No longer a Jewel in the rough Pieces Of You brought singer fame, wealth and a sense of perspective By JANE STEVENSON -- Toronto Sun The phone rings, I quickly identify myself and -- surprise, surprise -- it's a much-in-demand pop star calling 20 minutes early for a scheduled interview. "Jewel Kilcher," blurts out a female voice down the line from New York in response to my caffeine-fuelled greeting. "You're early," I say. "Just let me rewind my tape. I'm listening to Marilyn Manson." Jewel, the multi-platinum-selling pop-folk vixen from Alaska, chuckles: "Well, you know, we're basically the same artist." So the 24-year-old singer-songwriter, who released her much-anticipated sophomore album, Spirit, this week, has a sense of humour. Given the incredibly earnest Jewel tale thus far, it's a little surprising. The now familiar story, which she often recited at her concerts, is one of a young girl raised by folk-singing parents in a log cabin in Homer. Jewel wound up living in her car and waitressing until enormous fame and fortune came her way following her 1995 debut, Pieces Of You, which contained songs she wrote when she was a teenager. "Student artwork should never be critiqued with the big guys, you know," says Jewel. "I didn't take my first record too seriously. I don't take anything I do overly seriously and to see the people taking it seriously was kind of amusing to me, because all you do with student art is you say, 'Hmm, they have potential if they keep going.' And that's how I always think of myself. I don't think of myself as, like, having arrived yet at all." Maybe not, but Pieces Of You was the album that just wouldn't quit. Because of tour commitments, the release of a second album was postponed for so long that it was eventually scrapped. "The record is not me now," she says. "And so I had to go in and make a whole new record that was who I am now. Some of the songs are on Spirit but not the same versions." Pieces, in case you forgot, eventually sold over 10 million copies and garnered Jewel a best new artist Grammy nomination and the cover of Time. Now the music indutry is lumping Jewel's Spirit in with Alanis Morissette's recently-released Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie as the two sophomore albums to watch. "To me selling too many records was a freakish side effect of doing what I do, and it won't always be like that and that's fine," says Jewel. "I don't think that's the goal either. The goal is to try and keep your music alive and to keep doing good art." Spirit wound up being produced by frequent Madonna collaborator Patrick Leonard, who Jewel thought could make it "commercial and really poetic at the same time." (Canadian producer Daniel Lanois was also in the running.) Meanwhile, the attention that came with the success of Pieces, which required "a huge adjustment" on Jewel's part, is addressed in some of the new songs. So far, she says she's bought a new home with her songwriting royalites but still has the same "beat up Volvo with limp antenna." In addition, Jewel has become something of a one-woman multi-media show. She will make her movie debut next spring as an 18-year-old bride in Ang Lee's Civil War drama Ride With The Devil and this summer published a poetry collection called A Night Without Armor. This is where her ability to laugh at herself comes in handy. An NYU graduate has already parodied Jewel's poetry with a collection called A Night Without Armor II: The Revenge. "I think it's funny," says Jewel. "I'm not too precious." Still to come is a still-untitled book of short stories in July, and maybe even more avant-garde forms of expression when Jewel's year-long Spirit tour comes to North America next summer. "I wouldn't mind moving into performance art," she says. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Nov 1998 10:23:24 -0500 From: "Keplinger, Jason M." Subject: Why I love Jewel Hi everyone, I love Jewel for her voice and only that. However her perfect body does help. Anyway I just want to let you all know that I have two sites dedicated to Jewel. First http://www.geocities.com/sunsetstrip/frontrow/7026 It is mostly pics and lyrics to Pieces Of You. Second http://members.tripod.com/jewellover69 It will have pics and more, but is still under construction. However there is a index page to see for now. Thank you to all of those who visit either site. Also please email ME and tell me what you think of them. Ok, this may just be my cynicism(or whatever) breaking through, but I feel the need to state it. I've noticed several times over the past year and some months that I've been on this list people(EDAs, gents, ladies, whatever term you wish to use) judging jewel by her appearance at a certain event. What does it matter what she is wearing, or how much make up she has on, or if she makes her hair up in such and such a fashion? She's still going to sing the song, read the poem, or be her normal sweet self either way. Her hair style, clothing, or makeup isn't going to change her behavior, performance, or personality. To tell you the honest to God truth, I didn't so much watch the Saturday night Live episode as listen to it. I glanced over at it, and I did make a note of her clothing, but it's not something to make a big deal about. She sang Hands Very Beautifully, and I have been a fan of "Been Down So Long" since I heard it on a tape oh so long ago. Anyhow, please try to think about this :) Take care of yourselves and Have yourselves an Excellent Day! :o) Seth D. Remember what Jewel says at the bottom of the cover for "Pieces of You"? "What we call human nature is in reality just human habit." She's right. Jewel's music is about *not* trampling on other people. I almost wish her voice were less beautiful, so that people would just listen to her for her spirit. Maybe people who listen today for her beautiful voice will be inspired tomorrow by her beautiful spirit. Her songs and poems really inspire me. Does anyone have a transcript (or, heck, a tape) of what she said on MTV? I hope the people who are suffering from Jewel-idolatry will be able to grow past their idolatry and really love Jewel --- which means they won't do things like scream at her, because it's inconsiderate, and won't post nasty comments about her clothes. (I mean, would you post nasty comments about your best friend's clothes?) Jewel has a beautiful message of truth and love, and it's so pure that in this world of ubiquitous fear, everyone thinks it's sappy and naive. But Jewel is not sappy or naive; she's been through a hell of a lot, and she's come out with her spirit still shining. It's a real inspiration to me. Nobody but e. e. cummings has inspired me this way before; no music but Tori Amos's "Little Earthquakes" has touched me like this before. I hope we can think of each other in the same spirit Jewel expresses in her songs. I know that if Jewel decided to flaunt her body and use it to gain popularity and album sales, I would lose some respect for her, mostly because it would be hypocritical of her, and there is nothing that irritates me more than hypocrisy. ~Amy, the angel who loves mystery ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Nov 1998 10:45:45 -0600 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: Repeated lines, etc. This is becoming quite common for sure...I read the review of her CD in the latest Rolling Stone mag last night..the one with Will Smith on the cover. In the review, they make a reference to some lines, like 3 or 4, that she repeats almost verbatim (word for word) four songs later. The first time is in Enter from the East. When she talks about having 4 doors, 3 waits for lightning, one waits for you, etc., anyway, in Absence of Fear, there's a verse practically identical to that...only the numbers change. She doesn't use the numbers 3 and 4. But the reviewer said that she can do this in her songs, and no one even notices (I'm paraphrasing here). It's true, I didn't even notice, until I read that, then looked at the lyrics. So Jewel repeating things, lines, and words too, like fragile, flame, innocent, love, angel, faith, all those types of things, is nothing new. She's been doing that for years.
