(For those of you who don't know it it's about her writting a letter to her boyfriend breaking up with him and explaining that they never really loved eachother, just thought they did.) But tonight I picked it up and played it. I just sort of switched through all the songs and came up to number 9. I listened to it and it made me think of all of you! It made me so proud to be an Everyday Angel. I don't know much about Jewel and her personal life, but her music inspires me to be something different. Her songs push me to explore things about myself that I've never seen before. I lost the POY book that came with the CD so I think the song is called "Everyday Angels"... It renewed my belief in what she is trying to accomplish through everything she does. No matter what she wears or if she doesn't play her guitar. She is trying to make this world a little better off. Let's all come together and join her. "We are Everyday Angels. Be careful with me cause I'd like to stay that way." Just missed the Jewel cover!), and Jewel is mentioned twice.. Both basically put her down, but I'll share them anyway.. The first has an awesome cartoon of her holding a skull and wearing Shakespearean clothes.. It's titled 'Should Pop Go Hollywood?' Here's the article: One's playing a Confederate widow. Another, a long-lost girlfriend. The third...God. Chortle all you want. But whatever you think of the multiplatinum-selling Mariah Carey, Jewel, and Alanis Morissette, their decision to trade in the microphone for the multiplex could reshape the musical landscape. Studios are suckers for the sort of stunt casting that will find Jewel costarring in Ang Lee's Civil War drama, Ride With The Devil (due this fall), Carey in the Chris O' Donnell romantic comedy The Bachelor (October), and Morissette in Kevin Smith's Dogma (later this year). There's nothing like a pop superstar to give a project a built-in curiosity factor (who ISN'T dying to know wheter Jewel's a better actress than she is a poet?). According to casting director Billy Hopkins, who hired Madonna for Desperately Seeking Susan, the studios don't have as much at stake as the artists themselves. "It's a huge commitment and a big risk for [them]," says Hopkins. "But if it works, it REALLY works." Sometimes, though, this kind of casting can work too well. After a stunning performance in 1996's The People Vs. Larry Flynt, Courtney Love's new CD didn't exactly break a leg. "There is a definite risk of appearing too Hollywood," says Waner Bros. Record spokesman Bob Merlis, "but really, as long as the quality of the music is there, it's fine. Look at artists like Cher and Madonna--their recording careers stand quite apart from their movie careers." -Daniel Fierman In the 'Hot Dates' special, there is a picture of Jewel with her poetry book. It says: 08.18 NATIONAL BAD POETRY DAY (Read Jewel) Ouch! We get the point.. You don't like ANWA.. No need to remind us in every issue.. Geezus.. After playing a few licks at the Creative Coalition Spotlight Awards in New York, the singer stopped mid-song to ask if anyone had a nail clipper. After procuring one from a fan, she proceeded to entertain guests with an impromptu onstage manicure. Don't worry.. They were all wacky.. The radio stations wouldn't give her any airplay, she sold little more than 1 million albums in 18 months, and her fan base was mostly San Diego and the surrounding area, nearly 3500 miles from Washington. The only reasons I can think of was she was a beautiful, blond, 22 year old with lots of talent. Being realistic I really don't think he'd care about the latter. Jewel has two pics in the February issue of "Glamour." They're on page 138. The bigger one is her wearing a black dress and sitting near a window. The second one is just a full-face shot. The article is called "Divas '99: Their Music Messages" and also looks at Courtney Love, Lauryn Hill, Sheryl Crow, and Alanis Morissette. Jewel's "Message Behind the Music" (in her own words) is: "I wanted the record to be very specific about how I've tried to stay alive--emotionally, physically, spiritually--over the last four years [since fame hit]," says Jewel, who is big on living centered and sane. the song "hands" concludes: "In the end, only kindness matters." Her "Righteousness Rating" is: "She's gone from being a yodeling Alaskan nomad to a Hollywood starlet, but Jewel still believes you should be the best person you can be. Who could argue?" ~jennie ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Jan 1999 21:23:34 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: re: jewel and the presidential impeach....er inauguration Eliot queried: > As I was walking to 7-11 today I remembered reading that Jewel had been >invited to play at the president's inaugration in 1996.Maybe I've been >influenced by the impeachment trials but it made me wonder Why did the >president invite Jewel to play at his inaguration? >The radio stations wouldn't give her any airplay, she sold little more >than 1 million albums in 18 months, and her fan base was mostly San Diego >and the surrounding area, nearly 3500 miles from Washington. Actually, it was the January 1997 inauguration (election in '96, inauguration in '97) and Jewel had already had two Top Five songs....Who Will Save Your Soul went to #2 the previous summer, and You Were Meant For Me was #9 at the time of the inauguration (up from #19 the week before and well on it's way to #1 and being the "Number One Song of 1997" on many national charts, including Casey Kasems' American Top 40 and Rick Dee's charts). As to why Jewel was there (in addition to the fact she was already a rising star) I can't remember where it was published, but someone had posted some magazine/newspaper article that said Chelsea Clinton was a HUGE fan of Jewel's and had begged dear ol' dad to get Jewel there for the gala, tugging & pulling on his arm as he called Jewel himself to ask her after she had turned down the organizational committee. (I think she had some tight scheduling or commitment at the time) Mike :-) P.S.
