Gonzalez" Subject: Women in Music/NYC venue change Anyone who has tickets MUST go the the Madison Square Garden box office to exchange their seats for the numbered seats at The Theater. Seating in sections loosely corresponds to the comparable price locations at the original MSG site ($100 seats are in the 100 section in the front, and so on). I received a post card stating that the venue was moved to "better accomodate the acoustic nature of the concert." Call me a cynic, but with the radio advertisements and accelerated radio giveaways (I think it was Z100 - 100.3 FM I was listening to) I think they undersold the concert and are attempting to save face. Anyway, it should be fun, nonetheless, and I'll be there, so I hope it's a good concert. No, this is a repeat of a previous broadcast. Most likely her recent November 19th, 1997 appearance where she performed "Hands". 2) When is the HGH Launch Concert? This took place yesterday in Aspen, Colorado. It was filmed by VH1 for broadcast in March. Exact details will be on the website calendar soon. You'll also be able to learn more about HGH on the website over the next few weeks. We're in the process of adding an HGH informational video as well as other HGH-related content. 3) When is the upcoming UK TV & Radio Promo Tour? Jewel will be in The UK taping various TV & radio programs on Febuary 2, 3 & 4. We often don't know which programs she'll be doing until they arrive in the UK, so I'll need the UK EDAs to do some research & post in regards to exact programs & airtimes. (Chris G, can you work on this & get in touch with me accordingly? I'll also do what I can to help with more details.) 4) What non-UK European TV promo are you aware of? At the moment, 2 things I can be informative about. They are: Feb 7th Sen Kväll Med Luuk(TV Show), Stockholm,Sweden Feb 11th TV Taping, Madrid, Spain (check local listings. Again, I'm not sure of exact information. Any EDAs from Spain can educate us more on this.) 5) When will Jewel begin touring North America? The next major North American Tour will tentatively begin in early July. Theres still plenty of time & we'll get all the dates on the website calendar with time to spare. As always, EDAs that pay attention will be the first to know when dates are posted! 6) I have tickets for Monday night in NYC. What should I do? Any ticketholders for the ZPG Benefit at Madison Square Garden should call or visit the box office to exchange your ticket for a ticket in the smaller Theater, where this is now taking place. I do not know if new tickets are still available. Call the box office. I think thats everything of timely importance. A lot more information, including confirmed tour dates, other upcoming TV & other general information can be found on the website. I hope everyone is doing well, MrBB ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 10:36:04 -0500 (EST) From: Jennie Anderson Subject: Jewel's Wizard of Oz video for those of you who don't like to order things off of the internet...this book club thing i belong to also sells videos. i just got the new catalogue yesterday and on the back page they had about 4 different versions of various "wizard of oz" videos...including jewel's! i think it was about $12 or $13 plus shipping (i won't know what shipping costs until i get the bill--sorry!), but i'd be willing to order extra copies of it for anyone who wants it! just email me and let me know! jen jenniea@purdue.edu ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 17:39:25 -0000 From: "Nosh" Subject: A few quickies 1. The awards at hand are the 1999 Orville H. Gibson Guitar Awards, to be held Feb. 23 at the Hard Rock Cafe in Los Angeles. Up for Best Rock Guitarist (Male) are John Fogerty, Joe Satriani, and Jonny Lang, while battling it out for Best Rock Guitarist (Female) are Sheryl Crow, Courtney Love -- who is not best known for her guitar work -- and Jennifer Batton, who is best known for her axe work for Michael Jackson (and for her spikey blonde hair.) The Best Acoustic Guitar categories sport a few more appropriate nominees however, with three of alternative radio's favorite females -- Jewel, Sarah McLachlan, and Lisa Loeb -- up against each other, and Dave Matthews up against veteran James Taylor and alt. country rocker Steve Earle. This year's Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to former Stray Cat and current swing/big band leader Brian Setzer. The awards ceremony will benefit the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Foundation, which helps severely handicapped children through the use of music. I only really have one comment about it ant that's WOW!!!! She is great. I don't know about all you people bashing her newer version of the song and honestly, maybe if I heard the older version, I may like it better, but she was still brilliant. She looked beautiful, sure she was wearing a bit of make up, but who cares, the song was sung great and I really enjoyed it. I guess that you all can tell that I don't get to see her performing very often by now, eh!? Well I'll stop rambling on now but she was great and I can't wait to see her live in concert for the first time when she comes to the Ulster Hall in Belfast here on May 1. Well, everyone, have a nice evening and byeeee. WELCOME! Since I know few people actually read the FAQ (& its over 3 years old anyway), here's the best possible thing you can easily do to feel much more comfortable here & fit in right away! First, PLEASE go to your list owner Mike's "Jewel List Guide" at http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/ This entire website is dedicated to educating all new listmembers about the Jewel Mailing Lists. Most everything you'd like to know is right there & almost every common question is answered about what goes on here. Every day I get email asking the same questions answered here. I almost always send them to Mike's site. Most new subscribers write me back quite thankful for this advice! So please, if you are new, help everyone especially yourself by helping yourself to answers here. From the exit page on Jewel's official website, you can also find links to the above site & others I highly recommend to new folks. (We'll be adding more.) To get to the exit page click "exit" in the very lower right hand corner of the www.jeweljk.com 1st navigation page. (You may never have noticed this?) Besides the above you'll also find a link to Adam Longfellow's amazing "Pieces Of Jewel" website, which is without question, the most comprehensive Jewel website for everything including historical Jewel information & photos. This is also highly recommended for new folks & is the longest running site dedicated to Jewel. I know its confusing for new folks, but if you take advantage of the above mentioned resources & the official Jewel site, I promise you'll enjoy everything much faster & make cranky old list vets much happier! And we all want that, right? ;-) MrBB ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 22:29:49 EST From: FallinPixi@aol.com Subject: "Save the Music" and Cats Music Jewel review Hey I was watching VH1 and saw a Jewel commercial of her talking for "save the music" anyone know if she gets paid/or paid much for this? And if she's doing anything for save the music? on another note. . . i went by Cat's Music's (this kinda small CD store. . .kinda like Turtle) anyway. . .i went there and picked up one of their "free" magazines. . .the one for the cats stores and there's a small article about Jewel then she's shown again in a small advertisement for Sprit (in black and white) just wondering if anyone else has a cats near them? anyone that HAS everything (they can get) of Jewel and wants it. . .i think i can "steal" a few copies. . .but I'm not sure if it's worth it. . .I'll put the artical here this is the article the picture of Jewel in the little pink tanktop/thinstrap shirt (with the straps of the black shirt under) from US and People is beside the article. . .but it's in black and white. . .this is a really nice article saying how Sprit changed this guy's view of Jewel. . .and even he knows she's changing Jewel Spirit (Atlantic) by Robert Beverly Jewel's music has annoyed me for a few years now. Her "just little ol' folksinger me" pair of shuffle hits were bad enough, but her whiny vocals on the bloated "Foolish Games" pushed me over the edge. So imagine my dismay at finding her new single... good! Huh? Is this a fluke? Only one way to find out.... About that single, "Hands." There is no whining. No histrionics. No yodeling. It's an engaging song with a simple but interesting chord progression and great arrangement. The lyric is built on a universal truth ("Only kindness matters"), and her delivery gives her pretty vocals room to breathe, keeping the focus on the spiritual instead of the singer. Speaking of, Spirit is definitely well-named. Its songs are earnest in their concern for our collective spirit. The opening "Deep Water" is a quiet anthem, blending idealism ("It's nothing without love") with '90s conflicts ("And you wake up to realize/Your standard of living somehow got stuck on survive"). Again, reining in the sound makes the message a lot more palatable. After such lofty ideas, it's a bit of a shock to hear "He caught my eye/Stranger, step inside this place/And own me, own me" ("Enter From The East"), or equally vivid lines of longing on "Absence Of Fear." But ultimately, such yearnings remind us that she's a woman, after all, not a priest. Codependent implications aside (e.g., two requests to be "fastened to your side"), her imagery is a lot better than what many of her male rock counterparts might choose. Only two missteps jump out--the misspoken "Innocence Maintained" and "Fat Boy." Maintaining innocence isn't the point; maintaining love, respect, and hope in the face of life's inevitable tragedies is. Likewise, the preachy "Fat Boy" has good intentions but remains a caricature. Those two songs, however, turn out to be almost three years old, compared with the set's mostly newer material. Is Jewel growing up? Making strides where it used to shuffle along, the mature sound of Spirit forces even me to admit that her music certainly is. *Cara* The Angel who's been running into Jewel with out even knowing she's there (example: watching TV and her coming on. . .and picking up magazines. . .getting home and noticing Jewel's in them! we all have those times!) I know this is really long. . .thanks for your time! all you are going to come visit me if i move out to Las Vegas. . .right? *giggles* ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 23:44:21 EST From: TFace151@aol.com Subject: Jewel and her new management Hey EDA's I went to ticket.com today and I found a news article about Jewel and her mother and her managment. I just thought yunz might like to read it. Here it is: New Management For Jewel Jewel has a new manager. Nedra Carroll, mother of Jewel, tells Billboard Bulletin that she has stepped back from managing the day-to-day operations of the singer/songwriter in order to focus on "the longer-term development of her career," including her published writings and acting projects. Carroll says she will continue to be the primary liaison with Jewel's label, Atlantic Records. A new manager, Julie Agrati, was brought in Jan. 1. The news comes amid the pending $10 million breach-of-contract lawsuit filed by Jewel's previous manager, Inga Vainshtein, against the singer and Carroll. Carroll declined to comment on the suit. Jewel's first book of poetry, "A Night Without Armor," has been a best-seller for HarperCollins, while her sophomore Atlantic album, "Spirit," is No. 10 on The Billboard 200. - -- Chuck Taylor, N.Y © 1998 Billboard and BPI Communications Inc.
