And it was awesome to hear my favorite song off of Spirit performed live (Absence of Fear). The only thing negative is that Tom asked the same silly questions (about living in her van, growing up in Alaska) that she's been asked for the past 4 years. Still, it was a great, solid 20 minutes of Jewel! Today is the eve that tickets for the Brissie show go on sale. Being as impulsive and spontaneous as I am, i have devised a plan to travel a bit and see more of Jewel. As we are totally starved of her in performance, i wanted to make the most of it and see as many shows as i could. Thats the problem. i need help. i was wondering if there were any eda's that were willing and able to put me up for a night or 2 on my journey. I'm not sure when all the dates are or anything yet, nothing is concrete as i have just hatched this idea ten minutes ago. i realise sydney tickets go on sale tomorrow, as do the brissie tickets and i don't know how to get any for melbourne either. Basically i need some carpet to sleep on and perhaps a provisional ticket (one that is essentially bought for me but if plans fall through, there is someone else to take it). i'm sorry about the late notice but i would be eternally indebted if anyone could help me. please contact me through e and hopefully i'll still be around before i go out to get tickets up here. thanks heaps eda's...take care bodhi, angel down under ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Dec 1998 23:38:16 +0000 From: "Kevin J. I love Jewel's art as much as anyone on this list but i will not forget that an artist is a person too! And what makes someone perfect (in my eyes) is not perfection, but rather all the glorious imperfections and the way they are dealt with. This is why i admire people like Jewel, John Lennon, Joel Hodgson as well as people like my friends Mandy, Eric, and Stacy (who are not famous...but just as speial in my eyes). Jewel's not a goddess, just a person with a great talent and good ideas. Now i don't know about the EDA's scaring me.. but I've never met any of you in person so maybe we will see.. But the impression i get from the majority of messages is a good one. Many of you seem friendly, caring, and at least a notch more selfless than many other people i know. But there are the cynics and scary members of the list too. And though i wouldn't consider "Angel Food" to be anything more than a cute name for show recordings...the religious-like devotion some of the members of the list display is enough to make me shudder. But hey.. if everyone thought like me, this world would be a very boring place (probably even more boring than if everyone thought like someone else :) ) So i guess, if i could tell the world just two things... it's that yes, kindness does matter, but i think understanding is in a league of its own, and it also matters. So please try to understand that there are no gods upon this earth and if there are, i'm pretty sure they don't hold guitars, live in a $1 million house and have record deals. So all my best to the readers of this list, to jewel and her staff, and to anyone out there with a kind heart. Let inspiration roam free and idolatry rest. I called in on Tom Synder last night and I got through. They told me my question would be used and I was next on the tv! Then, they hung up on me!!!!!!!! I've never seen Jewel in concert or in person and I thought I would get to talk to that angel on earth. I guess it's not my day. I am going to cry myself to sleep now :o(. It's floating at $17 everywhere, but only $15 at HMV; they also have a two-CD W&S/W&S2 set for $30, which I picked up. I have used up my ten stamps on my HMV club card, and only paid $5. :-) This is a solid record, as in rock solid. You've got Chantal Kreviazuk leading off, waking you up and knocking you off your ass with "Surrounded." Paula Cole follows Chantal with the oh-so-catchy "I Don't Want To Wait" (love that clapping). Sheryl Crow has a great rendition of "Strong Enough," which sounds rather nice, with a bit of an acoustic bent to it. Natalie Imbruglia's "Wishing I Was There" makes me happy to know Left of the Middle is on its way to me. I could go on, but suffice to say, this would be a really nice present for your favourite music fan. Natalie Merchant looks gorgeous on the cover. :-) Oh yeah, I almost forgot. :) Track nineteen is none other than Sarah Slean, with an absolutely stunning version of "I Know." Her debut record Pieces Of You was of extreme beauty, with a touch of a touch of folk. Nobody could see that coming. Suddenly, it was there. Now, more than three years later, there is the successor. With 10 millions of sold records, numerous tv appearances, a Star Spangled Banner while opening last yee ars Super Bowl and a collection of poems to be listed in the New York Tii mes bestseller list for several months in between. Listening to Spirit, oo ne could believe that Jewel Kilcher isnt impressed at all by this overwhelmming success. Songs like `Deep water, Down so long or Hands take your haa nd, accompany you on long walks, whisper in your ear and then, give you a shy kiss on your cheek. Pieces of you may help you through a lonely night, Spirit probably will save your live." - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ---- Well, I cant say this a better way... To slightly restore the heavily damaaged reputation of German press: This Spirit review (poorly translated by me :-) ) I found in Musikexpress/Sound- Magazine, issue 12/1998. Needless to say they gave it a 100% rating (6 out of 6, or phenomenal) and delclared Spirit a must-have. Some more facts? Jewel on the front cover (sub-titled The sweetest temptation since they invented good songs...), a one-page Spii rit advertisement and a good five-page story. Probably this will increase tthe amount of Germans who at least know this great artist. Or, to once more quote the ME/Sound: Women are on their way in international music biz. But nearly no other actress has that kind of style as the 24-years old Jewel Kilcher ... Theyre just right ! I've also noticed that some EDA's seem to have been truly upset by some of the negative criticisms, such as the thoroughly mean-spirited (pun intended) article in the Globe & Mail. Perhaps it might be worthwhile citing a story from my childhood, when in June 1967 Richard Goldstein, one of the most respected rock critics of his day who wrote for the Village Voice and other magazines, wrote an extremely negative review in the New York Times of a new album by my favourite band. Goldstein said it was garbage, one of the worst records he ever heard, definitely the worst by that particular band, and that the band was finished. I felt very hurt somehow by this stinging criticism, and it REALLY irked me at the time, but in retrospect, I think MAYBE Goldstein was wrong, and he probably changed his mind afterwards. Oh, the name of the album you ask? An obscure recording called Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.... My point being simply, don't take negative press for Jewel too much to heart. As one of the many intelligent posts on this subject said, >Believe me, the fact that this album polarizes people so much is just >great. The day all critics like a Jewel album is the day we know we >are in trouble..... :-) >Cheers ! > Cris Right on Cris! I've been saying similar comments to many EDA's for the last few weeks. Don't let the cynics ruin your enjoyment of the lovely music Jewel is currently offering to the world. I'm reading all the posts that were written about the Disney chat. There is one thing that we must remember. This was a DISNEY chat. Aka, for disney channel viewers, aka little kids. It is true that this chat was open to other people, but mainly it was created for little kids who are inspired by Jewel. Some of the questions may have been repetitive to us, but not to them. Just remember, some of those questions may have been asked by future EDA's!
