I know that barely a handful of people turned up for some Jewel's gigs in the UK on her last tour and I'm now thinking that this may happen again. If anyone went to the Shepard's Bush Empire gig last time around waht was the size of the crowd like? The Albert Hall has a capacity of a few thousand so if ticket sales are like what happened last time, the concert might have a bit of an empty feeling. Jewel also reckons that support here is limited as she once said sarcastically on an interview that she only sold a few hundred copies of POY here (at any rate very few people know who she is over here). Any thoughts from other fans in the UK would be appreciated. I personally like the way she sings it and I reckon it'd be cool if she released a country album. If it's what she wants to do then I say go ahead Jewel. I'd be buying the cd. Just a little thought. I myself, am quite new to Jewel, I just got to know her about a year ago now, but I must say that I agree with the 'veterans' that say her older songs are mostly better, that doesn't mean that her newer songs are crap, and I ain't saying the it's her fault, no it ain't. I think that the masses are pushing her to much, to make a new album very quickly, and at the same time appealing to a broader public. That's the problem I think, and by expanding her audience I think that'll only become worse, I'm not saying I don't like Jewel to have a big audience, but I think it's going too fast. I'll honestly say that I myself am quite a fan of the spice girls, YES the spice girls, their first album was really great, but they got so pressured by the instantly enormous succes that their second album failed to do so great. I think that's why one of the girls left. Just my thoughts, If anyone wants to flame, attack, agree, put down, praise or add anything to my thoughs, just go right ahead. Well, well, now I know why Jewel's tours over here aren't sponsored by the "Volkswagen Sound Foundation"... Also, I was just wondering if there are any EDAs who are going to Sheryl Crow concerts in Germany. She will perform some concerts in Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart and Dortmund in february. Been down so long Hey Angels, (Look, I even still call it "been" down so long) I just wanted to add along with this Been Down So Long topic, that there are even a few more lines that were left out of the Spirit version that I feel are equally as strong as the others. Here you go: 'Cause if you're at the top or the bottom it all feels the same We live out of fear if we're too rich or we're too poor 'Cause all I can do is muster up Some spare change and a little bit of faith And take some dignity with me as I walk through this door ____________ I love how she sings that last line on the Innerchange tape. =) Ok, my posts for the day are up. =) Peace, Priscilla "Daddy she's a goddess, can we keep her tonight?" ~ JK & SP =) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 17:43:16 EST From: Prism14960@aol.com Subject: Re: "Old" Down So Long & Now Jewel vs Then Jewel Hello Sean and Angels, =) I just wanted to say that I totally agree with you when you speak about the strength of the Innerchange version of Down So Long. I will readily admit that is really *is* more emotional than the Spirit version. I absolutely love that version, and especially because of the lines she left out of it, they in my opinion, are the most emotive lines in that song. (I was a bit disappointed with that) However, I won't say that I agree with discouraging her "change." I also have to admit that the Spirit version totally ROCKS!!!!!!!! Anyways, my point is I got this idea the other day..... =) heheheh Remember at Rockfest when Jewel was singing YWMFM all at regular tempo and everything, then at the end she sung, " and I was meant fooo-ooo-oorr..... 2 3 4" and then she doubled the tempo and rocked it out? (Thus, the YWMFM rock-out version. :) Well, I think it'd be really neat if she did the opposite at a concert. During Down So Long since most people will know the fast version, she could start with that, then nicely mix in (like she did with YWMFM) the slow version. Just imagine the people who haven't heard that version. Imagine how blown away they'd be when they realize how much meaning and emotions are really in that song. =) Just a thought.... and great rambling. =) Peace, Priscilla. =) "They all have aspirations, high hopes, and dreams and really they're alone..... like me...." ~ JK ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 20:00:08 EST From: Nubbay@aol.com Subject: "The Winner Of The OFJ JEWEL Site Award Is...." Like "Absence of Fear", "Been Down So Long" was not a song that had impressed me all that much before. When I listened to the Innerchange version, the first thing that struck me was that is was so slow -- and some people criticised Jewel for slowing down songs on "Spirit"! It was slow, mournfully and depressingly slow. But that was how it was meant to be and that tempo suited the song perfectly: it's about depression and there is only the slightest glimmer of hope of coming out of it ("I've been down for so long that the end must be drawing near"). The verse that is left out of the "Spirit" version adds to the hopelessness of the song: we're all alike (trapped by our nature?) and alone, "a faceless body lost in this vast and worthless sea". This song has no place on a record like "Spirit". But Jewel took up that glimmer of hope and magnified it. That turned the song into a celebration of optimism, and so the musical style had to be completely changed. It really is a different song and not to have cut out the last verse (while it does leave "And like cattle we all stand" hanging somewhat) would have blunted the positive slant Jewel wanted to put on the song and the whole album. "Down So Long", and "Absence of Fear", are musically much better on "Spirit"; that is, they're more to my taste. I've been listening to a lot of earlier Jewel songs lately: there are so many wonderful, clever, perceptive and powerful songs there, much more so than on "Spirit". But when I listened to "Spirit" again afterwards, I thought, what a beautiful album, in its own special way. There are so many facets to Jewel and "Spirit" is just one of them, just as singing itself is just one of them. Take care, Barry Howarth ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 20:02:19 -0600 From: Laura P Subject: Re: radio requests *This is not a flame, just a response* I agree that SOME of her old songs are better, but that doesn't mean the new ones aren't good. I don't know. I like some of her new songs better than some of her old ones, and vice versa. I think it's okay to like Spirit and POY at the same time; I know I do. Here's what I'm saying: Just because Jewel has changed doesn't mean we shouldn't give others an opportunity to get into her music. I'm not saying everyone has to agree, but that's how I feel. It's interesting to see her changing, and experimenting with new things.
