Today's Subjects: ----------------- My EDA newbie FAQ [Paul Schreiber Subject: My EDA newbie FAQ Hi! On November 17, Jewel's second album, "Spirit," was released. This is sure to bring Jewel many new fans. I'm also sure that many new EDAs have just joined this list. You probably have lots of questions. I know I sure did when I joined, about a year ago. Last month, I sat down to write this FAQ. MrBB was kind enough to look it over, and provided me with several valuable suggestions. The FAQ contains a fairly complete Jewel discography (except for promos), a list of books about her, and pointers to a few excellent web sites. More than that, it contain answers to questions about this list, and about EDAs (Everday Angels). The FAQ isn't done yet, and if you have any suggestions or corrections for me, I'd love to hear them. Don't forget to read Mike's Jewel FAQ, which contains a wealth of biographical information on Jewel, and other stuff this FAQ doesn't cover. ** NOTE FROM MIKE: It's not really my FAQ.....it was written about 3 years ago by a few pioneers of the Jewel list, and it's woefully outdated. Since I took over the list in June 1997, I've only made some subtle changes in it....hopefully this newbie FAQ by Paul will give me the impetus to update and shorten it :-) ** later, Paul shad 96c / 3A CS / mac activist / eda / fumbler fan of / jewel / sophie b. hawkins / sarah slean / steve poltz / / x-files / buffy / dawson's creek / habs / bills / 49ers / t h i n k d i f f e r e n t. B Jewel Questions C Everyday Angel Questions D List Questions E More Information, Official FAQ, et cetera A What is a FAQ? - ---------------- FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions. This file contains several frequently asked questions and their answers regarding Jewel and the Everyday Angels. B Jewel Questions - ----------------- 1. What is Jewel's full name? Jewel's full name is Jewel Kilcher. She has no middle name. The name Jewel was chosen for two reasons: it is Jewel's mother, Lenedra Jewel Carroll's middle name, and it is also the original name of her paternal grandfather, Juel Kilcher. 2. What albums does Jewel have? Jewel's first album, "Pieces of You" debuted in February 1995 and went multi-platinum. Her second album, "Spirit," was released on November 17, 1998. Jewel's albums are on Atlantic records. There many singles available as well. See Adam's and Chris' sites for more information (next section). 3. What other albums does Jewel appear on? Jewel has appeared on many compilation albums, and has sung harmony vocals on some other work. There are numerous promotional albums that can be found, and Adam has done an good job of listing them on his Jewel web site. http://jewel.zoonation.com/ Another excellent discography can be found on Chris' site. http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~cmgroves/Jewel/CDsVideos/ There is a song titled "Jewel" by the Cranes. This has nothing to do with Jewel, though. Because of her work on the three songs on One Left Shoe, you can catch her voice on numerous singles and promos of Steve's work as well. One Left Shoe (Steve Poltz) Silver Lining, Impala, I Thought I Saw You Last Night (harmony vocals) Taking The World By Donkey (The Rugburns) Old Lover's House (harmony vocals) 4. Who is Steve Poltz? Who are the Rugburns? Steve Poltz is a San Diego-based singer and songwriter. He lead a band called the Rugburns for roughly ten years. In March 1998, Steve released his first solo album, "One Left Shoe." Jewel and Steve have written many songs together, including You Were Meant For Me. Steve can be seen in the second video for that song. (The first one was directed by Sean Penn and is rarely aired.) At one point, Jewel and Steve were dating. They no longer are; they still are good friends. The Rugburns varied in terms of size and artists, but a good answer is to say they consisted of Steve Poltz, "Dr." Rob Driscoll, Gregory Page and Jeff "Stinky" Aafedt. They have two full-length albums, "Morning Wood" and "Taking the World by Donkey," (now out of print) one EP, "Mommy I'm Sorry" and one single, "Hitchhiker Joe." There are numerous Rugburns tapes as well. Jewel toured with the Rugburns several years ago; she brought Steve along with her on some of her tours promoting Pieces of You. To subscribe to the ruglist, send an email to: listproc@mcfeeley.cc.utexas.edu in the body of the message, put: subscribe ruglist Eric's Rugburns page is at: http://home1.gte.net/ericj1/rugburns/index.html 5. Where was Jewel born? Jewel was born in Payson, Utah. She was not born in Alaska. 6. What's Jewel's book of poetry? In May of 1998, Jewel released a book of poetry titled "A Night Without Armor." The book has appeared on several bestseller lists, including The New York Times and is currently (as of October 1998) in its fifteenth printing. Selected poems from the book are also available on CD and cassette. It is published by HarperCollins. The ISBN is 0060191988. 7. What movie is Jewel going to be in? Jewel is the female lead in a movie currently entitled "Ride with the Devil." The movie is directed by Ang Lee. It's based on a book called "Woe to Live On" by Daniel Woodrell. The book has been republished by Pocket Books and has ISBN 0671001361. The movie is scheduled to hit theatres in March of 1999. It was filmed primarily in Kansas during the spring of 1998. The title of the movie _may_ have been changed to "Absence of Fear." 8. What do WWSYS, FG, YWMFM, POY, ANWA and STL mean? Pieces of You (POY) is the title of Jewel's first album. One of the tracks on the album is called "Pieces of You" as well. Who Will Save Your Soul (WWSYS) is one of the songs from POY, and was the first single. You Were Meant For Me (YWMFM) is one of Jewel's co-writes with Steve Poltz. It lasted 64 weeks on the Billboard charts, the longest run of a song to date. Don't confuse this with the Sheryl Crow song, "My Favorite Mistake," which is abbreviated MFM. Foolish Games (FG) is the third single from POY. A Night Without Armor (ANWA) is Jewel's book of poetry (see above). Save The Linoleum (STL) is an early promotional release by Jewel. It's very rare. If you find a copy, pick it up! 9. Jewel rerecorded YWMFM and FG for the radio. The radio edits of these songs have something of a less acoustic sound to them. The FG radio version is very easy to find; the YWMFM one is a bit more difficult. See the discography section. C Everyday Angel Questions - -------------------------- 1. What does EDA stand for? EDA stands for Everyday Angel. The term EDA comes from the song "I'm Sensitive," where Jewel sings "We are everyday angels / be careful with me 'cause I'd like to stay that way." "I'm Sensitive" can be found on Pieces of You. 2. How do I become an EDA? By joining the Jewel mailing list, you become an EDA. That's it! 3. Who is MrBB? MrBB (Alan Bershaw) is a sound recording engineer who works with many artists including Jewel. He is in contact with Jewel's management and used to provide the list with details about Jewel's albums, press appearances and other neat stuff. Information from him can be relied on to be as accurate as possible. MrBB produced the authorized angelfood, the Future Folklore Tape series and is also one of the forces behind the Living Room Tours (LRTs). Recently, MrBB "retired" from posting news info on the list, and is soon going to be doing the same on the official Jewel website. (once the revamped site is unveiled. Be nice to MrBB. 4. What's an angel name and how do I get one? You can choose your own angel name, and it can be anything you want. Just use some common sense. Stephanie (Lagu2001@hotmail.com) keeps track of the angel names, and the list is available from Mike's page. http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/angelnames.txt 5. Who keeps track of angel birthdays? Dan Perugini (Santee) (dperugin@medmail.mcg.edu) keeps track of angel birthdays and sends out a nice birthday greeting at the beginning of every month. Email him if you'd like to be added to the list. 6. What is angelfood and how do I get some? Angelfood refers to tapes made of Jewel performances that are traded *freely* by EDAs. Some of the more famous pieces of angelfood include "Rare Angels," "Radio Angels," "JewelStock" and "Innerchange Days." Much of the Angelfood is sanctioned by Jewel's management, as long as it is not distributed in digital format, with the exception of Digital Audiotape (DAT). Angelfood is not the same as bootlegs. Bootlegs are unauthorized copies of concert recordings that are sold. Many EDAs will offer to make copies of angelfood for you. If you don't have any, send a message to the list, and ask nicely. :-) 7. What do SJC & NJC mean? When people send messages to the Jewel list, they often put one of these in the subject to help other people identify the content of the message: SJC: Some Jewel Content NJC: No Jewel Content 8. What is the Angelfoodbank? The Angelfoodbank distributes angelfood via tape trees. They typically start with DAT originals, so when you get angelfood from the bank, you receive a low-generation, high quality cassette copy. They currently offer "Future Folklore 3," "Rare Angels," and "Radio Angels." http://www.angelfoodbank.org/ 9. What is the EDAF? The Everyday Angels Foundation promotes EDA and community volunteerism and organizes charitable activities to support worthy causes. More information is available from their web site. http://www.edaf.org/ 10. What is the EDA Help Center? The EDA Help Center (edacenter@hotmail.com) is a group of people who answer questions posed by EDAs. If you are afraid to ask a question (don't be), or it doesn't make it to the list, ask the EDA Help Center. 11. What is a Living Room Tour? Living Room Tour (LRT) gigs are shows hosted at EDA homes. They are primarily in living rooms, but occasionally are outdoors in yards as well. People congregate at someone's house, pay a small amount to the musicians, and experience live music in an intimate atmosphere. MrBB has written a detailed history of the Living Room Tour.
