Sort of a cool coincidence here.... someone posted to the list asking if the pics inside the Spirit CD book were Jewel's own hands and feet.... I had actually been wondering that myself the other day. I think there's a good chance that at least the hands might be hers, because if you look closely enough, you can see that the tips of her fingers are calloused, which is something that all guitar players get from playing so long (I should know, I have the same thing on my fingers!!). Plus the hands sort of look a bit feminine........ well anyways, I love the new album..... I fell asleep while listening to it for the first time, which is not a bad thing... it's just so peaceful and relaxing!!! I keep reading reviews and whatever-else and I'm pretty sure that everyone ive read for Spirit makes reference to POY going 8xPlatinum. Did POY or did it not sell like 10 million copies or more? Wouldnt that make POY 10xPlatinum? I thought an album was considered platinum after a million sales. I was wondering about something though. See there is a Wizard of Oz soundtrack from a TNT production with Jewel casted as Dorothy for around 17 bucks at the wherehouse. I have heard of the production before, but didn't know you could purchase the soundtrack, and now was wondering if anyone knows if there is away I can get the whole broadcast on Video Casette (there was one, right?) If anyone could help me with this, it would be GREATLY appreciated. A lot of the public seems to think "Pieces of You was just a one > hit wonder type thing; it really didn't matter; she didn't work for YES YES YES!!! the one thing that's been bothering me the most about "Spirit" is that people are now dissing POY and making out it wasn't the great album it was... I've been a record-buying music fan for over 15 years now (got my first album when I was only nine!!!) and in that time I can only recall three other albums (all from completely opposite ends of the musical spectrum) that moved me the way POY did - Michael Jackson's "Thriller" back in '83, Dire Straits' "Brothers In Arms" in '85 and Nirvana's "Nevermind" in '92... I mean, think back to the first time you heard POY... it was really something different - just a girl, her guitar and 14 incredible songs that sounded so good they didn't really *need* any production at all... all these really original-sounding chord progressions and melodies, inspirational lyrics and that absolutely incredible voice!!! wow!!! what more could anyone possibly want in an album... so now, in 1998 she releases "Spirit" and suddenly people are saying POY was a poor album full of weak songs and stuff which I know as well as most of you is total crap... sure, she may have stronger songs that remain unreleased, but POY, I believe, is and always will be a landmark album... "Spirit" is a nice album and all that but I don't feel it has that "wow, this is really something different" quality about it that POY had... if I had never heard POY or any Angelfood and "Spirit" was the only Jewel stuff I had ever heard I'm sure I would think it was a great album and I certainly wouldn't have regretted buying it, but it wouldn't have been enough to motivate me to join her mailing list and practically devote my whole life to her and her music the way POY did... so basically what I'm saying is: yes, "Spirit" is a great album, one which I am proud to finally have in my collection, but just remember that POY is still a fantastic album too and is probably what turned most of you into Jewel fans in the first place... :-) Kim Lees Your New Zealand Angel Standing By ICQ# 9270797 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Five years worth of kisses are packed in your bags In this tiny moment fits all the big things we never had And I can't quite pinpoint when it left or what for Love always steps lightly away from the door" Jewel Kilcher - "Studies In Love #12" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Nov 1998 10:22:15 -0500 From: Mike Schlosser Subject: The Hyper Anxiety Over Jewelstock2 Hello, {Before I begin all things stated in this post are opinions and they should be treated as such} I can understand all this excitement over jewelstock2 as I'm sure the first one was a magical event for both the fans and jewel. While I did not attend the first one, because of monetary issues. I have gotten thousands of hours of listening pleasure out of the tapes. I think 'asking' for a second jewelstock over and over again is excessively annoying, but above that I believe it is highly UNNECESSARY, allow me to quote a message from "The EDAs interview Jewel Project": >Q: >Jewel, >Is there any possibility of having another Jewelstock for the EDA's? >Adina Friedman > >Answer from Jewel: > >Yes, there is and we would have liked to have done it this year, but it >doesn't look like it will happen. But I want to do another Jewelstock! When & Where she chooses to do this is completely irrelevant, just have faith in the fact that she WILL... Let's do our best to try to make the second jewelstock as enjoyable as the first. If it's enjoyble to jewel, the chances of a THIRD are even greater... If it turns out I cannot go to this one ethier, I'm sure the tapes will provide me with much enjoyment..... {This post is the result of the petition idea, JewelStock isn't and never should be a demand} Feel free to send any responses... Wouldnt that make POY 10xPlatinum? - - From what I understand, (and I could be wrong here)......there are two sales figues for PoY. USA sales figures and international sales figures. I think it all means she's sold 8 million PoY's in the USA (not sure if this includes Canada) and 10 million including all the sales overseas. No one will get to meet Jewel because it'd be so crowded. We're no longer a support group, we're a fan club. An EDA told me that so many people join to get something out of the mailing list and that's true. A lot of people heard about Jewelstock and joined in hoping of being connected with Jewel. It's really a selfish way to think. Jewelstock is Jewel's gift to those who support her and we're demanding it of her just for taking the time to subscribe to a mailing list. No one will get to > meet Jewel because it'd be so crowded. Why do you think a lot of us are saying it should be in Europe then? Maybe even Australie or New Zealand? I don't know, but Jewel unbelievably does not have a very big fan base in these places and I think us Euro/Aussie-EDAs would truly appreciate Jewel taking the time out to thank us as well as the American guys she thanked at JS1, last year's Thanksgiving at Java Joe's, and the MTV thing on Tuesday. What I'm basically saying is that it would not be crowded over here or in Australia because there wouldn't be enough of us to make it crowded! >We're no longer a support group, we're a fan club. Again, this doesn't hold true for the EDAs who live in countries where Jewel is not so popular! I (And a few other Euro-EDAs I know) have practically forced friends to sit down and listen to Jewel's CDs and have ended up making people love Jewel almost as much as I do!!! A German EDA I know went to every single Jewel concert in Germany last year! This is being a fan of Jewel's, but it is also supporting her, and so is having a JS2 here - it'd give Jewel a lot of publicity in Europe if we go about it the right way, and could make her as popular here as she is in the USA All I want to say is that I haven't had the privalige of seeing Jewel live yet, and to have my first moment seeing Jewel with the best Jewel fans, and the members of the best mailing list in the world, would make it all the more special for me! Please just think about it from other people's point of view (not just your's at what you *think* is Jewel's POV) before you reply to this =) Cheers Tom tom.hall@megabit.net www.angelfire.com/pa/universe19/ ******************************************** "Boop Boop-Be-Do Yeah" - Jewel, Down So Long ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #647 ***************************
