Hi, I was reading my Teen magazine and I got to a pic of Skeet Ulrich and decided to read the tiny article figuring there would be something about "Ride with the Devil" and there was. Here's what it says: "Both Neve Campbell and Wionna Ryder chose to date danger (Skeet) - and he may even entice Jewel on screen in the upcoming Absence of Fear." Well..... there ya have it. Absence of Fear. Did they do the wrong research or what? I have the guitar book for Spirit, and they have it where you tune your guitar down a half-step and it just looks intimidating (I've only been playing for a little over a year). Anyways, is there anybody who can play Hands with the capo at the first fret and help me out a bit? When I play it, it sounds great, but I think I'm missing some different chords in certain parts. I'd appreciate any help. Thank ya!! - -Nicole:) angel on horseback ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Jan 1999 06:48:44 EST From: LuverMb20@aol.com Subject: i cant think of a subject!!! Hey! I hope you're all enjoying the new year so far and that everyone had a blast on New Years. I finally saw the *commercial* on vh1 that i read about. I truly loved every part of it! But...what i loved most was Jewel and her guitar, just her, performing Hands. It sounded so much better, i thought. Much more pure, and i thought it was the Jewel i remember. I'm not saying i don't like all the new stuff she added onto Spirit, but i really appreciated that accoustic Hands. It makes me think that maybe Spirit was a little overproduced. Of course, if that was the direction jewel chose to go, then great for her. This is just my personal opinion. ;) Ami<<----babbles way too much!! Jewel ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Jan 1999 19:36:22 -0800 From: sp96@juno.com (Sarah Tong) Subject: Please Read: My reflections on Jewel Hello there, I have neglected to write this organization for a very long time. But now with Jewel's new look, her new persona, her new band, and her new record, I feel obligated, as a long-term EDA and fan of Jewel's music, to speak my mind. I fell in love with Jewel's music, the music which inspired me to learn the guitar, to write my own songs and poetry, many moons ago. I can't say that about any average musician. Jewel had a huge impact on my musical developments. She became the core of my inspirations. I thank her for that because not every musician that I've liked had that kind of inspirational power. Today, 1/2/99, I went to the store and purchased Spirit, after many long hesitations. When "Hands" played on the radio I doubted the fact that this artist was Jewel. The same Jewel that rocked out on her blue guitar during Lilith Fair, the same Jewel that made a living touring coffee house gigs. It surprised me. After the hit of "Foolish Games," it seemed like Jewel abandoned, in a way, her own preaching. Seemed like the endless songs about not letting the money, the fame, the glory engulf the true essence of you was being washed away minute by minute due to the popularity that suddenly struck Jewel. She abandoned her guitar playing on her Spirit cd. Only TWO songs out of 13 did she play and sing all by herself. Every other track was flooded with the excess booms of a bass or that of the electric guitar. I am NOT insulting those two particular instruments. I happen to love playing the bass and the guitar. But to ME, Jewel's music was so much better without the extra instruments. Her old songs were not adulterated and polluted by the instrumentality of the band. She sounds great with just her and her guitar. It saddened me to see this event deteriorate. In her recent interview in Rolling Stone, she said that she did not like "Pieces of You." She said that the record had a lot of mistakes. I can not hear any. I love that record till this day and will forever. "Spirit" is NOTHING!!!! compared to "Pieces of You." If I could ask Jewel just one question it would be: Why this album? Out of the 13 tracks I only like Fat Boy and Absence of Fear. The other songs were so dry and un-Jewel-istic. I do not, at all, like Spirit. But since it is Jewel, I bought it. The music industry is on a total wack trip. The music buyers, and long term fans have changed dramatically. They no longer purchase a certain cd just because it was by a certain band. For example, people no longer purchase a Smashing Pumpkins cd just because it's the Smashing Pumpkins. It's all about a particular hit song that they heard on the radio, or a song that their friends rave about. This conformity of music and style has turned the music industry upside down. And the all the pretty boy bands and "pop" music hits are polluting the real essence of this music world of ours. People, musicians, whomever, need to realize they should not write songs just for the catchy tunes and for that quick 15 minutes of fame, but rather for the pure joy of being able to construct a song on their own terms. I have said a lot. I appreciate you reading all of this. Feel free to criticize or to agree by emailing me a reply. Just remember this, all of the above are just my personal opinions. DO NOT take it personally and get offended. It is merely my reflections on Jewel, on the music industry and scene, and music itself. Not wrong exactly, though I differ on a few of your opinion. But one thing that I am so adamant about agreeing with you on is that she only played her guitar on two songs. What kind of bull is that?? I was as shocked as you were. Such a waste of talent, that's what I think. I do, however, like "Spirit". I think it's great that she's trying to write inspirational music and all that jazz. But man, two songs?? As a guitarist myself, I find it deeply disturbing. I noticed it when I first bought the album a month or so ago, and I was inclined to write about it to the EDA's, but I didn't. I'm backing you up there, that's for sure. She's my main writing inspiration too and I feel that she should have used her talent more also. I loved the raw, solo feeling of Pieces of you! I don't know how she can put down an album that so many people love!! I sure do. I will always be a devout Jewel fan, I can tell you that, but I have to agree with a lot of what you said. I still like Spirit though. But what a damper it puts on the album that she only played on TWO SONGS! I'm backing you up. Some say that Jewel has changed and her music has changed. But dont we all change? Dont we all grow up and mature? Dont we seek for new highs in life? As many know, Jewel started out in small bars and coffee joints. And that's where POY came from. Actually, some of the songs on POY were done live from some of the historic sites where Jewel loved to strum her chords and sing to her heart's content. But that was the 1st album, that was what, 5 or 6 YEARS ago? And Spirit is today, it is what Jewel feels today, it's what she thinks today and it's what she lives today. She is a more happier soul then she was 5 years ago. She lived out of a van not knowing she'd be able to that day. I know i would be happy to be able to have a house and be to support my family! Is really that Jewel is getting egotistical or is it that a bigger and brighter smile has graced her face and let her know that tomorrow will be a good day! We all deserve to live a good life, why not Jewel? Yeah Teen gets stuff mixed up but here's a nice paragraph on Jewel in Teen for Feb. 99 with a nice pic too. Now I shall type it all for you angels....hee hee: Jewel: Poetry Diva This singer/songwriter soared straight to the top of the charts with Spirit, the follow-up to her 10-million-selling debut. But even if she still couldn't sing, Jewel would still touch our souls. Her so-sensitive way with words shines in the best-sellling poetry book A Night Without Armor. This spring, the mulitfaced Jewel will display her acting abilites opposite Tobey Maguire and Skeet Ulrich in Absense of Fear (AKA to us EDAs who know the truth; it's Ride With The Devil). She sure has come a long way from living in a car and crooning in coffee shops--and serves up inspiration, proving that any girl's journal jottings can take her to the top. There. That's all typed out. This was a really nice artical. But Teen has to get there facts straight. smile always, carolyn airhead angel == "... I agree with the others, I wish she would have played guitar on more than two tracks on "Spirit" Though I do like the bass and all that, a wish she could have add a few more "traditional" songs.. That is just my view though.. she must play how she wants to be happy, and we all should understand that..... anyway, I have not heard anything on what her next single will be, but I hope it is "Down So Long" Of the songs on "spirit" it is one of my favorites, and it would be the closet thing to WWSYS that I've heard on the radio, in my eyes.. I dunno though, just thought I'd write these thoughts for ya'll.... Rowdy White "You want me to do what?! For those interested, I'd like to remind you about another great EDA resource website called "EDA ARTISTS". This site has links to many artists websites & tour date info for many San Diego artists including Joy Eden Harrison, Gregory Page, Steve Poltz, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Lisa Sanders, Mary Dolan, Andres Condon, Elizabeth Hummel, to name a few. Bookmark this site at: http://thespis.com/crashboy/EDArtists/EDArtists.htm Although sometimes out of date, you can always use this site to get to a specific artists' site & more updated info. I'm not up on Steve Poltz's performing plans for January but you can find that info at the above site. Steve will be the support act for Jewel on the Australia/New Zealand & UK dates that I put up on Jewel's website. For those specifically interested in Cindy Lee Berryhill &/or Joy Eden Harrison, heres a general update on them. Cindy Lee Berryhill will soon begin recording her next studio album & as many of you know, she has a very infectious stockpile of "keyboard written" pop songs. This next album will be the full blown "Garage Orchestra-like studio treatment" of those songs. I think the list of songs being considered include "Antarctica", "Family Tree", "Aquamarine", "Follow The Sun", "Victorville Beach", "This Way Up" (written with Steve Poltz), Eileen's Eyes (written with Stew of The Negro Problem), "Witness" & a few other possibilities I can't remember at the moment. Not sure about "She Won't Even Try" (aka The Skip Song), although I love that tune! Since that song is based on a Beach Boys tape-loop, I'm not sure its being considered. I know Cindy Lee played it for Beach Boys avatar Brian Wilson, who said "That blew my mind". Also, I think she'll be recording in several different studios. I think Peter Buck (of REM) & Brian Wilson have both offered their studios among a few others that want to work with her. No release date yet on that. There's also an independant release from CLB of a January 1998 LRT duo gig with Renatta Bratt coming out soon. I think in the next month or two. I don't have current details on that but will find out. This will be lots of fun but that next studio album is definately going to be another delicious leap forward for CLB. I'm looking forward to this album more than any other 1999 release! You can catch CLB gigging around San Diego & Los Angeles. Check her site for current dates. For more info on CLB (including a message board she partakes in), go to: http://www.mwpsoft.com/clb/index.htm Now, on to Joy: The first CD pressings of Joy Eden Harrison's new album just came in a few days ago. The album is called "Unspoken". This will be publicly released in February or March on her new label Astarte Records which is officially up & running now. Lucky attendees of last summers Living Room Tour already know how great this album is from the pre-release cassettes & her live performances. I highly recommend it. This album is a cathartic release of pain & loss, but still makes me feel soooo good & continues to improve with every listen. Luscious jazz & blues vocals blended with wonderfully unique pop-tinged production & arrangement help from Cindy Lee Berryhill. Joy should have her website together by the third week of January. They will have merchandising set up and ready to go. She's thinking about making the CD available to fans via the website before the official release date. Her CD release party is at Java Joes is on the 26th of February and then touring begins. I'll get the dates & post when they are confirmed. In the meantime, you can learn more about Joy at her old website at: http://www.ojo.com/kk/joy/ Hope thats helpful to those interested.
