Spirit is a very big change but for the better. It really shows what she is capable of if she just sings. Concentrating on her vocals instead of vocals and guitar is great because then she can really let loose when she sings. Well that is my thought at this time. Until next time be good to each other and take care. The Dark Angel ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Dec 1998 19:10:00 +0200 (IST) From: Michael Regev Subject: NJC: I'm back!!! Well, as you may have understood from the subject line, I'm back. I've been away since the end of the former academic year (around mid-august), and was supposed to come back at the start of this academic year, five or six weeks ago. unfortunatly, due to a students strike, the year only started now. I have, in the meantime, had a break-up with my girlfriend, gone through bootcamp, been active politically, celebrated my 19th birthday, gotten a copy of "Spirit" (a very nice CD, though PoY is still better, IMHO), and generally had a lot of free time disappear, noone knows where. Well, I'll let you get back to real JC stuff. bye 4 now, 42, Tuff - TIE (the 1st Israeli EDA) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Dec 1998 12:13:34 EST From: CHERuBUG2@aol.com Subject: Rolling Stone intv. on AOL >>"Sometimes I want to take that Volkswagen van and affix it to a burning cross," Jewel, tired of the myth, blurts at one point, shattering stereotype Number Four. I moved and for some reason I couldn't get online for over a month - how dreadful - and my mailbox was overloaded and, well, in other words, now I'm back and I'm glad it's so. Today I got the latest issue of SPIEGEL (which is kind of like TIMES, I guess) and guess what I see in the table of contents: "The new album by Jewel." Isn't that exciting!!! Wrong guess. I immediately turn to page 227 and read through the brief article. Man, I tell you, it's devastating. Really, really awful. I'm so furious with the editors of that magazine and if I could, I'd just smack 'em right now. No, I guess I wouldn't, but it's just not fair. I'm not saying that everyone has to like Jewel or her music, but to write such a nasty review is really beyond me. Maybe there are other EDA's in Germany, who've read the article (Dec. 7th issue) and know what I'm talking about. If you guys want me to translate the article, I'd be glad (under the circumstances) to do it. Jewel was looking as beautiful as ever (of course), but she seemed to be a bit tired or uninterested... most of the questions/comments that Dini made were met with a simple "uh-huh" or "mm-hmmm". Oh well, I guess we can't blame her... it must be very exhausting doing all these shows and getting asked the same questions over and over. Anyways, that's just my 2 cents on the subject. I love Spirit! Steve ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 07 Dec 1998 15:58:13 -0500 From: Me! Subject: Article in the Globe Angels, Hey! How's everyone doing? A few minutes ago, I flipped open the Arts section of "The Globe & Mail", to see a large picture of Jewel accompaining a rather disheartening article. I won't type it up as it's rather long, but I *think* if you go to the Globe's site (I don't know the addy, but I'm sure if you search it's there) they'll have the article. Basically, the Globe's critics don't like Jewel. (It seems you can either like or hate her at the moment, right? :p) Oh, well. Some people just don't know what they're missing. *smiles* Well, have a wonderful day! Remember, if anyone wants to talk, I'm here. I really love Jewel and her music, and her new album was simply fantastic, I haven't stopped listening to it since I got it. I was also wondering whether A Night Without Armor was avaliable in England, because I have checked every book shop near me and not one of them is stocking it, can anybody help with this? - -- Adam ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Dec 1998 17:34:14 EST From: W1GGY2@aol.com Subject: NJC: EDAF event results! Hi, all! Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who turned out for the Boston FoodBank event Saturday! It was a lot of fun and we managed to sort through 13,000 pounds of food (along with other volunteers on the shift - 36 in all) which will result in 202 meals PER VOLUNTEER!! It's amazing what a few hours can produce. After the FoodBank, we invaded the Boston Beerworks for sour cream & chive french fries, pumpkin ravioli and other delicious eats. Then some of us went to the good old Kendall Cafe to catch Imogen Heap, who was excellent. I highly suggest any Tori fans to see her if you can. In fact, she's supposed to be at CBGB's Gallery in NY on December 15 and I plan to go, so any area EDA's should definitely join me! 26 million people are going hungry in this country. If anyone would like information on volunteering at a Foodbank in their area, contact me and I'll give you the information. Thanks eveyone! Amy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 07 Dec 1998 15:45:29 PST From: "Scott Evans" Subject: Spirit MTV Review / Rolling Stone Cover I don't think this has been posted, so here goes.. (BTW, I don't agree with the Life Uncommon part).. This album reminds us that Jewel is an extraordinary vocalist, not just the girlish singer as demonstrated on her OTHER mega-hit "You Were Meant for Me." Here, she captures moments big and small, from a soaring falsetto to a hushed whisper. On the solo-acoustic "Fat Boy," her hushed delivery adds weight to a tender character sketch; on the muscular "Down So Long," Jewel goes full-throttle and also delivers one throaty note in the chorus that alone nearly makes Spirit a worthwhile experience. A more band-like collection, Spirit is impressive in arrangement, as well. Warm, dense and graceful, this is pop music at its most organic (except maybe "A Life Uncommon," a cliched freedom anthem that sounds constructed simply as a means to reach her new arena-sized crowds). Ultimately, Spirit is a rewarding bit of creative expanse by an artist whose rapid and huge success could have squashed her right in her path. Neal Weiss - -- I got the Rolling Stone! I haven't read it yet, though I do think I'll be satisfied by what some of you have said.. Does anyone else think that the "half-face picture" on the inside cover would've made a better cover? They could've put that part on the front, and the other half on the inside cover so that it folded out...Oh well, it doesn't really matter.. just thought I'd ask.. - -- If you could hear the voice in my heart It would tell you I'm afraid I'm alone Won't somebody please hold me Release me, show me the meaning of mercy?
