shoes! She should have been barefoot. That would have been cool I think. I can't remember what shoes she did have on, but I doubt it was heels, not with that outfit. Maybe just tennis shoes. Barefoot would have been cool though. Never seen that on Letterman before. I agree with the EDA who said it seemed something was missing, but they couldn't quite figure out what. I don't know either, but I have my own assumptions. The sound was "thin" in general, Jewel's microphone had some weird effect on it...kind of a muted type sound I think. And Jewel seemed like she was getting into the theme of the song. I did like the beginning, she actually did the doo-wop thing, whatever it is. That surprised me. Too bad they're cutting that out of the single. That's the first time live, I think, that she's done that part. Not on SNL, not on Conan. The ending was um, different. She was out of her range I think. The CD ending is the way she should do it live. But at least she was getting into it some. As was the bass player. Was Steve a head banger in a past life? For some reason, it seems like he'd be good at that...ya know, being in a heavy metal band. Something like Metallica. So there's my opinion. Good song, nice look for Jewel, seemed like something was missing, no interview again. Derrick ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Feb 1999 12:46:05 -0800 From: "K.J. & A. MacPhee" Subject: Letterman Hi EDA's What did I think of Jewel last night? I loved it, but of course, my VCR had to breakdown ten minutes before the performance! I thought that, although I liked her Conan DSL, I preferred this one. Perfect voice(but what else do you expect from her?). She looked great...save one thing: the trousers. Please loose the trousers(No matter how fashionable they are, I will always despise bell bottoms). As for everyone being disappointed that Dave did not interview our lovely lady, he never interviews the music guests- unlike Leno where he slips in a few questions after the performance. And do you notice how in "Jupiter" Jewel mentions Jupiter, >Venus, and the moon? Well, I did. I thought it was kind of interesting. > Anyways, getting to the point, does anyone know what the song "Jupiter" >was meant to mean? Or what it's supposed to be about? Just curious... >Laura IMO, I think that "Jupiter" is just a love song. As to the space references, well, Venus is the Roman God of Love, "You make me so crazy, baby/Could swallow the moon" could translate into how she feels about this person, and as for Jupiter, well, that's the person's name. An interesting thing, while I was looking up "Venus De Milo", I came acroos another meaning for it: that name is also the name for the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle! Which would fit in well with the lyric "Venus de Milo in her half-baked shell"! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Feb 1999 12:22:05 -0800 (PST) From: AgentBB Subject: Letterman Commercials I was wondering if ne1 else noticed how before Jewel came on and sang they kept cutting back I counted 3 times, once where they showed the crowd and twice where they showed NY, before they actually came back for Jewel to sing. The magazine was called "Smile" for the next-gen girl April 1999. I believe she said it was some sort of Japanese Anime magazine. The article mentioned us, the Jewel mailing list. Its webpage is www.smilemag.com. Here's what it says: - -----------------------------------------------------------cut---------------- - ------------------------------------------- Everyday Angels In Jewel Kilcher's first release off of her new album "Spirit", she tells the world "that we're all ok." The EveryDay Angels Foundation, a non-profit charity organization, created by Jewel fans, are making sure that dream comes true. The organization formed by an Internet discussion group on the musician. Before Jewel became a household name, a core group of were regularly attending her performances. Jewel called these fans "everyday angels" in reference to a song from her first album. In early 1997, this group of fans decided to get Jewel a present for her upcoming birthday. She asked instead that they redirect their energies by helping people in need. They've been going strong ever since! to learn more about the organization visit their webpage at www.everydayangels.org or www.edaf.org. - -----------------------------------------------------------cut---------------- - ------------------------------------------- Well, there it is. There was another article, an album review, but I thought it was dumb and plus my hand hurt from copying the first article. I guess I'll post it if people ask me to. Thats about it have a great day!
