I think Spirit is a definete step up from POY, obviously, but still not what she's fully capalbe of. For everyone who hasn't heard angelfood, yeah, it's a giant leap. In Beatles terms, POY was "Meet the Beatles" and Spirit is somewhere around "A Hard Day's Night." Her "Sgt. Pepper" still looms. The album as a whole is strong. As an earlier EDA review said, the album's theme seems to be "let's make everything slower." I would have loved to see a "Sometimes it be that Way" or even a "Little Sister." Also, I would have liked to see a really LOUD song, along the lines of "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone" or "Carnivor." But all the songs are great. It took a bit longer for "Jupiter" and "Barcelona" to grow on me, but they are. 4 1/2 stars out of 5. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Nov 1998 18:44:41 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: Re: Strange.... It sure ain't no lack of creativilty :-) Not when you consider she's performed over 400 of her own songs in concerts/appearances and has well over 600 she's written in her audio archives :-) I know I couldn't write that many songs and not have at least some lines repeated in a few songs. Anyways, I want to be ablt to use real pictures of her. So, I am asking for real pictures of Jewel. From anywhere. I will trade angelfood or whatever for it. Please let me know if you can help me out. Thanks. BTW, these pictures will be used for my use ONLY. There are 5 songs in Spirit where she says something about >flame. You know Kiss the flame and fragile flame and so on and so forth. >Anyone got anything to say about this??? Just wondering. i think i've got a good explanation. (or at least a hypothesis...) it seems to me a lot of artists, (and people in general), have certain "buzz words" that they like to use, whether consciously or subconciously. authors have their own styles and like to write certain ways, like the way they tend to describe things, like details and so forth. lots of guitarists have distinct musical styles, too. it's not hard too tell a jimmy page riff, or a keith richards lick, and i can always pick out a riff from john squire (of the Stone Roses/Seahorses). i think, lyrically, that songwriters tend to follow patterns , too. any of you that are Belly fans might know that tanya d loves to use the words "dress", "star", and even "moon", as well as a few others. the more you hear of an artist, the more you tend to notice those patterns. jewel is no exception. (not counting her voice...) even in her poetry you can see the patterns. check out the tiny lights tour book, as there are a lot of similar themes (and that means words) that permeate those poems. why should her songs be any different. in fact, i think she probably changed the title of "fragile flame" to "fat boy" just for that reason. i could be wrong, but why else? that's what i'd do. (she checks with me, ya know ;) anyway, i let you know what i think. let's hear what you think.... always crazy, chris :) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Nov 1998 20:11:04 -0500 (EST) From: James McGarry Subject: Bathrooms was Re: Kilcherstore/Hands On Thu, 19 Nov 1998, Charlie Watkins wrote: > Jewel has said something to the effect that restrooms/bathroom are the > only sanctuary left in our society, the last place were we can be > alone with our thoughts. Long (Jewels EDA)" Subject: my thoughts on the album Hey everyone, Just thought i would put in my 2 cents on the album. I remember lots of speculation about "Spirit not being able to live up to Pieces of You". that statement couldnt be further from the truth in my mind. It is a GREAT album and a perfect follow up to PoY. I too was happy to see lots of the songs that were going to be on spirt as i had heard 9 of the 14 songs before the release of the album. that is only because I have been an EDA for so long. Anyway I love the theme to the album as it does fit my life at the moment, and to answer a dispute about wheather her album is "themed" or if it was just "lack of origonality", i personally think it was themed just as i feel PoY was. The only thing I was disapointed to hear on the album was Fat Boy, which personally i liked better as "Fragile Flame" :) I guess it just seemed to sound a little flat to me, maybe that is beacause i am so used to hearing the Live versions of it. Oh well i just love the album, and the only thing that i regret right now is not having enough money at the moment to get that Limited Edition Print. And the price could only go up considering what a huge hit this album is going to be. Ok well there is my 2 cents. thanks for listening. JEWEL Spirit (Atlantic/Warner) CHER Believe (WEA/Warner) Jewel is pictured 10 times in the CD artwork of Spirit, including tasteful shots of her hands (clean) and feet (greasy). She has inherited Madonna's producer Patrick Leonard, who gussies up her style until the petite Alaskan folkie sounds one-part Sarah McLachlan and two-parts Judy Collins. There's nothing as unnerving as her crooning "Jew, Jew..." on the anti-racism title track of her debut Pieces of You, though overweight teenagers who are nervous at public pools will be happy to know that they have her sympathy in "Fat Boy." If she's right that "What's Simple Is True," then Jewel is the most virtuous woman since Joan of Arc. Cher is pictured nine times, but five of those are the same picture on the same page. After discovering on It's a Man's World in '96 that she can't have hits without the help of cheeseball songwriting matron Diane Warren, Cher snags Warren's snappy and quite glorious "Takin' Back My Heart" and brings Todd Terry in for a dance-happy but listless remake of her 10-year-old hit "We All Sleep Alone." Though evidently inspired by Madonna's Ray of Light, Believe has few, if any, references to Indian spirituality, unless the "Monsay" mentioned in "Love Is the Groove" is near New Delhi. The album is, however, about a kajillion times more entertaining than Spirit, though Ang Lee might make Jewel a better actress than Mike Nichols made Cher. -- JA ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Nov 1998 20:56:35 EST From: Hotbod2472@aol.com Subject: request for Jewel/SNL tape Hi everyone~ In my haste to get through all my mail and hitting the delete button to hastily I'm once again asking if someone can make a copy of SNL for me---I'd greatly appreciate it and promise to not use the delete button so quickly next time. thanks in advance Theresa In the end only kindness matters~JK~ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Nov 1998 17:50:37 -0800 From: "Cody Rush" Subject: Chime Bells are ringing.... I think i joined a month or two ago and i've heard all the rants and raves from everyone and have just been ignoring the negative mails because i know there's always differing opinions. I believe that for the main part, since everyone is here for the same reason: to show (and share) our support for Jewel- even if we have off days and send negative mail, it doesn't mean that the whole list is falling apart. I think the majority of angels on the list are still willing to welcome new members with open arms.. They just speak quietly and don't yell. - --anyway, just my own personal thoughts.. Through this list I've made a lot of new friends (Jesse, Matt, Bruce) and became slightly happier about who I am (Troy, that was your credit). I am a Jewel fan because her songs inspired me and touched me deeply. I was in a clinical depression last year, partly because of past events in my life, partly because I had a poor self image/self confidence. I thought I was a horrible person. Jewel's music (with the help of a freind) made me think "I am not horrible. I am simply human, and dammit I don't deserve to be walked all over!" (remembering that we are all human is probably why I stayed on the list through the time when the list went unmoderated.) This letter is mainly to say a HUGE thanks to Mike and Mr.BB for keeping everything in line, Jewel for being so damn honest, and to all the angels for being almost like a built-in support group. (sorry if I bored any of yall) Love hugz and lollipops to all Courtney the hyper angel "Never give up on the good times, gotta believe in the love you find." ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #638 ***************************
