Hi everyone :-) OK...I always realized that just posting the article about the lawsuit against Jewel and Lenedra does no real harm at all, afterall it WILL be in newspapers and all over the net. I perhaps made a hasty post earlier (not allowing even the article) in my rush to get moving and working on the "Jewel video project"....there's LOTS to do tonight. However as I said before, no further posts discussing this can be put through in the *near* future. (if this lawsuit comes to trial someday, that is another matter....we'll deal with that if/when it happens) Please trust me on this....there are very good reasons for this stance :-) So....anyway, to make it easier for those wondering what the heck is going on....below is one article on the subject. Mike :-) P.S. By the way, over 40 of you sent in an article you had found about this..... ****** Former manager sues Jewel, blames mother LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Jewel's former manager is seeking more than $10 million from the singer, claiming she was fired after Jewel's mother engineered a rift between them. Inga Vainshtein, who says she discovered the 24-year-old singer five years ago in San Diego, filed a lawsuit Monday in Los Angeles County Superior Court. The suit claims that Jewel's mother, Lenedra Carroll, shadowed Vainshtein as a "co-manager" to learn how to handle Jewel's business affairs, then urged her daughter to fire Vainshtein when she learned enough to do it on her own. Jewel's mother also told the singer that advice from Vainshtein had to be approved by a "channeller" who purportedly sought advice from an entity referred to as "Z," the lawsuit claims. A message seeking comment from Jewel's publicist at Atlantic Records was not returned Monday. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Dec 1998 15:00:00 -0800 (PST) From: Morrissey Subject: Utah EDA? I have to admit Spirit is getting better and better everytime I listen to it---anyone else experiencing this?? This happened with POY as well, so I guess it's just a pattern with me, but after a few weeks of getting used to a newer sound, I love Spirit. Which brings me to a heavy prediction for Jewel's next album. I truly feel that she wanted to do Spirit and send a message to all her listeners, but I think she is gonna totally rock out on her next record. I just have that feeling---and if any of you angels have seen her live in the last 2 years, espcially on Lilith (which many of you have), then you know that the girl really does like to bring down the house. I think we are going to start hearing a lot more electric guitar, which I personally am anxiously awaiting.....I have enjoyed watching and listening to her develop her playing skills. I think her next album will be a break from the sweet poetic Jewel that we know. Her lyrics, no doubt will always be entrancing, but I think she will have the attitude that she has done 2 innocent albums, and on the next one she will want to be more adventurous and LOUD! Just my opinion, country, rock, blues, it will be fun to see who's prediction is right in the next couple of years. I think she is much more >capable of writing more creative music with deeper lyrics. I have a couple comments about that statement. :) First, in defense of (some) country music - it's not all trite, meaningless garbage. There are actually some very talented songwriters & musicians working in country music. I'll agree, there's a good deal of insipid, unimaginative country music... but then, there's a good deal of insipid, unimaginative music in ANY genre. To imply that something's not creative or deep just because it's classed as "country" music is really unfair. Please, try listening to some before you assume the whole category is cowboy boots, big hats, and belt buckles the size of a dinner plate. :) Chris Knight & Matraca Berg are two country artists I'd consider to be very capable of creative & imaginative music & lyrics. Second, Jewel *is* capable of creative, deep lyrics. But let's be honest - she's also had some pretty straightforward, unimaginative songs, as well. (I'm Sensitive, and What's Simple Is True come to mind off hand... neither of them strike me as requiring all that much imagination, and What's Simple Is True just strikes me as sort of forced...) Honestly, when I compare Jewel's lyrical ability against other artists that I'd like, I'd say that Jewel's lyrical creativity & imagination bat about .500 against the others. Meaning, some of them beat her out, some of them get beat by her. She's got a fantastic voice, and some really good songs... but there are songs & singers that I like better, too. Third: Stylistically, I wouldn't consider a lot of Jewel's music all *that* far from country to begin with... there's a similarity (to me, at least) in lyrical themes & vocal styles that Jewel's music does share, to a limited extent. There's plenty of parallels that are there. Of course, if you have some sort of blind hatred of any form of music classed as "country", you'll refuse to hear them... but they're there. :) Kevin - ---------- Kevin Pease kbpease@boston.crosswinds.net ICQ UIN: 3106063 AOL IM: kbpease http://www.crosswinds.net/boston/~kbpease/ "Today my heart is big and sore / Trying to push right through my skin / Won't see you any more / I guess that's finally sinking in / 'Cause you can't make somebody see / With the simple words you say / All the beauty from within / Sometimes they just look away..." ---(patty griffin, "goodbye")--- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Dec 1998 16:04:15 -0800 From: jacques187 Subject: Regis And Kathy Lee Tape?
