Then it finally hit me how unbelievably wonderful it would be to actually OWN the video on a VHS tape. So I was just wondering *innocent smile* if anyone HAD it and is willing to make me a copy for little ol' me. If so, please email me privately! I'd greatly appreciate it, and I'll be your slave for a week or two!(kidding! I knew you all were just up and ready to click those reply buttons, weren't you! oh, fine, ok! I'll be your slave! but I am not willing to do anything illegal! Jewel wouldn't want that, now, would she!?) Well, off to beddy bye, I go! She said he was named after one of the characters in the film "Henry and June", which is the story of the relationships between Anais Nin and Henry Miller and his wife June. Hugo was Anais Nin's husband. My daughter had sympathised with Hugo, and he was played by her favourite actor, Richard E. Grant. Because of this, and because of Jewel's reference to Anais Nin and Henry Miller in "Morning Song", I saw the movie and identified very strongly with Hugo, the caring, loving, faithful husband who is deceived and betrayed by his wife. I had read some of Henry Miller's novels a long time ago in Paris, when they were still banned in English-speaking countries, but I had never read anything by Anais Nin. I was intrigued, and a little puzzled, by Jewel's admiration for Anais Nin. So I have just finished reading the extracts from her diaries that were put together into a book called "Henry and June". I can see what Jewel admired: the person who pushed the boundaries beyond the conventional and accepted, the assertive woman, the artist/writer who poured her experiences into her art and for whom art was of central importance, and also the compulsive journal-writer who explored herself through writing. There were a couple of self-descriptions that I felt fit Jewel just as well as, if not better than, Anais Nin: "I will always be the virgin-prostitute, the perverse angel, the two-faced sinister and saintly woman"; Nin quoting Miller: "You're a sexual angel, but you're an angel just the same". I don't see an angel side to Anais Nin. But a real contrast between Jewel and Anais Nin came out in the following quote: "Again I wonder if he [Hugo] is only half alive or simply inarticulate. I ask him this and hurt him." In "His Pleasure Is My Pain" Jewel wrote: "I wonder if he's only half alive or if he's simply always been this inarticulate. Cause I say, at least I never meant to make him cry, at least I never meant to make him hurt that way." Jewel has taken Nin's words but turned the situation on its head. In Jewel's song the person speaking is the one who is hurt, who is sensitive. I think Jewel feels closer to the Hugos of this world than with the cruel, selfish and hurtful side of Anais Nin. As does my daughter. Take care, Barry Howarth ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 13:11:08 EST From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: Re: EDA Jewelry Question In a message dated 2/16/99 5:00:23 PM, you wrote: <> Hi all, Here I sit at a J-Team meeting in beautiful sunny San Diego & took a break to check mail. MrBB ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 10:17:38 PST From: "dancer girl" Subject: Jewel in strip clubs: a "stripper's" p.o.v. Hello EDAs, I finally decided to add my 2cents to the discussion about Jewel being played in a strip club. I've been a list member for some time (since shortly after JewelStock), and love her music. I also love the EDAs; those I have met thus far are wonderful people. About a month ago, I began working as an exotic dancer, stripper, whatever you want to call it, at a club. I won't get into the reasons why I chose this profession here, but am more than willing to privately respond to any queries as to why on earth I do it. I did decide to create a rather anonymous email account before posting, because I have several friends on this list, and I would prefer to tell them about my new job personally rather than them read about it in a post. I have yet to dance to any of Jewel's music, but that's due in part largely to the fact I keep forgetting my music at home. I do agree with the original sentiment that much of her music is of a spiritual tone, which is sort of the opposite of a strip bar. I don't know what songs were played at the strip club Melissa's boyfriend went to, but I know there are some songs that, due to the spiritual content, would seem very awkward for me to dance to at work. But not all of her songs are like that. Some are more upbeat and humorous and fun, and would not be bad to dance to. Strip clubs usually have a wide variety of dancers, all of whom have varied tastes and styles (unless you go to a theme bar, of course). My point is that there isn't any specific type of music that is better to dance to. I hear everything at work (most lately I heard "Angel" by Sara McLachlan, and the girl pulled it off very well; it was really gracefully and tastefully done). Women dance to everything from Korn to Tupac to Jimi Hendrix to Sugar Ray. I think that most people's impressions of strip clubs aren't the most accurate. My workplace is definitely *not* like the wild places portrayed in the media; it's pretty low-key compared to that. A lot of people come in to just relax with friends, and don't really pay much attention to the dancers. I meet all types of people. Anyway, I just wanted to state my mind about the whole thing, and I feel better now. Happiness to all, "Alexis" ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 19:47:01 -0000 From: "Kristin Segura" Subject: Jewel merchandise If you send Jewel a letter (the address is in her Pieces of You album) then you get a list of items that you can buy(I think they are the same as in her online store) and a picture of her with her autograph on it(it's photocopied) get your free gURLmAIL at http://www.gURLmAIL.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 15:45:04 EST From: BRONCOBAND@aol.com Subject: jewel and god I have been a fan of jewels for a while and I find her music quite inspiring, etc., etc. However, even though Jewel's music refers to "faith" and "god" and "angels," I never really thought of her music as...well...religious, but rather kind natured and spirited (for lack of a better explanation). Also, since I have not ever been really religious (for various reasons), it bothers me a little to hear that others see her in that sort of light. Don't get me wrong, I mean, I think is wonderful that people have their own way of seeing things and I would not otherwise be expressing what my view is, but it just makes me sorta sad...you know...because I connected with the music for different reasons (and I always feel left out when something great has come about that has everything to do with religion). Anyway, I guess what I am saying is I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on what he thinks Jewel's music is about. (not like song interpretations...different...i don't know how to explain it) Have a good day whether you want to or not! :o) Laura ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 16:59:23 PST From: "Kim Pitcl" Subject: Jewel's horse in Foolish Games Hi I was wondering if anyone knows what kind of horse jewel ride in foolish games? thanks for the help. Kim ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 19:54:42 -0500 From: "Willms, Gregory J." Subject: RE: jewel and god I think Jewel's music is, for the most part, about inspiration, love, faith, and kindness; not centering around a god or religion, but around one's self. If you work toward these qualities, they're going to rub off on other people, and that's what it's all about. It's about self-interest. That sounds bad if it's taken in the sense that "self-interest" is most often used, but if the interest lies in improving yourself, it's good. And the improvements in yourself will translate into words and actions that you spread to those around you. $.02 ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #75 **************************
