May cause eye strain, black-outs, and sterility on some. Sense of humor required :) ENJOY! Stay beautiful, Zaly 0:) - --------------------------------------- The following is the transcript for when: JEWEL was interviewed on MAX 95.7 Radio Philadelphia, PA by "Morning Show" hosts Chuck Doud & Genny Layne on November 13, 1998 from 9:00 AM to 9:20 AM (check out their web site at http://www.max957.com ) (Transcribed by Zaly Ruiz--As always, please keep in mind that reading a conversation doesn't do complete justice to the way things were said and the "feeling" expressed by the human voice, but I did my best. Enjoy :) Any corrections or problems, please e-mail me at CreamyXGoo@aol.com 0:) NOTE FROM ME: I missed the very, very beginning of the interview because my tape recorder started taping a little late, but basically Chuck just started out by saying "thanks for joining us on MAX 95.7; we are now talking with Jewel who is calling in; Hi, Jewel;" and Jewel answers, "Hi guys") GENNY: Is this a little early for you to be up or are you doing O.K.? JEWEL: Um, I'm a little tired. GENNY: A little tired? JEWEL: Yeah. GENNY: (giggles) CHUCK: Where'd they hold you up? In a hotel or something? JEWEL: Yeah. GENNY: (giggles) CHUCK: U-huh. GENNY: You know, we were just talking a few minutes ago about everything you've got coming up right now. I can imagine that you would be tired. JEWEL: Yeah. GENNY: you've got...let's see...you've got...Saturday Night Live this...this Saturday...who's gonna be the celebrity on with you? JEWEL: Joan Allen? CHUCK: We didn't know either. That's why we were asking. We were just (laughs) concerned that you were gonna be there. GENNY: What songs are you gonna be playing? JEWEL: Ah..."Hands" and "Down So Long." GENNY: Oh great! I love that song! I was just listening to it yesterday. That's a great tune! CHUCK: And then there's Rosie O'Donnell on Wednesday, right? JEWEL: Yeah. CHUCK: U-huh. GENNY: And how many time have you done her show now? JEWEL: Yeah, I did the pilot for her. CHUCK & JENNY: Oh great! Yeah. JEWEL: Yeah. GENNY: How so fun! JEWEL: Yeah. GENNY: So that'll be a nice little kinda get-together again. JEWEL: (agrees) GENNY: Then you've got the Tonight Show with Jay Leno coming up the next night. JEWEL: Yep. GENNY: And you're doing the David Letterman Show on Thanksgiving? JEWEL: Yep. GENNY: Wow CHUCK: And then what? (laughs) JEWEL: The Christmas Lighting Tree with Garth Brooks. GENNY: Oh, in Rockerfeller Center. JEWEL: Yeah. GENNY: Yeah...and this Monday, you're gonna be online doing Fancast, right? JEWEL: Yep. GENNY: Wow, that's crazy! CHUCK: Talk about a full plate. JEWEL: And I get to talk to you guys for five dollars a day. GENNY: Exactly. (laughs) CHUCK: Hey, not bad. You can deal with that. You know we got to hear the album, Genny and I, yesterday, they locked us up in a room...the whole album SPIRIT...& they wouldn't let us leave with it. And I got all kinds of heck for not bringing it home. My girlfriend Bonnie was like, "hey, where the hell is it?" But, no, I got to listen to it, but really great. And I notice on the inside sleeve that you dedicate the whole album to your mom. JEWEL: Um, yeah. GENNY: She did some singing with you on this one too, right? JEWEL: Yeah. GENNY: What did she sing? "Hands" with you? JEWEL: She sings "Hands" and she sings her own song at the end of the album. CHUCK & JENNY: Ohhhh, that's the hidden track! CHUCK: We were wondering what that's about. JEWEL: Yeah. GENNY: All right, you just finished up filming a new movie, too, right? Ah, what was that called? RIDE WITH THE DEVIL? JEWEL: U-huh. GENNY: What was that...working on that? JEWEL: It was great! It was REALLY hard. CHUCK: Yeah? GENNY: Was it really? JEWEL: Yeah, but it was really good. GENNY: Yeah, you know, I was wondering, too, because you get to meet so many famous people and that kind of thing...and I...um, just...I mean...it's gotta be such a strange thing. Is there anybody that it still really just makes your stomach turn, that you get really exited about meeting them, seeing them? JEWEL: You know, it's funny. I met a lot of people and that I've never...you know...I see them as a normal person...maybe because I was raised in Alaska and there just wasn't a lot of hype around. Heck, I didn't even know who Warren Beatty was when I met him. CHUCK & GENNY: (laugh) GENNY: Did you not? JEWEL: No. CHUCK: Yeah, who are you, kid? You want an autograph? JEWEL: When I met Lyle Lovett, I didn't mean to, and I didn't think I'd freak out, but for some reason I walked up to him, and I was...and he goes...and he looks down at me with the little funny hairdo and says, "Hi, nice to meet you, ma'am" or Jewel, or something, and I was like (giggling, snorting, incoherent), snotted out of my nose, my knees got weak. (laughs) CHUCK & JENNY: (laugh) CHUCK: Wait a second, you were married to Julia Roberts for a while, right? JEWEL: (laughs) GENNY: How strange is that? I mean...I...I always think that's gotta be the wildest thing for people when they DO become celebrities, to get to meet some of the celebrities. That's gotta be a strange thing? JEWEL: Yeah, I don't know why I had that reaction. (All laugh) GENNY: That's so funny! CHUCK: Well, listen Jewel, we're gonna play one of your songs. Then come on back and we'll talk to you some more. [At this point, they talk about a contest they had that morning to try and win tickets to attend MTV's Total Request Live on Tuesday, November 17th. Then they played the radio edit version of "You Were Meant for Me", which all of us have heard by now :) Then they continue the interview.] CHUCK: MAX 95.7, Jewel. "You Were Meant For Me." It's, ah, 9:10, and, ah, Jewel's been kind enough to be hanging out with us on the phones this morning...been talking with her. GENNY: Yes. CHUCK: Isn't that fun, huh? GENNY: Yes, IT IS! CHUCK: OK, she's in a hotel room right now up in New York City. You know, Jewel, earlier on we we're talking, before we had to go back here, and, ah, yo may very well have a book out...coming out pretty soon? JEWEL: GOD, we hope! I haven't started writing it yet, but it is supposed to be out in July. CHUCK: Oh, wow, better get busy. JEWEL: I know. GENNY: Well, the first one did so well, making it out onto the "Top 10" of the New York Times. Did you expect it to do that well? JEWEL: Gosh, I didn't. GENNY: Really surprised, huh? JEWEL: Yeah, very. GENNY: I know when I went into one of the local bookstores in here and I saw it on the front counter, you know, where everybody can kinda pick-it up on their way out, I was like WOW, this is HUGE! JEWEL: (laughs) CHUCK: It's on the coffee table at our house, I'll tell you. JEWEL: (laughs) GENNY: Well, tell us this...what is the next book gonna be about? The first on has a lot of poetry. Is it gonna be the same thing, the next one, or? JEWEL: It's gonna be a lot of short stories actually. GENNY: Oh, really! JEWEL: Yeah, kinda about my little childhood in Alaska and the...the odd people there, and, you know... CHUCK: Now, did you keep like a working journal and these are just gonna be things transcribed from there, or is it...? JEWEL: I think I'm gonna write most of it from scratch. CHUCK: OK. GENNY: So a little autobiography in a way? JEWEL: A little bit, yeah. GENNY: Kind of just about growing up and that kind of thing? JEWEL: (agrees) GENNY: Where are you living these days? JEWEL: Ohhhh, bayside of San Diego, but I've been there maybe a couple of weeks in a couple of years. GENNY: Is that one of your favorite places? JEWEL: It's all right. I really like it. CHUCK: Do you get to hang out at all since everything's been happening for ya, or...? JEWEL: Ohhhh, not much. I've been pretty busy. GENNY: Who do like to go see when you get a chance to go and see other performers? JEWEL: Steve Poltz?! GENNY: A-ha. JEWEL: Do you guys know him? CHUCK: He's the guy who helped you write...ah... JEWEL: "You Were Meant For Me." CHUCK: "You Were Meant For Me." Yeah, and he was on the video, too. JEWEL: He rocks! CHUCK: He rocks, huh? GENNY: (giggles) JEWEL: He's excellent! He's one of the best performers on the planet! You will not be disappointed if you see him. CHUCK: Yeah, he was, ah, he was in town in Philadelphia last night, matter of fact. GENNY: Well, what do you do when you get a bit of down time? Do you have any hobbies or anything that you'd like to just...if you had more time, you'd do more of? JEWEL: I'd been really into cattle-roping and into team-roping lately. GENNY: Really! JEWEL: Yeah, that's been a really great pastime. I'm not doing that much right now. GENNY: WOW! CHUCK: What's that crazy story we heard about the cattle? We heard you... GENNY: Oh no, there was this quote from you...that was about...about your new book that you might write, and you said something about that...about one of the stories in there yo might write about...ohhhh, what was it...? CHUCK: Resuscitating...? GENNY: Resuscitating cows, or something like that...or was it...? JEWEL: That was actually in my poetry book, actually. GENNY: Cow's mouth-to-nose resuscitation! That's what it was! JEWEL: My uncle did it on me! CHUCK: Ohhhh, OK. GENNY: (laughs) CHUCK: Ohhhh, I was gonna say bless you for being able... JEWEL: It was on a tiny baby cow. It was little. CHUCK & GENNY: Ohhhh! CHUCK: Ohhhh, OK, see, the way we got it there were a lot of questions. CHUCK & GENNY: (laugh) CHUCK: It was like, oh, OK, well you know I was saying...I was like God bless you for having the gall to say that, you know. JEWEL: (laughs) GENNY: Boy, Jewel! I can't imagine seeing you out at some rodeo, or something...that would be, ah...is that something you like to go and watch and that type of thing, since you're into the roping and that type of thing? JEWEL: My dad's a cowboy! CHUCK: Ohhhh, OK. GENNY: Really? JEWEL: I was raised with him roping, cutting horses. We all, you know...we did, you know, we branded cattle. We herded cattle. We had the whole nine yards when I was a kid, but I never learned to rope. Um, I'm a HUGE rodeo fanatic, like I follow them religiously on television. CHUCK & GENNY: Yeah? GENNY: Well, what is the thing you're most looking forward to in all the appearances you've got coming up here? JEWEL: Um, I like television. GENNY: (agrees) JEWEL: I kinda look forward to all of them. GENNY: Well, good! We look forward to seeing you then. So Saturday Night live this Saturday night, right? JEWEL: (agrees) GENNY: All right, well, we're looking forward to it. Are you going to be in any skits or just doing the music thing? JEWEL: Just doing the music thing. GENNY: Well, I wondered, with the whole acting thing...? CHUCK: (agrees) GENNY: if you'd gotten involved in that too? JEWEL: No, not doing a skit. CHUCK: Do you look at yourself doing more of that in the future at all? JEWEL: Oh, yeah! We'll see. CHUCK: Yeah, Ohhhh, she's keeping it all ambiguous on us. JEWEL: Hummm?!? GENNY: Well, you know, you were saying that this was a difficult thing, and it was hard to...I heard that...you said it was hard for you to open yourself up. JEWEL: See! She understands me. GENNY: I CAN understand. CHUCK: Genny comes from theater, you see. GENNY: I'm a theater person, so I totally...understand that 'cause you're really stretching out & kinda feeling those different things. JEWEL: It was a really ambitious first role. GENNY: Yeah. JEWEL: I mean, Ang Lee is a GREAT director and it was a REALLY HARD part. GENNY: What type of part are you playing? JEWEL: I play a 19-year-old Civil War widow, and the first half is, you know, crying the whole time. GENNY: WOW! JEWEL: It was REALLY intense. GENNY: That does, especially since, you know, that's not something that you could've gone through in your own life. JEWEL: (agrees) GENNY: So you kinda have to reach down and find something you have in common with the character, I guess. JEWEL: (agrees) GENNY: Well, listen, we're really looking forward to talking to you more, and finding out more about what's going on with you, and, ah, getting the new album out into the stores this next week. JEWEL: (agrees) CHUCK: Well, congratulations on your success, Jewel! JEWEL: Thanks a lot, guys! CHUCK: And all the best! And hopefully we'll talk to you again real soon. JEWEL: Sounds good! Take care! (hangs up) CHUCK: She's sooo NICE. Oh my God! GENNY: She REALLY IS! CHUCK: I never would've thought! You think when people become...like...celebrities, they don't even have the time...they don't wanna talk to you anymore. GENNY: I KNOW! CHUCK: She's soo REAL! [This is the end of the interview. At this point they hold their contest and play more music.] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 18:00:07 -0500 From: thumbkin@juno.com (Christa L Hinman) Subject: Jewel on Rosie Lovely EDAs~ I was watching Jewel on Rosie today and I have nothing bad at all to say besides that I wish that her section was longer! One thing though, I didn't like the fact that she used a piano on "Absence of Fear" I like the guitar better, and I didn't like the fact that she slowed "deep water" down and made it a slow song. But I'm not complaining!!!!! I'm soooooo HAPPY!!!!! Also, I think their gonna give me some posters but they didn't get them when the album came in so they told me to come back when they do!!! To all who cares, I agree with the writer of this post because I saw Jewel TV on MTV on Tuesday and I could see that Jewel was quite disgusted about the fact that everybody was climbing over everybody else and fighting with everybody else just to get a copy of her new album, I mean, I would be pretty anxious as well, but I wouldn't be trampling over people left and right. Oh well, that's human nature for ya I guess. I just have to say that I feel really sorry for Jewel and that she had to go through all of that.
