Several of them have Real Audio links with which you can listen to the station's programming, including Loveline on the internet. Internet simulcasts (netcasts) with common modems and dial-up connections don't have the sound quality you are used to from FM radio, but it's listenable especially for voice programming, like will be the case tonight when Jewel talks and takes questions over the air. You might first want to check the list to see if there is a station within broadcast range that you can listen to, of course. The stations affiliate list link is as follows: http://www.adamanddrew.com/stat.htm While some stations that simulcast on the internet (netcast) blackout syndicated programming that they don't have the rights to netcast, apparently this needn't be the case with Loveline. Some stations on the Loveline affiliates' list say they have a Real Audio link. So, I suppose you'll be able to listen to Loveline on those links. Other stations on the Loveline affiliates list may netcast Loveline as well, check out their websites if you want to find out. Also, the affiliates list is not complete, I know our local station here carrys it but the station isn't listed as an affiliate, so you may want to call around to alternative stations in your community before you try to listen to the program on the net. To listen to a netcast you need a dial-up link or direct connection to the internet. I don't think you can do it dialing up through some of the free email-based providers like Juno. You also need an audio player, like RealAudio or Windows Media Player (some netcasting servers can use or require the new version of Windows Media Player). I checked the links and while a couple seem to be dead or changed, and I didn't try to get a updated address using a search engine. At least one link as having a Real Audio link was valid. The link to KNRK (Portland, OR) worked, and when I clicked on the KNRK web page link to broadcast.com, their netcasting server, it took me to the following web page: http://www.broadcast.com/radio/Alternative/KNRK/ When you view the above broadcast.com page you'll see a black and yellow "broadcast.com / LISTEN" button near the top of the page. At least as of this morning this was a valid (working) link to KNRK's live audio stream. However, if you click just below that button where it says "Real Audio" it will take you to the Real Audio's website where you can download or get troubleshooting info for Real Audio. This is OK if you need that program or info, but it can be frustrating if you don't. If that happens you may want to take a few deep breaths. Most netcast audio streams run at 16 to 20k so if you have at least a 28.8k modem you "ought" to be able to connect. Sometimes there are delays and such in the network between you and the server which make listening difficult. You might want to check out different links to an affiliate's live audio stream especially if you live out of the USA, since delays and errors may be more likely when trying to listen to a link at that great of a distance. Dropouts are common (it sounds like a crash of static) even on good quality links, and timeouts where the net link is interrupted for 15-30 seconds and the netcasting server drops your streaming audio connection completely (you should get an error dialog box) happens sometimes. If you timeout you can click on the "broadcast.com / LISTEN" button again or click on the play button on your audio player. Some streaming media links require high bandwidth connections, but most (so- called) "FM quality" audio links are good for 28.8k connections, so if you timeout it is likely a internet problem, the streaming audio links themselves you find should be valid. Please consider checking out several links from the Loveline affiliates list and bookmark more than one that works for you well before the program starts. That way you will have alternatives in case one drops out on you and you can't restart it. The Loveline affiliates list says Loveline airs Monday-Thursday and Sunday from 10:00pm-12:00am. That's Pacific time, of course, and the KNRK page said that the program begins on their station at 10 PM. Perhaps some other affiliates will tape-delay the broadcast, call them if you want that info. There is a "Contact Loveline" page on the Loveline website which gives a call-in phone number for the show, 1-800-LOVE-191. Of course you could call that if you had a question even if you can't listen to the show at all. If you have problems downloading or setting up Real Audio or Windows Media Player drop me an email. I'll check our email again when I get home at 6 PM Eastern, and again about 10 PM Eastern. the nondirective angel, Nina ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Nov 1998 09:34:18 -0800 (PST) From: BenFrancis@webtv.net (Ben Simpelo) Subject: San Diego EDAs please read! I finally got through all the skirt email, and was able to post the results to the poll I started a week or so ago. First off I'd like to thank the 17 out of 7,000 (or something like that) that voted. Secondly, here are the results. A- 0 anti-Jewel reviews should not be posted (nobody is too sensative on this list are they?) B- 8 people think they should be posted with a forewarning. Someboody said that it can ruin your mood even more when you're mad. I agree. It would make it the most fair to the people with a nice forewarning so the touchy ones could not read, and the ones who could take it would. C- 9 should be posted along with everything else. I a good argument I got for it was it would be censorship to do otherwise. Others think we can take it "cause we're big boys and girls" It was a funny poll to do, but at least I know what others think now. THANKS AGAIN TO THOSE WHO VOTED!!! The reason I called Jewel JEWELY BRAVO is because in the Brady Bunch the industry changed Greg Brady's name to Johnny Bravo because it sounded cooler. Any how, I listened to the Spirit CD once again and I guess it's not all that bad. The deep drum beat in Innocents Maintained does give it a powerful feeling. It is the same old Jewel under all those layerings of music with the same messages. She is the same person in interview too. A lot of the songs on Spirit are old ones, just slowed down with different instruments accompanying her. So I guess it's growing on me. I like it. Not as much as if it were just her and her guitar or at least less background accompanyment. But I still hate that keyboard! EEEEk! C-Ya folks around. Michael Carmona P.S. I am still looking for these and can offer full performances of Jewel on tape or video in return: Video: Parady from Conan O Brien (The Year 2000) Jewel skit on Conan O Brien (Before Plastic Surgery) Saturday March 30th, 1996, Alaska Concert Short interview SEGMENT REGARDING JEWELS VAN FROM VH1 vh1 hamburg, germany video Jewel in the dutch tv show called Laat de Leeuw San Diego area local news broadcasts with videotape of anything about the "Mom's Awards" March Of Dimes Fundraising Dinner. Loudermilk Sung to Jewel Kilcher by her mother Lenedra as a child There's a little bird somebody sent Down to the Earth to live on the wind Blowing on the wind And she sleeps on the wind This little bird somebody sent. Light and fragile and feathered sky blue Thin and graceful, the sun shining through She flies so high up in the sky Way out of reach of human eyes. Light and fragile and feathered sky blue Thin and graceful, the sun shining through She flies so high up in the sky Way out of reach of human eyes. But then I thought of it another way. to quote a line from the movie 'Braveheart', "everything man [or in this case bird] dies, not every man [bird] really lives." ;op If you want to look at it metaphorically, the bird "flied so high until it died", meaning it never let anything get it down it's whole life, which is what we should do. of course, maybe I'm just reading way too much into it. ;op Boop boop be doop, yeah!!! Okay, this is my first post, so be gentle with me and don't take offence if this comes out wrong... As far as I know, the word is unbeliever, but that may just be an English thing (yes, I'm from England) Other stuff... I bought spirit yesterday, and I suppose I have a slightly different view to most of you guys, 'cause I've only ever heard POY, and none of the live tapes... IMHO Spirit is a real progression, and a much better album than POY, which as Jewel said is immature in places (okay, I'm paraphrasing)... Spirit is much more consistent, and songs like hands and Deep Water are incredible... While I think of it, where can I get copies of these live tapes you all talk about? Are there any EDAs in England who can help (I'm a recent convert) Okay, now for the blasphemous bit, and I have a nasty feeling I'm gonna get roasted for this, but hey... I can't help thinking that some people seem to take Jewel far too seriously... who cares what she wears/looks like/had for breakfast? AmI the only one that likes her for her music? To be brutal, I'm not sure that it matters to me what she does with her life outside of that - I'm a fan, not her father, and I don't feel like I have the right to criticise her or thry to run her life. I don't agree with everything she says in her interviews or lyrics, but i just think to myself "well, it's her life" any listen to the bits I do like. Calm down a little, 'cause no matter how much it moves you, or you feel she's defined your life or whatever, when it gets down to it it's only music. @}->-;-- Duncan ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #642 ***************************
