Hi all, Some of what's below I posted a week or so ago, but I'll do it again for the benefit of those who missed it. But before that, I'd just like to say the post that was "accusing" Mike of various things & assuming other things was WAY OFF BASE! Mike & I have had our ups & downs too, but I can say without any doubt in my mind, that Mike has worked harder at keeping this community functioning than anyone else. He's contributed MUCH MORE to the history & logistics of keeping this forum open for all of you than anyone bashing him, thats for sure! I suggest those that are getting upset take a deep breath & relax! Moderating this list is one hell of a difficult job & although I sometimes disagree with Mike, I respect him & love the guy like a brother. Without him, this forum would have disintegrated into mindless ridiculousness long ago. Now onto other current things. It seems many of you place an aweful lot of importance on one meaningless radio interview & every little negative comment regarding Jewel. Is there really nothing better you can find to do with yourselves? This forum is WHAT YOU MAKE IT, & being thoughtful in your postings is what can make this forum great. That doesn't mean everything has to be positive or candy coated, but it does mean consider that you are communicating with REAL PEOPLE. All too often lately, I read posts from people who I doubt seriously would ever say what they're saying to a real person face to face. It's so easy to be selfrighteous in this type of forum when your protected behind your computer. I'm not suggesting every post has to be "positive" or suggesting you don't honestly state your opinion, but at least TRY to relate to each other as real people. That said, here again is my opinion on "jewel & EDA bashing": With more cynical (& often funny, I admit!) & more "flat out mean spirited" articles in the press being written about Jewel & The EDAs lately, something interesting has been happening to the types of emails I've been getting of late. I've recieved quite a few very sincere private emails from EDAs asking me how I feel about "Jewelbashing people" & mean-spirited articles, etc. They are sometimes upset when Jewel or the EDAs get trashed in the media & ask me how I manage to stay so uneffected by it. I also have many friends who are longtime music biz vets & many of them have noted that I've changed: become less cynical & overtly positive in the past few years. Some even miss my comically sarcastic side, which is alive & well I assure you, but not so prominent online these days. They've noticed these changes have coincided with my involvement in the development of the EDA community over the past few years. I've invited many non-EDA friends to scan through the never ending flow of email messages that the EDAs post to each other on these discussion lists & I've noticed the more cynical ones are always the ones more annoyed or sceptical of it all. This reaction is often triggered by the more flowery sentiments which are usually well intentioned, ie, sending out positive energy, EDA gatherings, thoughts of group hugs & especially the spiritually inspired posting in the wake of Jewel's most recent release "Spirit". Many of these sentiments are exactly the type of thing I too would've gagged on a few years ago & many of my more cynical friends & the media (& some EDAs) find so questionable now. Having personally met hundreds of you at shows & events over the past few years, one of the things I definitely recognize about The EDAs (& Jewel's fanbase in general), is that for many, myself included, this radically anti-cynical approach to life is not just a shared disposition but also an act of conscious dissent. It's a protest against the anger & thoughtlessness that charachterizes so much of our social & artistic temperment these days. Many people will continue to percieve the EDAs as naive, but I'm convinced their vision of community IS a desirable thing. Thus my dedication to the EDAs & my unending support of The Living Room Tour, The EDAFoundation, group volunteering & anything that gets you away from your computers & meeting each other for real. That's where the difference occurs. To many of Jewel's fans, especially the younger ones who never experienced the 60's, Jewel is virtually unique in post-Vietnam War musical history: a female musician & songwriter who is functioning as an ongoing, binding central point in a large scale fan scene that is viewing her music as reflecting their own vision of a better, more hopeful & open minded society. There's far worse visions out there. I'd sooner question the motives of those writers bashing The EDAs for refusing dissillusionment or bashing Jewel over her current lyric content & poetry, than the motives of those who "get it". OK, I am new to this email and from what I have seen I can't believe people have said these things about Jewel. Don't people realize that everyone has bad days and you are making more out of the interviews then what was said. Jewel is not a bad person and if people are now starting to think otherwise, I think you are ridiculous!! Thanks, Amber ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Dec 1998 12:26:38 -0600 (CST) From: Sam Michael Megally Subject: SJC kurt loder people, while i am a bit disappointed by the posts that have been coming through to the list recently, i thought i would not comment on them. instead i have a funny little tidbit that i thought i might share. some of you might remember forever ago (what? 2 weeks) when everyone was up in arms about how rude kurt had been to jewel when she was on mtv. well, i was watching the vh1 behind the music special on madonna, which many of you have undoubtedly seen, and they were documenting the very beginning of madonna's career. they were talking about how tough it had been for her to get critics to take her seriously, etc. well, they showed an excerpt from a rolling stone article calling madonna basically a slut with no talent who wouldn't go far. lo and behold, the author was kurt loder! now, not only was he wrong about her staying power and talent, but he kisses her ass every time she's on mtv. just thought that was damn funny. later... sam from dallas ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Dec 1998 11:36:08 PST From: "Melisa Woo" Subject: anybody agree? Dear EDAs, think about it, how would all of you like it if you were asked the same question for four or more years? Especially if everyone knows the answer to that question. i didn't know jewel before her music came on to the radio, but i don't believe that money and fame changes people...they are just seen in a different light. if she isn't going to sign autographs after her show or something, maybe it's like what someone else said, it's probably because she will get mobbed. i think that a lot of people have put her on some kind of pedastal, like most people do with all of their fave stars or celebrities. And once jewel has fallen from that pedastal it's this big and terrible thing. we chose to put her on that pedastal and if she falls off that pedastal because of who she is, then there's no one to blame but ourselves. Just because she's in the public eye doesn't mean Jewel's always got to please the public. She sings, performs, acts and does all the other things, not because people who haven't even had a conversation with her want her to, but because she wants to. maybe she's just not the interview type of person and sometimes she'll just snap...there are other celebreties out there that do similar things...look at robin williams, you can't get a straight answer out of him even if he wanted to give one...but the difference is he goes around it by making jokes. maybe jewel could deal with the questions another way but that just wouldn't be her style. anyways...those are my thoughts...anybody agree? mel:) angel del cielo ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Dec 1998 14:11:28 EST From: Bumminchic@aol.com Subject: About the Bitchy Jewel topic Sean Hooks said: >Jewel is BETTER than most people and she knows it. Those on this list who criticize her for her >loftiness are just jealous §cott S. said: >You think she is better than you, guess what, she is! >> All you people who keep saying Jewel is better than everyone else, just stop! Jewel is NOT better than anyone. God created all of us equal. I don't usually reply to things that are going on in the list, I'm more of a "watcher." I just had to say something about this topic.... I thought most people on this list didn't idolize Jewel, but was yet inspired by her. Jewel has even stated in interviews that, that is what makes the EDA's different. To me, saying that someone is better than EVERYONE else, in the billions of people on this earth, is called idolizing. I feel that Jewel has had many different personalities. On one hand there's the "sweet, shy Jewel" and sometimes the "sarcastic, funny, bitchy Jewel." I can't say this for sure because I don't know her personally, but this is what I get out of interviews. I am not sticking up for Jewel's behavior lately, because it's wrong for anyone to act that way, but I have been in her shoes. Shoes meaning, being extremely to a grandparent and having then pass away. After my grandmother died, I wanted to be the strong one, but eventually I couldn't eat or sleep. All I'm saying is cut her a little break and don't start analyzing everything she does, not just yet. I don't know if anything I just wrote made sense, but I needed to get it off my chest. Thanks. My name is Rachel and have been an EDA for quite a long time but not as long as some have. I wrote a post yesterday that said I thought what Jewel said on the radio interview was rude. I also asked if anyone else thought that Jewel had a TINY bit of an ego. I am sorry if I offended anyone by writing this. Some of the things I do not think (I don't think her personality has changed any) and did not mean to include that in my post. I was trying to express my opinion but I guess I expressed it to much, because after my post a slew of negative Jewel opinions came in. Maybe I caused some of them and if I did I am sincerely sorry. But, keep in mind that everyone whether EDA or not is entitled to his or her own opinion and whether or not you like that opinion is YOUR business. You do not have to yell or scream at the person but try nicely to give them your opinion which is not even neccessary. I feel that everyone should give their opinion as long as it is reasonable. So again I am sorry. Rachel ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Dec 1998 14:37:40 EST From: RussRive@aol.com Subject: Where has the discussion gone? Don't be fooled by the subject. This post is not meant to insult, criticize, or lambast anybody for what they've written. It's just my opinion on where things have gone recently. About a month ago, I posted to the list expressing my concerns about Alan leaving the list (effective immediately?) as our informant on the inside; the rat, the snitch; the stool pigeon if you will. By the way, thanks for sticking around Alan. In that note, I mentioned a hope that even with the list potentially losing a vital part of what makes it special, that those remaining could resurrect the list through intelligent discussion. Over the past couple of weeks, I think I've seen that. I just wanted to tell everybody that I think it's great. Nothing offers a friendly environment other than good discussion. I'd like to offer one suggestion however; let's make an effort to keep the discussion positive. I don't mean discussing only rosy things about Jewel or her music--that would mean that there probably be very little discussion. I mean let's not accuse others, attempt to invalidate others' opinions (i.e. You're idea is **** or you're just wrong, etc.), or border on flaming. Let's just say (as I've seen several times), "I disagree with this point of so-and-so's argument and this is why". I know I sound like everybody's father telling them what to say and what not to say, that's not my intention. I'm sorry for sounding like that. I'm just posting an opinion. But the list, IMVHO, is moving somewhere. It's nice to see some old timers posting their opinions again. This "bitch" discussion is great! I wish I had something more to add to it. As with Ghostbusters 2, out with the negative slime, in with the positive slime. However, if there is someone who has been working on something or really wants to submit more material, please e-mail me and we can work something out. I need an e-mail by this THURSDAY (the 17th) if you want to be considered for the tape still, even if you haven't started recording yet. After this time, I will have a complete list of songs received and songs expected to be received. Thank you and we have had a lot of good submissions. It's going to be an awesome tape. - -- Mark P.S. Hey out there to my fellow EDAs-- I am shocked and appalled from the recent emails, as are many people are also. I wouldn't like to think that the new EDAs think this is what the Everyday Angels are all about! The constant bickering and complaining about Jewel has really gotten me slightly irratated. Like the rest of the people say something along the lines of "...she's only human..." "...her GRANDFATHER JUST DIED! she has to be going through some rough times..." I agree with them. Does everyone really, honestly need fifty some-odd emails of people complaining about how "stuck up" and "prissy" has gotten? I didn't think so, either. But as some person a long time ago said, and as some character from the movie Bambi said, (I believe it was Thumper's mom) "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all" - --Sonora, The Mischevious Angel ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Dec 1998 12:57:16 -0800 (PST) From: Morrissey Subject: Why I like Jewel I read a post from someone that said something like ask yourself why you like jewel. I have to say it isn't because of her personality because well how can you ppl claim to know someone who you really don't? You may think you do because you see her on shows have all her albums have her poetry but I believe she is a actor, and darn good one or she wouldn't be making a living the way she is. But back to why I like her I will be totally honest I like her 'cause she is hot! But after I got over her amazingly good looks I started really loving her music. But I think you ppl need to keep a more open eye to things she may do, because she is a girl, and the girls I know can be the cutest little angels you have ever seen then the next day you would swear they are the devil and possessed by the devil. Anyway I had a question does anyone know what kind of horses jewel has 'cause I'm a huge horse lover.
