My first experience with Jewel's music was with Spirit. I actually saw it next to the big display for Garth Brook's double live CD. I've heard of Jewel in the past so I decided to pick up a copy along with the copy of the GB CD. I got home and listend to Spirit and I fell totally in love with it. Her folk sound is the type of music I really really like!! I used to work for a folk rock band. Anyways, if it wasn't for her spirit album, I wouldn't have become a fan of Jewel. A few days after I got Pieces of you and her poetry book. I'm a fairly new fan so I'm still learning about her and stuff. I'm so amased at the vast amount of info avaible on the internet. I also think this list is pretty cool too. The people on it are nice and friendly. I"ve managed lists like this before and there's usually always people arugiing and being rude. Anyways, c ya all later, Mike =========================================== Quote: "I will gather myself around my faith, for Light does the darkness most fear." Sueing for stealing song bits is a very ambiguous area. I guess you cant really copyright chords but you can get sued for a total rip off- such as Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice and Under Pressure by Bowie and Queen. Or, the Rolling Stones recent Anybody Seen My Baby sounded a lot like k.d. Lang's Constant Craving. Most likely in Jewels case it was just a coincidence and an artist like Tom Petty wouldn't care- there are only so many chords possible, and over the years everybody borrows a bit from others- even legends like Bob Dylan. Secondly- I wanna join the crowd with my own little Spirit review - but I'm waiting because I'm having trouble getting into it. I know I'm probably in the tiny percentage that are not really that impressed by it but there aren't really that many songs that jump out right away like on POY. On POY I was in love instantly with WWSYS, Morning Song, Angel Standing By and Amen- but nothing really has struck me like that from Spirit- Ive had it about a week and I'm gonna give it a few more days and a few more listens before I post my review- lol- you can flame me then- believe me I'm trying hard to let it grow on me latr skatrs Lone Wolf ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Nov 1998 12:42:34 +0100 From: "Susanne Sommer" Subject: quotation/leno/have a little faith/spirit/ Hi EDAs!! The article in the Musikexpress Sounds is great and it`s good to see articles from her in Germany. Nice pictures. What I liked most was the description of her house. In the middle of one room is a easel and a mirror. On the paper Jewel made a portrait of herself. (Isn`t that nice! :-)) "Creativity is like a body with different pieces for me. Singing is one part, writing and acting another. I also drew but I`m better in singing and writing. I did this much more longer and it`s just my strongest muscle. But when I don`t put in my whole body I feel like I would give away possibilities and I am quickly bored." Well, I`m glad that Cris wants to translate it... I was lucky to see the repetition of Jay Leno and I absolutely loved Jewel`s performance. I was surpriced to see her without her guitar. She looked beautiful - and I liked her make-up - to those how thought it was too much. I don`t know who wanted to know that, but the song Have a little faith in me is written by John Hiatt not by Jewel. Did she cover anything else ?? I think I`m the last one who bought Spirit but at least I got it, too. I love it.You wrote so much about Spirit that I just want to say that I adore her voice. I don`t want to stop listening to it. My fav is Deep Water at the moment, but I don`t know the others that well, yet. I also like the little bird singing with her mother. It reminds me of the concert I went to, when her mother came on the stage and they sang together. Is there anyone who went to this concert in Frankfurt/Alte Oper ??? smile a lot Susi ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Nov 1998 23:21:05 +1000 From: Louise Subject: AUSSIE EDA'S PLEASE READ!!!! Re: Jewel on Ch 9's Today show. Hiya Angels, I'm in a TOTAL dilemma!!!! I was talking to my pal tonight on the phone and Jewel's ad (YAY she's got an ad for Spirit!!!) came on. Jewel still gleams By MIKE ROSS -- Edmonton Sun SPIRIT: Jewel This woman bugged me long before I ever heard her precious music. She was on some awards show bragging about how poor she was before she made it big, living in her car, eating Kraft Dinner and so on. Thanks to all the fans for buying the record, she said with a straight face, otherwise she would've had to steal to survive. Or get a real job .... Not a positive first impression - but that was then. This is now. The pouty, self-centred, impossibly sensitive poet has grown up a little bit on her sophomore album, Spirit. It's no Joni Mitchell, but it's a chronicle of maturity compared to Jewel's 10-million-selling debut album, Pieces Of You. Framed by lilting, languid grooves and acoustic guitar, Spirit contains its share of mawkish moments, enhanced by the breathy fragility of Jewel's vocal delivery. And when it comes to lyrics, the weightier the topic, the more she stumbles. Innocence Maintained attempts to make a Big Statement about brotherly love, but it comes off like high school poetry riddled with platitudes and simple-minded sentiments. In personal, more down-to-earth matters, however, Jewel's music rings with sincerity. It's soul-baring time in songs like Deep Water, Barcelona and Enter From the East. The ethereal melody of Kiss the Flame is a highlight, as is a minimal gem called Fat Boy. Overall, the pleasant sounds, compassion and unashamed honesty prevalent throughout Spirit are hard to hate. Trust me, I tried. It's clear that Jewel's heart is in the right place. Hopefully her head won't be far behind. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Nov 1998 11:57:12 -0600 From: "Michael Santos" Subject: Jewel WWW Message Board Hey ya all: I created a Jewel WWW Board the other day. So that's what Jewel was aiming for on this record... well I checked out the tracks (perfunctorally) on my friend's copy and I guess that's perfectly accurate. My only problem is that I HATE commercialism. There was one track on the record... it may have been Do You or it may have been the one preceding it... that I couldn't stand the sound of. Like, Hands kind of grew on me (although I do still see it as an icon of the way Jewel has grown away from many of the things I most loved about her music), but the production on whatever number I'm talking about now just made me sick. Deep Water rocked, though. That was a really nice sound. | Jesse Dangerously http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~ad309 | subterranean seraph 16 Trust Everyone | ad309@chebucto.ns.ca Ekam Sat, Viprah Bahudha Vadanti | ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Nov 1998 11:19:08 -0800 From: bpodeszw@stu.blanchet.k12.wa.us Subject: SPIRIT & POY Hey. I think I know the diffrence between Spirit and POY. In POY it was Jewel, her guitar, and a band she managed to borrow for some of the songs. It was also very expirimental and unsure. Spirit has Jewel, a backup vocalist, her mom, her guitar played by someone else in nearly every song, a cool band that adds zing, and an album with a defenate messege and plenty of meaning. I sorta miss the Jewel and her guitar gig, but I think the new album rocks. I love all the songs, but prefer the older versions of some of the songs like DEEP WATER, and INNOCENCE MAINTAINED. She had a lot more feeling and passion in them. Just my two cents, Jewel's Angel ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Nov 1998 13:23:16 -0500 From: "Keplinger, Jason M." Subject: My opinion on your opinion of Jewel Hello all you wonderfully bashing fans of Jewel. This is a plea bargain to try and stop the bashing of the best their is, the best their was, and the best their ever will be. She never wanted this. However you don't know that because your mind are clouded with her first album. Thinking that her follow up would be the same. For all of those that thought this way, your wrong. Most musicians will change in some little or big way. Cause you see 'nothing last for ever' - Axl Rose. She is still writing her songs from the heart which is what made all of her fans like the music that she makes in the first place. She has a captivating voice and sure I will admit that she has a body like no other, but I like her voice and music over the looks. So what if she starts wearing makeup and sort skirts, that doesn't reflect her music in anyway shape or form. So I beg of you to stop this madness and let her be herself. Remember she was only18 or 19 when she hit the music scene and now is 24. Me I am 21 and I can relate to her changes. I myself am still changing. So for all of those who stuck through all the shit that she is putting up with I congratulate you, and for those that are creating this shit, stop it. I have been her fan since the first time that I heard her gorgeous voice and will stay a fan for the music and not what she wears. So all that I am saying is that you are acting like animals and it has to stop. To see Jewel in concert is good enough for me, but to meet her in person is a dream come true. However I would in no way trample people just to get closer to her. Just remember that 'NOTHING ELSE MATTERS' - Metallica except the music!! So if I offended anyone well to bad. It had to be said and I said it as clean as I could. Don't forget that Guns N' Roses changed from Appetite for Destruction to G N R Lies to Use Your Illusion 1 & 2. Metallica changed from ....And Justice For All to the Self Titled to Load and Re-Load.
