There are also two extra songs which aren't going to be used unless we need filler space. In other words, this tape is ready to go. However, there might be room for another song or two, maybe even more. The point is if you have a tape that you never sent or are you are procrastinating on sending a tape, please tell me now because this thing is going to go in production soon. If you don't know what the EDA Cover Tape 2 is and want to know, I'll give a brief description -- it's a cassette where the EDAs (list members) sing Jewel's songs, providing the vocals and usually providing guitar or another instrument in the background. Then the tape is given out through the list. As soon as I get the very last submissions in, I will update people on the status of the tape. - -- Mark ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Dec 1998 01:35:46 EST From: UMCaner74@aol.com Subject: SJC/NJC: A Great Discovery! Hi Everyone!, I just wanted to tell everyone about an incredibly talented singer/songwriter I saw perform in Pittsburgh, PA the other night. Judging by everyones love of music on this list, I figured everyone would be interested. I actually found out about her (Nancy Micciulla) from her post on the Patty Griffin list a few weeks ago. She mentioned that she was playing a show in Pittsburgh, and anyone interested in coming, to e-mail her with any questions. I did write to her, and she told me a little bit about her music, and was very excited that I was willing to drive to see a "lowly" musician such as herself. So, as I made the drive to Pittsburgh, I had no idea what to expect, other than that she had her own material, and that she played covers of a lot of artists, including Jewel, Sheryl Crow, Indigo Girls, etc. I arrived just before she started playing. Anxiously awaiting the start of her performance, I found a place to sit. Even though she's just starting out, there were approximately 20 or so people there. Apparently she had won an Unplugged competition at college last year, so there are people in her school and in the area that know of her. Now we get to her performance ..after she sang about 2 lines, I could not believe what I was hearing. By the time she was done with her 1st song, I could not believe how strong, yet perfectly crystalline her voice was! I was already very happy I had made the trip to see her. :) :) :) She is very much influenced by Jewel, and some of my other favorites, but she was also very much unique. She played numerous covers, all of which she did wonderfully, but made each song very much her own...it sounded somewhat like the original artist, but with her own special touch that made it so much better than your average cover song. One standout was her cover of one of my favorite Sheryl Crow songs, a rare B side called Sad Sad World. Where she really shines though, is her original material. Her lyrics are so amazing, and her voice is so expressive. Her one song Silhouette brought tears to my eyes. It is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. She sings with a passion in her voice that you rarely find anywhere out there. Her voice just grips you, and it's like you can't help but feel what she's feeling. So as not to go on forever here, to sum up her performance in one word, I would say Breathtaking fits quite well. After she was finished performing, I talked to her for a while and asked her how she'd feel about me posting something on this list. So all of Jewel's fans can find out about her music. She said that would be wonderful! I also I asked if she had a tape or demo, because I'm sure a lot of people on this list would love to hear her. Unfortunately, she does not have one right now, but is in the process of working on such a thing. She's hoping to have some sort of a demo finished by the end of this year. I have been e-mailing with Nancy since her performance. She is so busy at school to do much self promotion or whatever. Since she was so incredible, and such a sweet person, I've offered to help her "Get Heard". So, anyone that would be interested in hearing her, will have a better chance in finding out about her. Anyone that is interested to hear her when she gets her demo finished is invited to do this..e-mail me privately with your address. I'll make a list of everyone that is interested and send you a tape out as soon as I get one for myself. For now, you don't need to send me a blank tape. I would be happy to help her out, and have you guys get to hear her amazing voice. Due to the large number of cool Jewel fans on this list...If response gets to be too overwhleming, I may have to ask for a tape and return postage at some point. OK..well I'm going to stop this now! You get the point already..I'm SO Happy I've found another wonderful musician!! :) :) :) Hope everyone has a great weekend! One such literary analyst is MTV's own Kurt Loder, who in an interview with Jewel last week scolded her for misusing one word in particular -- and received an appropriate, though playful, tongue-lashing from the singer- songwriter. "There's a line you have [in one of the poems]," Loder said, "'There are nightmares on the sidewalks/there are jokes on TV/ there are people selling thoughtlessness with such casualty.' Casualty doesn't mean that, does it? Casualty's like a guy gets his arm blown off. I mean isn't that..." "That's a type of casualty," Jewel said. "What?" Loder asked. "It's a type of casualty that ..." she responded. "No, really. I thought you were trying to say casualness," he said. "No, casualty," Jewel affirmed. "Oh, OK," Loder said, "All right. Are you a tech person? Do you take computers on the road, do you log on, e-mail?" "No, I'm a bit archaic," Jewel confessed, "I mean, I still write everything by hand. It's quite archaic." "Wow," Loder replied. "It is wow," she said, "I'm dyslexic as heck. I mean, I just can't type well." "Really?" Loder said, "that'd be a problem for a writer." "It is a bit of problem," Jewel said, "I mean, putting the book together. Everything was done by hand. I had to recopy it legibly to get it..." "That explains casualty probably," he said. "That probably does," Jewel said, "[you're a] smart-ass for pointing that out. Next topic." "I don't know," Loder answered, "I just want to help." "Publicly," she said, laughing. "If you wanted to help, you could have taken me aside, in a little corner." "Oh, later," he said. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 Dec 1998 14:23:45 +0000 From: Marc Woodworth Subject: SOLO: Women Singer-Songwriters in Their Own Words Dear fellow Jewel lover- We are very happy to announce that the website for SOLO: Women Singer-Songwriters in Their Own Words is finally up. I mean > it has such a awesome message. I figured I would try and start a topic for > discussion. I was wondering what this song means to you? Does it have a > special meaning or can you relate to it in some way? What hands means to me... I'll break it down, bit by bit. "If I could tell the world just one thing It would be that we're all okay" I have conflicting feelings about that line. It depends on what sort of "OK" I think she means. If she means than everyone is worthwhile and good enough, then I already knew that and I don't need her to tell me. If she means that everyone is doing just fine, then I straight up disagree... I'm more inclined to agree with Raine Maida's lyric "Sometimes it's just not okay.". For real, sometimes it isn't. "and not to worry because worry is wasteful and useless in times like these" Well I suppose that's meant to be comforting... it sounds more condescending... like "Get over it, what's your problem?"... but I don't expect that from Jewel so I guess it should be comforting. It's not, though. "I won't be made useless, I won't be idle with despair" Strikes a chord... gently... righteous defiance can lend a shiver to the spine, if sung doggedly enough... "I will gather/govern myself around my faith That lights the darkness most feared" Faith makes me uneasy. I think it's unhealthy. Skepticism works better, I think. Faith is like replacing sight with a painting. It might be beautiful, it might even be accurate... but you're still more likely to trip. (that being said, it's not like I don't have faith in anything) "My hands are small, I know But they're not yours, they are my own" This means NOTHING to me. I see it as Jewel's all-time creative low point, from what I've experienced. No, that's not true at all. It means that a person should do what they can and shouldn't listen when others tell them it's no use to try. I just think it's phrased TERRIBLY. So the lines aren't bad... just badly built. ^_^ "Poverty stole your golden shoes It didn't steal your laughter" I love the way she says "poverty", or at least how she's said it on Letterman and Today (still don't have Spirit^_^)... anyway, it means times can get tough but you live. "Heartache came to visit me But I knew it wasn't ever after" My, how inspiring. ... man, I'm way too jaded. This song makes me feel bad about myself for NOT being uplifted. "We will fight, not out of spite But someone has to stand up for what's right" Noble words, but Jesus, this was put together even worse than the chorus... it really bothers me when people put so little effort into composition. "For where there's a man who has no voice There, ours shall go singing" Free Mumia Abu-Jamal! Word to Amnesty International. It's another noble sentiment but besides a vague righteous stirring it doesn't make me feel anything. "In the end, only kindness matters" Well it obviously mattered more than maintaining any sort of smooth flow to this song. Without a context, this phrase doesn't mean much to me. It doesn't have a home in this song. "I will get down on my knees, and I will pray" Okay, I'll admit to a slight shiver when she sings this. But it's accompanied by a slight uneasiness regarding Jewel's seemingly new brand of spirituality. chorus again... then... "We are never broken". But Jewel... I thought everything breaks sometimes!? That works better for me. I think everyone's broken a lot of the time... "We are God's hands/eyes/reflections of God" Jewel wants me for a sunbeam. Man, what this song really means to me is a dip in Jewel's quality. I don't hate it, no matter how critical I seem, but the harder I think about it the harder it falls.
