Jewel looked radiant and elegant. The whole vibe, with the muted dark colors and candles with her simple black dress was totally kewl. And the song was, of course, great as usual. It was miked well, with the mike following her on the highs and lows, unlike Jewel TV, where sometimes it seemed like she peetered out. The dancing was there, but not as extreme as SNL. And, my favorite, the patented "Jewel Glance", where she looks right into the camera and gives that look of sincerity and hope, was all over the place. The interview was pretty good afterwords, too. She was her charming self, even when Leno asked the same standard, boring questions. It was interesting that he focused more on "To Live On" rather than "Spirit," but whatever. It seems that, for the Spirit media gauntlet, "So you're into rodeo?" is going to be like "So you lived in a van?" was for POY. Overall, it was great! There's been a lot of EDA's talking about, "Jewel's getting too commercial. Where's that innocent teenager who played in coffeehouses? What's all this posing and dancing and stuff?" LOOK at this performance. A perfect blend of the mandatory pop star stuff and the geniune, true, optimistic, clever, sometimes clumsy Jewel we all fell in love with. She's still there. She's still there. - -Amias The Romantic Angel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Nov 1998 00:41:13 -0600 From: sesykes@juno.com (Scott S.) Subject: Re: Oh my, you all are so scary <> When i think of Jewel, i think gorgeous voice, beautiful smile, and an awesome body! She is very attractive! I totally agree with you but one thing is hard to for Jewel. Once she entered the mainstream music society she became a celebrity! She is now put on a pedestal that she can never get down from! The one thing that celebrities want is to become normal! Method Man called into MTV today and talked with Whitney Houston about her new album. One of the things he said is that the public doesn't realize "we" are normal too. "I just got out of the bathroom, i'm a little sick!" I think if we as fans and the public start to consider these "celebs" as normal then maybe we can judge them as one of us! I really think that we think of them as higher than us subconsciously! We realize that they're in this little box and were not! I think that made since! ** Scott S.** -Big Sexy Angel "WHAT'S THE ONE FEELING ABOVE ANY OTHER? LOVE, TRY IT!" Hi all, Today I went to a bookstore to check out some German music magazines in the hope to maybe find a little blurb somewhere about the release of Spirit. Well, after a few minutes of the expected fruitless search, I was basically struck by lightning.... "Musikexpress Sounds" one of the larger publications here, has Jewel ON THE COVER along with a five page article and a very, very positive review of Spirit. The article is titled "Blonde And Brilliant". It's a very nice one indeed, though it contains no new information for an EDA of course... I may translate it to post it here, but give me time, it's a loooong one... The best thing however is the review of Spirit. They review 100 new CDs each month and this month Spirit is THE ONLY ALBUM that received six stars, which is their best rating.... German EDAs may want to go and buy it themselves, so again: It's the December issue of "Musikexpress Sounds"- Jewel on the cover, you can't miss it.... Cheers ! Subject: re:Tonight Show Jewel (disagree) Actually, I have to disagree somewhat with Amias. I did think the set was well-done, very colorful, for a studio stage. And Jewel looked elegant, although I'm not sure what to say about her eye make-up...um, different. What I also noticed, was that she seemed to be just going through the motions...not really getting into her performance like she did on SNL. Each time I've seen her perform Hands live, she gets decreasingly less into the overall performance aspect. Not to say I can't blame her, with doing 4 live performances in 5 days, playing the same song, that can get to be repetitious. On SNL she seemed genuine, on the Tonight Show, she didn't. Yes, she had her looks, etc., and it was an ok performance, but the emotion, TO ME, just wasn't there. Not much arm movement, uncharacteristic for her, she looked rather stiff actually. Maybe she was tired? Who knows. Could be the reason for the heavy eye make-up..covering up those shadows for not getting enough sleep. I'm sure by next weeks Letterman performance we'll all see a much revived Jewel, and most likely a much more powerful performance...at least I hope so. But, again, the set was very nice. And she looked elegant. Hey, I'm repeating myself like Jewel now...ha ha. Well, today is exactly one week after I got Spirit =) More on that later, but I want to tell all of you who talk about how the people in the beginning of the EDA list went around telling people to liten to Jewel and making people like Jewel. Well that stuff isn't over yet!!! I am here in Germany spreading the Jewel-ness to all the other British people who live here (I live on a British Forces base). I have so far made 6 people buy POY, 2 people buy Spirit (in only 1 week!) and 3 people have bought both POY and Spirit, making it a whole 11 people who have bought Jewel's albums as a direct result of me! If it hadn't been for me, they wouldn't have even heard of her!!! Anyway, I am buying all of my friends who have said 'Jewel is OK' to me a copy of Spirit for Christmas, so that should boost record sales in HMV Direct =) Another thing - as you know, I live in Germany, so obviously I didn't get to see either SNL or The MTV thingy. If anyone who has one, or preferably both, of these, then please please e-mail me cuz I'd love a copy!!! I'll pay in Dollars or maybe trade with some Jewel imports or some of my own angelfood! come on guys =) Hehe Now for my 2nd review of Spirit, and my opinions of it a week later. You'll find that they are a little different!! 1. Deep Water - A lovely track!!! It has definately grown on me and I don't think that any version could be better!!! 10/10 (last week - 8/10) 2. What's Simple Is True - This one has also grown on me but not as much! It is still a beautiful song though. 9/10 (last week - 8/10) 3. Hands - I still love this track, but some of the tracks on the album are much better in comparison. The only one that I don't like as much after a few listens. 9/10 (last week 10/10) 4. Kiss The Flame - See last weeks review. My opinion hasn't changed at all =) 8/10 5. Down So Long - Still one of the favorites!!! It's coooool! 10/10, as it was last week. 6. Innocence Maintained - It's not as good as some of the album tracks but, like Kiss The Flame, is a nice little "filler". Same as last week - 8/10 7. Jupiter - Beautiful, just lovely! Can't think of any words to express it any better! 10/10 (last week 9/10) 8. Fat Boy - I really anted this to be my favorite song on the Spirit album, but after listening to the rest of it, I'm beginning to like the produced sound more than the acoustic one! Oh well, this still stays the same (just) with a 10/10, but it's not my favorite unfortunately =0( 9. Enter From The East - This one's lovely, but like I said before, the accoustic sound is lacking something. This is the same as last week with a 9/10 10. Barcelona - Ya!! Love this one! Let me flyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! LoL 10/10 11. Life Uncommon - Now my all-time favorite song by Jewel (along with Satellite and Absence of Fear). Wow! I love this more every single time I hear it! A beautiful song! 100/10 (last week 10/10 - up by 90!) 12. Do You - cool! I love this one now, and last week I only gave it a 7! LoL! This song rules now!!! 10/10 13. Absence Of Fear - what can I say? The first time I heard it I cried, and who's to say I won't cry again when I hear it next? I am in love with this song =) 101/10 14. This Little Bird - this one's still cute. But why does he have to die??? Awwwwww. 8/10 (7 last week) Well there you go. Hope you liked looking at how my opinions changed =) See you guys soon!
