Jewel headlined the showcase of talented women musicians that spanned 40 years. Odetta started the show off with a gorgeous voice and a heart full of the blues. Janis Ian rocked the entire theater with nothing but an acoustic and a whole lot of attitude. Phoebe Snow (acompanied by everyone in the audience) tore through "Take a little piece of my heart" with enough power to make Janis proud. Mandy Barnett, Judy Collins and Paula Cole all had strong performances. And Jewel, sweet Jewel stole the show. The only downer was she only played 3 songs off of Spirit: 1) deep water (which i still liked a lot better when it was faster) 2) Hands 3) Down so long. Jewel spent most of her performance holding a microphone. She played guitar on only 3 songs, using Big Blue to close out the show while she yodeled. The concert helped raise over $200,000 for Zero Population Growth, with none of the women taking a dime in payment. Too bad for those of you who missed it. Maybe next time. take it easy, gang ~peter the unknown angel~ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Jan 1999 13:12:02 -0500 (EST) From: Jennie Anderson Subject: Jewel's Wizard of Oz--last call! is there anyone else who wanted me to order them a copy of Jewel's Wizard of Oz video? i need to know by this thursday because i'm ordering them on friday. for those of you who have already emailed me about it, i'll send you the price as soon as i find out! thanks! jen ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Jan 1999 14:07:14 EST From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: MrBB- Setist-MSG,NYC 1/25/99 Hi all, Here's Jewel's accurate setlist for the Women In Music Concert in NYC last night. Subject: A late review Since my cable sucks, I just now saw the Conan show with Jewel. My rating: B Only that *good*, cause it wasn't Hands again. Not what I expected after reading so many great posts...or so I thought. Sean (Hooks), are you well? Maybe you're just submitting yourself to the overwhelmingly popular vote for Jewel's going commercial now. Anyway, the make-up was still way too much. Yes, not as much as some other shows, but still way more than what I had visioned after reading the posts about it. The song was ok, that's all. Not like it was on SNL. SNL's version was much more solid. More fun I guess. Was Jewel tired on Conan? Couldn't have been from playing the song too much. Steve's bouncing almost hypnotized me...but I know that's characteristic of him....so don't send any flames about Steve. He's ok. Just bounces alot. What's up with that band? I know Alan said that was going to be her touring band, but what? Why the change? I mean, she had the same band for what, 10 or more TV performances? They even played Down So Long on SNL, so it's not they just couldn't play anything other than Hands, although I was beginning to wonder that. I don't know, just something about that band on Conan that didn't seem it "fit" Jewel. With the exception of Steve. I could see the band backing Lenny Kravitz maybe. So, while it was nice to hear another song besides Hands, I just didn't get what all the hype was about that performance, as it was nothing at all like her early appearances on Conan. Except that Conan was there, and Jewel was there. At the same time. That's it. No interview? Why? Aren't they friends? Something else I will never understand. What's 2 minutes of talking going to hurt? Yeah, I imagine not Conan's fault, but still. Someone should have given her some time to talk. So there's my summary. Someone on this list besides me HAD to feel somewhat the same. Out of the 1000's on here. But I only saw like 5 really positive posts. Seemed lopsided to me. What about the negative ones? Negativity can be healthy too. The world isn't perfect. Jewel isn't. We all know that. I just think she could do alot better. Not succumb so much to the media as she's been, even on Conan. Did (could) anyone HEAR her guitar? Same thing as on SNL. Is she playing the guitar on this song now? That's twice I didn't hear it. Maybe it's just turned down *really* low. But then why have it? Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait till I see her live...hopefully something a little more genuine than her recent TV promotions. Maybe this isn't all Jewel's fault, but it's hard to think otherwise. She has enough power to do certain things at least with her life and career. Derrick ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Jan 1999 14:25:32 -0800 From: "George W. I hear Jewel was raised Mormon for a while. So imagine my fright when I (finally) got to read the Rolling Stone article with "the pamphlet". Let me once again state- I AM MORMON. What was said was entirely false. (She said people should stay apart in bed and a husband could only "spoon his wife" for "twenty minutes.") Maybe this was the reorganized version of the church that broke away so they could pratice polygamy, which, by the way, we do NOT practice. But it angers me that people associate these kinds of things with us and that these people insist on being called Mormon when they just aren't. If anyone knows what that was supposed to mean, please, let me know your thoughts. I thought that i would just welcome myself... and, even though some of the old readers seem to find it amusing, i want to talk/type about how Jewel's work affected my life. almost two years ago, i had my heart broken. i would go into details, but although they are important to me, i doubt they would be to those who will read this- "...hearts are broken every day..." (aren't i clever). anyways, listening to Pieces of You made the hurt a little sweeter and helped me realize that i was neither the first to be hurt nor the one who hurt the most. her lyrics expressed my hurt really well, if that makes sense. anyways, that's my "fan talk." if someone wants to talk about Jewel or even just talk, they can e-mail me at seawins@worldnet.att.net and/or get my icq # the littlest angel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Jan 1999 22:41:11 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: Hear Jewel sing "All By Myself" on network TV Sunday night For those of you that do not know, Jewel sang a cover of Eric Carmen's 1976 smash hit "All By Myself" in the movie Clueless, starring Alicia Silverstone. (This was way BEFORE Celine Dion released a version of the song). Well, Clueless is going to be on NBC TV this Sunday night January 31st at 7:00pm EST, just about the same time the Broncos will have a 17-0 lead over the Falcons. I forgot how far into the movie the part where Jewel sings occurs, but I know it is in the latter half, and it is during the part where the Alicia Silverstone character (named Cher) is depressed about unrequited love and is walking in downtown Beverly Hills lamenting. You hear Jewel singing ("all by myself. Don't wanna be....") in the background until Cher (whose #1 obsession is clothes) sees an outfit/dress she likes in a window and perks up immediately and wonders "I wonder if they have that in my size?". Useless Personal Trivia Alert!! For me, when I saw Clueless in the theatre I had never heard of Jewel at that time (the summer of 1995), which was about 6 months after Pieces Of You was released. I noticed the song right off, and wondered "WHO is that?!!?" singing. I was quite impressed right there, at the first moment I ever heard her sing. I cannot recall if I went looking for music by her then, and I guess I forgot about her because the next time I was exposed to her was at the premiere airing of "The Wizard Of Oz - Dreams Come True" on Thanksgiving night a few months later. I was totally intrigued by her in that production, but did not realize it was the same girl who sang in Clueless. Thinking Jewel was just a Broadway actress doing that show, I did not look for music by her then either. It was not until the following March that I saw Who Will Save Your Soul on MTV and that I then found Pieces Of You that night. Still, it wasn't until the summer of 1996 that I realized it was Jewel who sang in Clueless. By the way, before anyone starts asking on the list, NO ONE has a copy of it, as it was not on the soundtrack CD, and she has not performed it live (to my knowledge). As far as I know, it's not even in the official Jewel archives. So, the best you can do is tape it (it's *not* the whole song in the movie) and if you have the right equipment, you can clean it up and remove/filter out the extraneous movie sounds.
