Here's the story as best I can recall it -- I heard Steve's version, not Jewel's.I think the story is on the One Left Shoe EPK. Anyway, Jewel was working as a waitress at some coffee house (Inner- change?), and Steve was scheduled to perform that night. She approached Steve, and told him that she, too, wrote songs. Now according to Steve, he got this sort of thing all the time, so he was a little skeptical. She wanted to know how to get a following like the Rugburns. Anyway, he told her to get a residency at some place, like a coffee house, for months, even a year. Steve concluded his story with this: "Now, I ask her for advice." There's more to it than that, I'm sure, but it's a start. First of all, I would like to address the opinion about Jewel's make-up and clothes. Girl's don't wear make-up because "their looks can't cut it naturally", I mean you used Mariah Carey as an example, well Mariah is beautifully...if you looked at her old pictures, she wore very little make-up if any and she definitely didn't wear the same clothes as she does now. In fact she has changed in a similar way as Jewel has in terms of her image and appearence. I also disagree about how the only reason why you need "layers" of production is because the person or persons can't sing as well. Almost every R&B group out there can sing acapella. That is in my books part of the definition of a good group or singer. But that isn't what is widely accepted in mainstream music. Now you'll say that it's bad that Jewel is going mainstream...actually she has already gone mainstream...but anyways, it is good that her music does go mainstream so that it can touch more people and change and inspire others also. And like I think I wrote before...it's not about the music, the clothes the make-up, the venues...it's about the lyrics, the messages within her songs. Everything else is just superficial...hating or disliking who Jewel "has become" because of the music, etc. is just like disliking a girl because she's ugly...which is in my opinion ludicrous. And is it possible that this is what she wants...she wants the clothes, the make-up, the band. Jewel seems like the type of woman who wouldn't do things because people told her to, but because she wants to. Maybe that coffeeshop girl image is what she wants to get away from. Anyways this has message is long enough... later, mel:) angel del cielo ______________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Jan 1999 22:28:50 -0800 (PST) From: karl lannger Subject: JewelAmp Dear extended Jewel family, I remember seeing a jewel Winamp skin somewhere. More smiles. Its not i wrote a new song, its heres a song from my new album. Remember listening to a slew of songs that would probably never be on an album? Remember guitar and chair, and Jewel packs a theater? Then the poetry book. an acessory, buy one today. And we did. Songs that lasted eight minutes turn into five minute philosiphes minus emotional stories. And you look for a culprit? Media? Fame? That damn Carson Daly? Nope. Us. Millions of adoring fans, that like Jewel because shes so alternative in her folkness. Some that love every song individually. Some that love her music by the album. No more gigs in close company. I don't write to this list much at all, however I am a fan of Jewel and like to keep up to date on the latest news and discussions about her. Jewel plays on more than two of her songs on Spirit doesn't she? She plays guitar which is the main feature of the album, the guitar accompanies all other instruments. I think Spirit is a more positive album than Pieces of You. I mean look at "You were meant for me, "Adrien" " and "Foolish Games" three quite depressing songs, but Hands is optimistic, she can see the light through this song I feel. Jewel isn't so innocent in this latest album, she explores vocal technique a little more. I am a classical singer so don't listen to modern music much, but it is nice to hear some music which isn't technically precise or perfect, but expresses more emotion than a lot of opera singers do. I'm not trying to say that Jewel isn't perfect, but it is a natural sound rather than a carefully placed tone quality. Now Jewel's natural gift for her style of music hasn't changed has it. I'm sure I'll get 100% agreement with that one! Jordie and guide dog Iljin! Who says, yeah whatever mum I don't care about technical precision like you do. mailto:iljin@crafti.com.au www.crafti.com.au/~iljin Net-Tamer V 1.11 - Test Drive ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 03 Jan 1999 22:54:59 PST From: "Marija Picard" Subject: he he he...JEWEL Changing??? hmmmmm... Boy oh Boy I haven't written in a long time and now a topic I feel compelled to right about..goodie!Ok...I findthis whole "has JEWEL changed" discussion very interesting, so I'm gonna put in my 2 cents, starting wiht a JEWEL quote: "There is this strange belief that we can't enjoy something once it's popular, This seems cowerdice to me. We should have the courage to exhault that which moves us." I am different today, than from when I was 3, I am different today than from when I was 15, I am different today than from when I was 6 months ago, And I garuntee it, that I will be different from today when I am 20, 30,40 ect. So my point we all change, we are all changing right now, people evolve,we learn and aquire knowledge which causes change and if we aren't then we are dead(figurativly and literaly)To live is to learn is to grow. Isn't that the whole point? If JEWELs music was always the same, or if it was only aucostic or by herself I would start to worry...I say that if we can't embrace something new without this stigma of "JEWEL gong Mainstream" then we're being just as stagnent and dishonest as the people we say JEWEL is selling out to(Radio, manistream MTV,MM,ect). So if we want to stay true to what we belive and enjoy then that means we have to accept change. "We are what we see, what we hear, what we experience."-Charles Manson Ok the guy's a nut but there is a large knott of truth in that quote, we live what we learn and experience. So the more we live the more we experience and the more that molds us into who we are today, at this very moment. So it is inevitable that as we grow with age and maturity we will change hopefully for the better. So I say in conclusion to my ramblings, I'm just gonna sit back, relax,do some evolving and growing of my own, and hope that like every other changing, growing person in this world, JEWEL finds her way through all this critisizem and comes out more knowledgeable and aware of who she is. Don't every let anyone else tell ,you, who you are! You're right about how she never answers people anymore in interviews. She definitely doesnt say fuck anymore. Did you mention how the ANWA version of As I Child I Walked sucks compared to the "complete" version that she did at Jewelstock, the stuff about hotel lobbies and neon and cold pizza, maybe she needs to reread or relisten to that version because I think she is being corrupted by some of the influences she vowed to get away from in that poem. And you have every right to be disappointed in her music, her art, since I assume that like me you don't really know her the person. If you think her art is suffering or has suffered, go on and express it. I also thought your point about the title Spirit vs. Fritz Creek Store is a great point, vague vs. specific, new age spiritual vs. old world homeliness. Good call. I'll wait to hear her do some live shows in the US(at ridiculously large venues with a mediocre back-up band I'm sure still doing YWMFM at every goddamn show) before being too negative though. Quite passionate posts lately from everyone, Sarah, Sean, Kim, and especially Luna and Mr. BB, who seem to be, er, at opposite ends of the spectrum, if you will, on the current schools of thought about Miss Kilcher. I didn't wanna get into it myself, but now I have to, you drag me into the fray! After having listened to Spirit for hmmm what is it- 2 months now or so, I'm still just kind of wishy washy on it. Pieces of You was such a masterpiece that I think almost anything she could have done would probably fall a little short of it. Fair to her? No, not really But my right to an opinion ? Yes. There are only two songs I've ever heard that can choke me up- (reminders of old boyfriend/ girlfriend songs not included- lol- I'm talking about just being SO, SO affected by the voice that it just melts you.) One one of these is "Hallellujah" by Jeff Buckley, and the other is "Amen" by Jewel. ("Angel Standing By" maybe a close number # 3, and no, I dont just like really mello songs, I have Metallica on the shelf right next to Billie Holliday: )). Spirit is a nice album, poppy, and positive, I have no big problems with it, and if "Hands" or something else affects you the way "Amen" does me , then I think that is great. However, for me, Spirit just doesn't quite grab the soul like POY. In "Angel Standing By" and especially "Amen" , towards the end, when she hits the upper reaches of her voice- my God- that is the sound of an angel, that is the sound of beautiful. Either way, POY or Spirit, she's really still just a kid, and hopefully there are about twenty albums yet to come- lol Anyways, it's 3:48 am and I'm tired so I'll have to wait a day or two to post a full comparison and get yer complaints ha ha Peace - Lone Wolf ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 Jan 1999 00:49:01 -0600 From: Louise Subject: In search of a really kind American... You might be confusing her with Julianna Hatfield who was.
