"oh, well jewel said don't idolize her, so if you say she is pretty, you aren't a fan" and "jewel isn't dressed like she used to be, it isn't her" or even"I can't believe you all hate her now because she is a slut and has messed up teeth" Here is my idea on Jewel. She is a sexy sexy woman who is over talented in many areas. She is sweet, and wants to help people. I dig her, I don't over obsess and get pissed at other people for being too obsessed, while you yourself are about to cry over the fact that Jewel has a short skirt on and changed a line of lyrics recording a new song. For years we have been on the floor in the foetal position waiting in agony for the new album. Finally it's here and people cant handle it because its not what they thought it would be. Thats fine, but to acomplish what Jewel has done by the age of 24 is amazing. I am only a year younger and I can only dream of doing or being a part of the things she has done. If you go by the careers of the beatles and the Rolling stones, Jewel should have another 30 years to produce the album YOU want. so dont worry it will happen! As for "spirit", I too wondered if it was worth waiting for. But, 4 days on, I am finding myself get into the album, start to remember songs and badly try to singalong. It reminds me of when I first heard POY and the same emotional changes i went through as I got into the album. In this world, we need great speeches and songs to remind us about what's good and bad in live. I love it when an artist uses his or her power to bring a statement or message to the world. Jewel has used her power to create Hands. I'm sure we all want world peace and to end hunger and abolish prejudice and hate! But we all unfortunately know that with hate in the world that this will never happen. I think it's people like Jewel with songs like Hands that gives us a renewed hope for world peace and for equailty! 5 years i ago i started P.E.A.C.C.E an organization for pro-eqaulity and pro-world peace! Today, with over 3000 members this is possible. Anyway, what i'm trying to say is that my like your hands may be small but they are still there. Do like Jewel, make a difference before it's too late! EDAs, Okay, I have a couple things I would like to mention. First has to do with Chime Bells. Personally, I think that this is one of the most amazing songs I have ever heard. I can listen to it over and over and still be amazed as if it were my first listening. The first time I heard it was when Jewel opened for Bob Dylan at the Embarcadero in San Diego. It was many moons ago, when Jewel was hardly known. Throughout her set, she was treated as "just another singer." People, although they may have heard of her, were not paying much attention to her (at least not like they do these days.) However, when she started singing Chime Bells (yodelling), it was amazing. The crowd stopped talking, caulked there heads in her way, and by the time the song was coming to an end, the crowd was wild. Screaming and yelling... it was amazing. Second, there is a pretty big concert happening in San Diego in December, it is called Jingle Ball '98. It is hosted by Star 100.7 (http://www.histar.com). Over the past month, they have been surprising listeners with new bands which are added to the venue. The line-up so far is Berlin (80s), Bare Naked Ladies, Everclear, Johnny Lang, Steve Poltz, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Mark Springstein (80s), and a couple more. Anyways, to make a long story short, they said they are going to announce another, very special, member to the line up. The set-director gave the listeners a hint: "You better wash your HANDS." I didn't think much of it until one of the DJs starting talking how he can't wait to meet Jewel, and wondering what he is going to ask her. Ohhh, I can't wait to find out if it is her. That would be really neat. Oh, you guys, of course, will be the first to know, right after me. :c) Cody Rush The San Diego Angel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Nov 1998 03:15:35 EST From: Angeljlb96@aol.com Subject: ANOTHER SNL POST?!?!? This one doesn't mention...the "you know what" ;-) Sender: owner-jewel@smoe.org Precedence: bulk I just had to comment on the fact that a lot of people were talking about Jewel's "go-go" dancing for Hands on SNL. I was watching it with a friend, and we thought this was one of the best things about it...mainly because that's how we dance when we hear the song. I spoke to my friend Cilla about it on the phone that night, and she said the same EXACT thing. I still get the message Jewel's trying to convey with the song, and I dance to it as well. As a matter of fact, we spent the evening dancing to it in that manner, mocking Jewel...so I just had to comment on that, because that was one of my favorite things about SNL, that she didn't do everywhere else. Thanks for listening to my small amount of babble. First I need to thank all fans, that put RealMovie files of Jewel's appearances on there Homepages, especially on the Audio Only Page and on AlienInvasion. You guys are the only way for us to see most of that performances, please keep the good work up. Now to Spirit. I got it on Monday and when I first listened to it, I was not overwhelmed. But after listening to it a couple of time I realized my problem. I did expect it to be PoY Part II. When I started to hear it as a CD on it's own, I started to love it. How can anyone expect this to sound similar to PoY? How many years have gone since then? Jewel is no teenager anymore, she is a woman. I think she should try out everything in music, she tried acustic stuff, now she tries how her songs sound with a band. Can't wait to see, if her concerts changed too, 'cause it should be no problem to perform most songs on Spirit solo/acustic. Anyway, this is just opinion, Christian. P.S. Has any German EDA got the Hands single yet? I ordered it, but they could not deliver it... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Nov 1998 11:38:47 +0000 From: "Richard Edlin" Subject: Re: My take on Spirit (might be a little controversial) > Date: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 15:57:59 +0200 > From: Cris Eichler > Subject: My take on Spirit (might be a little controversial) > > This album kind of makes me angry...... why ? Well, because I think > it shows merely 60 per cent of Jewel's amazing talents, as a > songwriter as well as a singer. From a musical perspective the album > suffers from it's theme of spirituality and the "we're all O.K." > message if you ask me, because this has excluded a whole bunch of > songs to appear on the album that are far superior to the vast > majority of songs on Spirit. Unfortunately, I agree. The idea of having a concept album isn't a bad one in and of itself ... established artists can do it because their fans already know their true range. I don't think Jewel is an established artist in this sense (or at least not outside of the US). To illustrate, just look at the critical reviews of Spirit where she's portrayed as a platitude- spouting, empty-headed hippie-chick. Until an artist earns the respect of people at large, I don't think a concept album will ever work as it's not seen as a concept, it's seen as a refleciton of the enitirety of the artist. Jewel isn't seen as a gifted muscian choosing to write in an affirmative way but rather as a pretty girl with a nice voice but a pretty shallow viewpoint on life. I think that's a real shame. POY was her debut and, more than anyone, I think Jewel knows its limitations! In an attempt to show that she's 'moved on' from both POY and the Bearsville recordings she's either ignored much of her previous work, or completely revamped it. I personally don't think this has been an entirely positive transition, as Jewel seems to undervalue much of her earlier work. I'm afraid that some of her Jewelstock songs, although they're of very high quality, will now never see the light of day. My worry is that if Jewel manages to succeed with Spirit, and I think she will, any move to reintroduce social critique into her published works will be seen as Jewel 'losing her spirit'. As I doubt she'll want to been renouncing 'informed optimism' any time soon, I worry that she'll be stuck producing marketable 'inspirational' tunes that won't satisfy her creativity in the long term. (While I doubt she'll ever be restricted too much by Atlantic, I think her own desire not to disillusion fans will do it.) Growth is a long, slow process and rather than producing a reasonably homogenous album (at least, compared to her repertoire) I'd think she'd have been better to document the growth through the song she put on her sophomore album. Rather than just 'Spirit', I think she'd have been wiser to have released a double album where each disk showed a different side to her songwriting. I would go so far as to recommend different producers for each disk, so as to help keep a distance between each of them! The first CD could have been a catalogue of some of the songs that would have brought balance to Spirit as 'Daddy' did to POY - not 'nice' songs but counters to the saccharin pieces. On Spirit, only Deep Water, Down So Long and Fat Boy would fall into this category, with Do You as a possible addition to the list. (I agree with Sean (?) that Fat Boy would needs to be introduced in context if it's of publishable standard.) First Album - concentrates on negative relationships and/or society. For want of a better title, "Flesh"?. Sattelite, Carnivore, 1000 Miles Away, Marital Carnival (improved), Jupiter(?), Do You, SIBTW, Deep Water (normal speed), Fat Boy, Down So Long, LMJLMA and His Pleasure is my Pain Second Album - Spirit Hands, Absence of fear (sped up), WSIT, Innocence Maintained (which I've always hated :( ), Kiss the Flame, Barcelona, Life Uncommon, Enter from the East, Last Dance Rodeo (?), 1st operatic - LM?, Face of Love (improved), 2nd operatic - original number? This would have probably given a better reflection of what Jewel is capable of. I can't think of any track on Spirit that has the emotional sparseness of say, Amen. Jewel may have matured musically since POY but I suspect POY had better balance :-(. > What makes me angry is that I had really hoped for an album that shows > all what she's capable of, so that you could say to your friends "You > don't know jewel? Go and get Spirit..." > This has not materialized. You still got to tell 'em that the album > they're about to hear, while it is very good, doesn't paint an accurate > picture of the artist..... :-( I agree ... I'm not going to recommend Spirit to my friends for just that reason.
