(By the way, the "ecto" list is a wonderful resource for sharing info and experiences about female (mostly) singer/songwriters. It's hosted by Jeff W's smoe, our own gracious host.) ********************************************************************** Jewel, Living Up to Earlier Appraisals Singer's Girlish Soprano Soars on Second Album By Mike Joyce Special to The Washington Post Wednesday, November 18, 1998; Page D07 There's no need to read between the lines to understand the mission Jewel has undertaken on her new release, "Spirit" (Atlantic). The 24-year-old singer-songwriter all but spells it out in the opening verse of "Hands," the album's first single: "If I could tell the world just one thing/ It would be that we're all OK / And not to worry 'cause worry is wasteful/ And useless in times like these." Jewel finds comfort in the power of positive thinking (and singing), in the realization that "in the end only kindness matters," and in pursuit of "a life uncommon," free of fear and prejudice. As she makes clear in "Innocence Maintained," she refuses to let cynicism and despair rule her heart: "We've made houses for hatred/ It's time we made a place/ Where people's souls may be seen and made safe/ Be careful with each other/ These fragile flames/ For innocence can't be lost/ It just needs to be maintained." The words of a hopeless romantic? No doubt. But not an empty-headed one. On these and other songs, Jewel comes across as someone who's intent on insulating herself from anything that will erode her spirit and will. She's determined not to make the same mistake twice and to resist complacency. Nowhere is that more evident than on "Deep Water," which concerns a character whose "standard of living got stuck on survive." Sounding more understanding than judgmental, Jewel offers a little advice: "We've compromised our pride/ And sacrificed our health/ We have to demand more/ Not of each other/ But more from ourselves." In keeping with the intimate tone of her 1995 debut, the multi-platinum smash "Pieces of You," Jewel's new album boasts a simple if somewhat more sophisticated production that flatters her girlish soprano and subtly emphasizes her folk music orientation. She continues to develop as a lyricist, gracefully contrasting inspirational themes with whimsical refrains, and occasionally painting little vignettes of contemporary life. Among the latter is "Do You," which easily ranks among Jewel's best songs, though here the subject concerns illusions maintained, and the scenario unfolds like a conversation overheard in a bar: "You say you like the way the cowboys tip their hats and say/ 'How's it goin' ma'am?'/ But you're never quite clear if their glares are sincere/ Or really just second hand / To you it's all roses, it's a lavender haze/ The man is a marvel, but it's a shame about his brains/ But that's OK/ You say, 'He's got straight teeth and it's good sex.' I was writing to let all the EDA's in on an idea I had recently, which I proposed to several Tori Amos lists. I want to start a tape tree for the Plugged '98 shows. I do need people to serve as seeds to distribute tapes to people who want them, and I need shows to distribute. If you have any shows and/ or would be willing to serve as a seed *please* email me. PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL ME RIGHT NOW IF YOU WANT COPIES OF TAPES, I WILL LET YOU KNOW WHEN TO DO THAT! If you are willing, please just fill out the below section and snap this right back to me and I'll be in touch. I'm thinking we'll do it 5 or so shows at a time with at least one seed in each region so we don't get too booged down juggling requests. So the seeds ask what they get for this...they get hopefully the best quality copies before the rest of the people do! Thank you! I hope this can get off the ground soon! Your name: Your location: SHOWS Date Location Format Quality Date Location Format Quality Date Location Format Quality etc. *for format, please indicate whether the show is analog (regular cassette), CD-R, minidisc, DAT, VHS, etc. SETLISTS(not required but are helpful if possible) 1. 2. 3. etc. YES OR NO: I would be willing to serve as a seed to copy shows for others. That's all! Thanks very much and I look forward to working with you all to share Tori's recent magic with those who don't have it. But I feel bad because she doesn't want to be known as "The beautiful sexy woman all guys love because of her breasts" but she wants to be known as the 'Great and Powerful Jewel!'-kidding, she wants to be known as a simple girl with a huge talent. She's my inspiration because of her personality, not because she's a beautiful woman or because I love her clothes. True, she is a beautiful woman, inside and out, and true most of the time I like her style, but that's not why I look up to her, that's not why she's my biggest inspiration, that's not why I bought her CDs and books and so forth, but because I lover her for her personality and her voice and her lyrics and all the passion she puts into her writing. And sorry if this sounds rude, but I got a little mad when the person below (Mandy) just joined the list and she's judging this already, give us and Jewel a break! We don't deserve it. And I don't know who said that Jewel was a slut, but obviously it's so not true! And besides she has a right to wear what she wants to wear, not like that's any of our bussiness anyway. Simply successful Jewel's `Spirit' lacks soul as she croons lyrics without substance BY JIM FARBER New York Daily News UNLIKE most artists, Jewel doesn't mind announcing the message behind her music. ``If I could tell the world just one thing,'' she coos at the start of her new album, ``Spirit'' (Atlantic, in stores this week) ``it would be that we're all OK.'' That's just one of the encouraging things she can't wait to tell the world. In the first few tracks alone, Jewel proclaims that ``the more you live, the more you know,'' ``it's only kindness that matters'' and ``what's simple is true.'' She had better hope so. You certainly won't find anything tricky or challenging on the singer's second album. Not that this should cause her any commercial concern. Jewel sold more than 8 million copies of her debut LP, ``Pieces of You,'' by delivering gooey truths in a fluttery voice over tinkling acoustic chords. Such pink homilies cast Jewel as the Melanie of her generation, as the chief naif of the '90s. On ``Pieces of You,'' she acted as though she were the first person ever to realize that too much TV can be bad for you, that it's wrong to beat up gay people, that people often hate us for what they dislike in themselves, and that it's better to have a hug than a beer. For the most popular poet of 1998 (a collection lodged itself on the New York Times bestseller list this summer), timing played a key part in her commercial ascent. She came crooning along just as grunge began to gag on its own self-loathing. Suddenly, pop was ruled by a host of school-girl fantasies come to life, from the Spice Girls' teenybop dreams to Lilith Fair's Girl Scout notion of female power. By those standards, it's no wonder Jewel arose as this generation's poet laureate. Her precious music completed the picture. Most of the songs featured minimal instrumentation, though her record company later had her rerecord key tracks to beef them up for radio play. Jewel hasn't made her songs much more elaborate for the new work. Though it's produced by Madonna's frequent collaborator Patrick Leonard, he buffed the pop sheen only slightly. He did encourage a few catchier tunes, such as the gospel-inflected ``Life Uncommon'' and the pretty ``Hands.'' But there's no great expansion in the arrangements. The spindly instrumentation leaves plenty of room for Jewel's voice, which remains as flexible as a gymnast's body. She can leap octaves like a young Joni Mitchell, though she lacks her character, innovation, mystery or sadness. Jewel's voice has the soulless beauty of a department store mannequin. Lyrically, she also stays close to the surface. Not only does she suffer from a ceaseless need to dispense fortune-cookie wisdom, but she also seems immune to humor or irony. And she can display a tin ear for language. In one song, she compares her heart to ``grape gum on the ground.'' In another, she puzzlingly sings, ``I am needing you here/inside the absence of fear.'' If Jewel can't be defended as a poet, she still may have value as a kind of motivational speaker for the truly young. She even toyed with the notion of making this album an ``inspirational'' work for the holidays. In a sense, that's what she ended up with -- a musical version of a store-bought holiday greeting card. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Nov 1998 18:01:48 EST From: STAC5984@aol.com Subject: Rosie I just watched the Rosie interview. I made a post that I wrote yesterday about welcoming new EDA's and not giving them the cold shoulder. My post also included many ideas, thoughts, and questions, abou ourseles, Jewel, and the list. I have received many responses replying to the post that I wrote. I am happy that many EDA's wrote back to me, giving me their comments on my post. Many people had mixed feelings about what I wrote and I am happy for everyone who gave me their opinion. Some EDA's felt the spirit was gone because MrBB was not going to post us information like he used to.....one person made the comment to me that he (MrMM0 had "left us". I think that MrBB did not leave us--he is still an EDA. Many EDA's gave credit for his dedicated and continous time that he put into the list, and I think that is great. But, I know that some EDA's feel that he has abandoned us which is not true. He is still on the list and I have read some posts from him. I think that MrBB wants to enjoy being an EDA and relax. Maybe he couldn't enjoy being on the list as much as some EDA's because of the continous work load that he did for this list. I am sure giving us information was enjoyable for him but maybe he would like to see what it is like to be a "relaxed" EDA. Besides, he will still be working on the Jewel site for us to enjoy which will call for a lot of time, anyway. I am positive not just anyone could take on the role that MrBB has and still does lead. I think everyone who has not thanked him for his dedication should. I wonder where the list and the Everyday Angels would be without his and everyone's hardwork. Therefore, I do not feel the spirit has gone. Thank you so much MrBB for all of your effort that you put into this list. You gave us information when we needed it and didn't even need a thank-you. Thank you EVERYONE, Rachel ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #637 ***************************
