If you read some of the recent articles she doesn't seem to have a HUGE problem being called a diva.....it's a compliment.... she's a mainstream artist and that's all there is to it. Sorry that this sounds so bitchy, but it's so frustrating to read a JEWEL FAN digest when half of the "angels" keep on criticizing her and her music....cmon guys....ONLY KINDNESS MATTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!(yeah...follow my example..). ;)hehehe - - Lindsey :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jan 1999 20:46:47 EST From: JewelAng@aol.com Subject: NJC: A few questions Hey EDA's Sorry I haven't written in a while I've been really busy. Thanks for reading this. Bye, The Fallen Angel, Lily "I love everthing about people. I don't know if this was mentioned when we were having our 'song similarity' discussion a while back, but I can't just ignore the similarities between Under the Water and Innocence Maintained.. I noticed htem when I listened to UtW for the 50 Millionth time a minute ago.. They both (basically) say: I want to live bravely and love without fear and Innocence isn't lost, it just needs to be maintained Although I get more out of UtW than IM.. Just my opinion.. Scott Evans/AOL IM: EDAScott Pretty Fly (For A White Angel) Under the water the total is more than the sum.. The article is pretty good, but the pictures are some of the best I've ever seen. Very powerful.I think it's worth the 3 bucks for the pics. Check it out. The article also said that "Spirit" has gone platnimum 3x, that's right 3 million copies sold. Mike or Alan, can you confirm this? Eliot ------------------------------ Date: 12 Jan 99 23:06:38 EST From: Nathaniel.H.Morgan@Dartmouth.EDU (Nathaniel H. Morgan) Subject: Diva Discussion In regards to the Diva issue, I'm glad Jewel is happy to be labeled as such, but what I don't really like about the media calling her a Diva is that one of the connotations that comes with the term is that someone else writes the music for her, or at least most of the music, and the Diva sings it. I'm not bashing those divas who fall into that description (Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, et al), I respect them for having incredible voices, but Jewel has an incredible voice IN ADDITION to her song writing skills, not to mention guitar playing (seriously, it's not THAT bad). That's why I feel labeling Jewel a "Diva" does her an injustice. She's much more than just that. - -Nathaniel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jan 1999 22:11:54 -0600 From: 1997 Subject: Spirit Review Well, I found another "Spirit" review and I just thought I'd share it with everyone. It's from Perimeter magazine, a free Winnipeg entertainment newspaper. ___________________ ___________________ In Defence of Niceness by Polly Washburn Jewel Spirit B+ On Pieces of You, Jewel sang, "Please be careful of me, because I'm sensitive." On Spirit, she's still sensititve, but she's stronger. She's healed herself and she's out to heal the world. Her message has moved beyond herself: "Be careful of each other," she pleads. Jewel now sounds like she wants to be a songwriter more than a pop star. While sometimes crossing over to pop, her music is folk for the late 90's. Jewel's also a kind of newage Amy Grant. Instead of Christianity, she preaches non-denominational universal love: "We are God's eyes, God's hands, God's mind." In the CD booklet, she proclaims, "We are loved beyond our ability to comprehend." Wile Alanis, Tori, Fiona et al. are are still bitter and biting, Jewel is preaching a new way. "In the end, kindness is all that matter," she croons, "It's nothing without love, love, love," she reminds us on the opening track, Deep Water. The first single off the album, "Hands," is the anthem for her movement. "If I could tell the world just one thing, it would be that we're all ok." The other love song, "What's Simple Is True," is perfect for Winnipeggers in love, "Turn to me with frozen lips, your hands are icy cold ... Old man winter be our friend." Several songs yearn for things just out of reach. "Enter from the East" is a sensual prayer. "Barcelona" pleads "Hold me, release me, show me the meaning of mercy, let my fly." "Absence of Fear," the album closer, speaks of the hunger of wanting and needing to feel safe. There are weak moments to the album. The music on "Kiss the Flame" is lyrical, but the lyrics themselves are out of her teenage notebook. "Fat Boy" is hard to listen to unless you're still a stumbling adolescent yourself. "Jupiter," "Life Uncommon" and "Do You" are forgettable, but pleasant enough. "Innocence can't be lost, it just needs to be maintained." If you're looking to maintain your faith in love and kindness, Jewel can help. For people already on her wavelength, Jewel is an angel, singing sweet words of truth. But for non-fans, her voice is not always strong enough to win converts. It's easy just to let the melodies flow right over you as background music. But if she grows as much as she seems to have between her last album and this one, her next album may include a voice that can save more souls." ____________________________________________________________________________ __________________ I hate to bash an article that overall says Spirit is good, but all the misquoting of lyrics doesn't instill me with the most faith in the writer.
