Two people look at the same act of unkindness. All one sees is the casualness of the person committing the unkindness. The second sees the impact that unkindness had on the lives of others. Who is the wiser? Who is more sensitive? Jewel has an innocence and an intuitive way of seeing things at their heart. She sees what really matters. I guess that's because her own heart is still so innocent and free even after all the fame and fortune. Kurt's innocence is a "casualty" as they say. Hey all - hope you had a great thanksgiving, I was hoping to have a review of Spirit done by now, but I can't do it yet- I WANT to like it more and I'm trying, but am still kind of wishy washy about it. Right now I would give it about 3 stars out of 5, but I'm a harsh critic because I thought POY was a nearly flawless masterpiece. Did I want POY II- yes! Do I have to accept Spirit for what it is? Yes, but I don't have to love it. I just think that overall, by adding the additional musicians and post production she takes a bit away from the thing that made her so wonderfuland different in the first place, that being just a girl, a guitar, and a voice from the heavens, with little else to interfere. I feel like the old timers (like my parents) felt when Bob Dylan went from folkie to electric in the 60's. I do think the second half of Spirit (songs 7-13) is much cooler and less "poppy' than the first half, and I think Fat Boy is a great piece, like the minimalistic little slice of life stories that made up POY. I was surprised to see that it got 0 votes for best song in Brett's (I think it was his) recent poll. Anyways- lol- gimme a few more days for an in depth review., then send the flames my way. Next, someone else posted about Beau Sia and the Night Without Armor II - the revenge and how great and funny it was. I had previously ripped this book, but decided maybe I hadn't read enough to get it and being a fair person gave it another shot. I was back at Tower records a few days ago and i read like 20 of the poems. And .....my first thoughts were correct- IT'S HORRIBLE! Not funny, not romantic, not even interesting,- just a total lack of personal creativity and misfired attempt at comedy. Like I said before- he claims to have written it in 4 hours, and it shows. I think maybe i'm somewhat qualified to judge his work, as I am a writer and poet myself. Anyways - at least it inspired me to try and get my stuff out there a bit- I emailed Gerritt- who has a great page (EDA yearbook, etc.) to see if he is still putting up EDA poetry on his webpage, and if anyone else is on their site, please email me. Finally,- wednesday (Dec 2 taping date) I'm gonna be on Jeopardy as a contestant. The show (or maybe shows :) - ha ) won't air for like 6 weeks because they tape a bunch at a time, but anyways- when you pass the initial test- they give you a little personality card to fill out , and you have to put down 5 hobbies or anecdotes, etc., and I put the EDA's down as one, but you have no idea which one Alex Trebek will ask you about (for spontaniety maybe?) but if he does ask me about the - EDA'S , I ll post the air date of when it will be on in January. No serious injuries as no vehicles were involved, but my trusty MAC decided to bite the dust.... I'm on at a friends place & will likely not be on again until my home computer is back up late next week sometime. I did want to say hi, though & let you know all is basically well. If anything timely needs to be relayed to the EDAs, I'll give Mike a ring & he can pass on general info in the meantime, as I did last night. For all TV confirmed info, you can check Jewel's website, too. Even though other facets of the website are still being developed, I'm trying to keep the current calendar up to date as much as possible. The main reason I'm popping in today is to address an issue that I'm told is of big concern to many EDAs. Let me see if I can accurately describe the underlying feeling happening in the wake of my last major news post that informed you all that I'll be posting news only on the website from now on. (Is that a sentence???!) OK, here goes. From what I know, I think many of you fall into one of these three emotional catagories: 1) I fear the EDAs are being abandoned by Jewel's management. 2) I fear the EDAs are now less important in Jewel's eye's. 3) I know growth is inevitable, but I can't help now feeling less connected. Does that about cover it? Am I on track here? To all EDAs who can relate to the above, please read this, believe it & take it to heart. ALL THREE of the above emotional scenarios are not neccesary! I never had any intention of completely leaving the lists & we will continue to be involved with each other in many new & enjoyable ways. The J-team is quite aware of the EDAs & its a relationship we will continue to nourish, HONEST! We love the EDAs!! Everyone on Jewel & Lenedra's staff are enamored by the EDAs & speak high praises of the many incredible things you've done together & individually. Just keep doing em! Get involved! Another great example happened again during this recent MTV thing. The MTV management people said that the EDAs were THE MOST ENJOYABLE FANBASE THEY EVER WORKED WITH!! This is really saying something since they've worked with almost everyone. These comments did make there way back to both Atlantic Records management & Jewel's management & all were extremely proud of this, with good reason. I've been telling people for years that the EDAs are generally the most thoughtful, intelligent & just plain coolest large group of people I've ever been involved with. I have every intention of creating more situations where we can work with & enjoy each other. Right now we're all simply growing & we would love to have you grow along with us. We truly feel wonderful things are happening for us all. We will stay connected & we love the EDAs! PoY has feeling to it, this cd >I found repeats a lot. Hmmmm, but what is it repeating? There is no question Spirit is in many ways different. Jewel as I've said before, is able to put what she is feeling deep down, into words. Poy explored many feelings. These feelings touched many people in very deep and special ways. Spirit is in many ways even more of an emotional expression. The thing is that the emotions are different this time. They are much broader and deeper then Poy. I probably shouldn't write this but what the hell, what's simple is true, right? There is a definate repeating theme in Spirit. It is the fact that a person can achieve all that there is to achieve, success, fame, fortune. She can have all the neat toys, all the neat boys, and somehow, somehow there is no joy. You wake up and find that the dream is achieved but that there was a deeper, much simpler dream there all along. "I stare at my hands and wonder how they got so far away. " So what's the dream that brings out so much sparkle and need in our lady friend? Here is a another quote from her book, which I highly recomend everybody purchase. The poem is called - Freedom. "Having mutilated and freed myself from the very wings which for so very long held me aloft. I have cast my heart like a purple fruit, towards the violent earth far from the heavens of your arms." Pretty intense isn't it? There's nothing without love. It's simple and it's true. Jewel's words are lonely and speak of feelings intense and deep within her. She is a couragous woman to have expressed so much so openly. But then, that's what makes her such a Jewel. There is a gravity pulling at her heart and soul. It's called love. Or more precisely the need for love in one's life. I hope one day she finds it. That she finds that special someone who will meld her to his side forever. That will lift her heart and her spirit to the clouds and fly them into the stars. Oh well, that's just my humble opinion. "In the end, only kindness matters" "don't bother knocking on my door this time" "Loved for centuries, in many forms."
