Isnt this information not correct? I seriously doubt Jewel wrote a song because she was inspired by Batman. Correct me if I'm wrong.< Hi Everybody, Hmm..."Foolish Games" inspired by Batman, nope :-) Back when Batman Forever came out, a load of EDAs who went and saw the comic book styled movie said "hey, FG isn't in there anywhere!" Those head haunchoos at Warner Bros. stuck the song in to give it some selling power. I *think* that FG was originally written back before POY was made. I remember Jewel saying once that it was to get back at a former boyfriend. Mark you've got this song on your Interpretations Page, eh? So, I'm planning to tape it and make the first Jewel on Spanish TV tape, that will include: - "El 7o de caballeria" (11/16/98 15 min.) Interview, Hands & YWMFM - "Sputnik" (1/27/99 5 min.) Report - "Lo + plus" (2/12/99 1 hour) Interview & Jupiter - "Los conciertos de radio 3" (scheduled on 2/18/99 30 min?) Concert If you want to get a copy, let me know and we'll make a trade. But I can only copy for about 10 people, so if you don't hear back from me, you weren't one of the lucky 10. Also note that I will tape it in PAL system, so if you use NTSC system (used in USA and some other countries) you will need to transfer it from PAL to NTSC. I can't do this for you. Take care, Dani ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 11:28:38 +0100 From: Harte Adrian Subject: JK French article translatiion Hi, As promised the translation of the Jewel article that appeared on Canal + website prior to her appearance on the said TV channel's NPA programme. Thanks to my friend and accomplished musician Mark Chaplin for his professional translation. The story of Jewel could begin with a showing of Chaplin's film The Gold Rush. The Klondike and Alaska were the last territories after the American West to be colonised. What's more, gold attracted a lot of people there. Jewel's grandfather didn't go there to find gold, but to take part in the drawing up of the map uniting this glacier-infested region inhabited by Eskimos to the other American states. He had even come from afar - from Switzerland, and was called Yule (as in Brynner). His son Atz Kilchner, who had returned from the Vietnam war, fell into the country-folk scene, touring the restaurants and singing with his own nugget of gold - Jewel - who was six years old. Jewel was nearly eight when things turned sour. Her parents divorced, and her mother cleared off for the West Coast. One can understand why, because Anchorage is a strange old dump of a place. There's one good thing about it, though - it has one of the most impressive hydroplane airports. Everyone has their own little plane (an authentic Beaver..!), and goes flying over the lakes and stretches of smooth water. That's not what is missing. Even the last owners of the little mines come by helicopter to pick up a few little nuggets to live quietly and comfortably in the town. But people still get a little bored there. To the point that the government gave bonuses and tax exemptions to volunteers who would willingly freeze their balls off to work in the Valdez petrol factory. Young Jewel was nearly 16 when she left for Michigan to study at the Interlochen Arts Academy, where she learned singing, sculpture and drawing. Surrounded by men, her father and two brothers - not to mention the course fur traders with beards and checked shirts - it was time to split. Later on, she joined her mother in California, where she discovered surf, sun and tanned people. She bummed around all over the place, singing her folk repertoire, and took menial jobs which she didn't hold down for long. This was her darkest period, without a roof or any law to govern her, and with health problems to boot. She had no insurance, so the hospital wouldn't take her. However, she managed to avoid serious kidney trouble thanks to a friend, John Katchur, who taught her guitar and paid her hospital fees. After this misadventure, she left her small apartment and lived in a van, a camping car (like her mother), and began travelling the length and breadth of the region, singing in coffee houses. Through meeting local musicians, she won her first contract with the Innercharge Cafe. Atlantic Records subsequently noticed her and signed her up for her first album, Pieces of You. A very natural piece of work - - a snapshot of her then 19 years - the album is not a major piece of gold bursting into a million flights of genius, but has still sold 10 million copies. It was therefore time to reflect and get to work immediately on a second album. The result is Spirit, which is clearly a work more connected - surprise, surprise - with spiritual matters and faith. It makes one think of alter egos like Sheryl Crow with its folk-pop-rock leanings, and especially Alanis Morissette or Lauryn Hill (???? - never heard this comparison before - A), who themselves tend towards mystical folk-singer status. Where can I get a copy if not from the catalog. In case anyone else was wondering the same thing, the Jewel management team decided not to produce an official 1999 Jewel calender. I'm nott sure as to why, although I DO know they had tons of 1998 ones left over mid last year....it could be related to that to some degree. Mike :-) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 12:06:24 -0500 From: "Willms, Gregory J." Subject: SJC:Jewel at a Strip Club, Big Deal I don't understand the problem with Jewel's music being played in a strip club. What ever happened to the open-minded "everyone gets something different out of Jewel's music"? You can't say that you want Jewel's music, message, and love to be spread to everyone... except those people. Are those people not good enough to listen to it? Do they not deserve to hear it? Jewel's voice does have a sensual side to it, and if I were in a strip club, I think I'd rather hear her voice than Axl Rose's or someone like that. And did you ever think of this? Maybe one of those people in that bar will listen to her lyrics and he'll reconsider a thing or two about himself. Not bloody likely, but maybe. Come on people, think for yourselves a little bit. Instead of just hearing something from someone like "Ooh, that's bad", form your own opinion and come to it on your own terms. Don't be afraid to think radically or challenge popular thought. You'd be surprised how many standards and beliefs are really stupid when you take the time to actually examine them on your own. Our individuality is all we have to keep ourselves from becoming a world of drones. Hey EDAS, I'm 15 and have been a Jewel fan since she first came out. Mostly, I've listened to her in my room, but recently Jewel music has been popping up on every church trip I go on. I go to many youth conferences down here in NW Florida, where I live. First, I helped out at a Junior High Catholic Youth Fiesta, and their whole day had a central theme based on "Hands" and "Hands" was also their theme song that they played many times. Their main activity was giving a hand cut-out to each of the kids and having them draw/write what was important in their lives on the hand. Then, all the hands were placed to form a circle/community. Then they played "Hands" and it was so awesome! That occured in January, and just this past weekend on a Diocesan Catholic Youth Conference in NW Florida, Jewel struck again...twice. First of all, in one of the workshops I attended, the speaker said that, as a prime example, Jewel was a wonderful singer that portrayed positive values and standards. I was so happy! Then, each person at the Conference received a tape called "The 1998 Psalm 151" which is the 21 best songs of 1998 according to the values promoted in the songs. This list is compiled by a well-known Christian DJ/Music person Anna Scally. Well, I popped the tape into my player and was listening when I heard this: "....so what gifts has God given you? Do you have a good sense of humor? a lot of patience? the ability to solve problems? or are you a great listener? You may be cheerful, generous, spontaneous, thoughtful, or caring, and of course we all can love and be loved. The message of our next song is simple: You have unique gifts. Use them to improve the lives of others, then you love like God does. Think what a wonderful world this would be if we all followed this advice. With a great prayer song from 1998, here's Jewel at Number 3, with "Hands". Then the song started playing! I was so ecstatic to see Jewel have done so well and to have had a positive impact on so many people's lives, since it was hundreds of people that voted for this list. I hope to hear Jewel anywhere else I go and if I do, I'll pass it along. If anybody wants the address/phone number to Cornerstone Media, Inc. (the company who published the tape) then e- mail me individually. Stay strong everyone.
