When she gets really whiny and nasal and sings too high,I can't stand it (ie. Angel Standing By.) Sometimes she does this thing with her voice that also annoys me, 'cause it's overdone...like in Fat Boy. The tricks that she does with her voice that I do like are when she sings rock style and makes her voice crack a little, and I like when she sings naturally and purely in a soothing, emotional way. Also likes when she really belts one out, but not when she gets nasal or whiny. I don't really like what she does on Enter From The East, where she changes octaves in the chorus. Another song I really don't like Jewel's voice on is Adrian, where she gets that annoying little girl voice. Ugh! (Barf) Right now I'm at work listening on CD-Rom to Spirit, and the song on right now is Kiss The Flame. Sounds very good...sounds like she's trying to do Joni Mitchell at some points. Sometimes her songwriting, like Do You? and Sometimes It Be That Way seem to me like she's trying to emulate Bob Dylan. I like Jewel, and even though she can be very sappy, I think she's a wonderful contribution to the music scene. Eclectic, diverse, etc. (ugh--don't like the "boopy doop" thing at the beginning of Jupiter) Jewel will be Jewel...I find her interesting and special, but don't like everything about her. Funny, I never liked blondes, but I do find Jewel very intriguing-looking. Sometimes she sounds like she's emulating Tori Amos as well, like in certain parts of Down So Long (not the chorus), and other times she sounds distinctly Jewel. what i like most about her voice is when it sounds like an old friend's--comforting, soothing, familiar, warm, etc. Hmmmmmmmmm.............after lunch rambling at work....... (mission statement) To All EDA's: According to recent events, I have been getting kind of upset at some of you for some of your mails. I am not one to say that you are wrong because I don't have the authority to say you are wrong. Listen to me, some of you on the mailing list are going about this list the right way, admiring Jewel for what she's got on the inside, a talent that is so great that it's amazing. Then again, some of you are going about this the wrong way by stating that you are admiring and idolizing Jewel because of her looks. I would be lying if I said that Jewel wasn't a very attractive woman, because she is. That's not the reason that I admire her though. the reason I admire her and love her the way that I do is because her music has touched my heart in a way that no other music can touch my heart. Some of you are going about this list the absolute wrong way, and that's a problem. I see some E-mails that have gotten posted that talk about nothing but "did you see that skirt she wore on Saturday Night Live?" or "Man, she was wearing a dress that you could just see through!" Correct me if I am wrong, but that is not the reason that we are on this list, and that is NOT the reason that you should admire Jewel (again, that's my opinion) because she's got something that overpowers looks any day: A talent that can't be beaten, a voice so beautiful and true that it heals the wounded heart and lives within us all the time and can even guide us through tough times in our lives. Think about this people, please. If you were a famous musician/singer and you worked so hard to try and touch the hearts of people that listen to your music, and you worked every single day of your life to perfect you voice, and once you did, through all of your hard work and dedication to your profession, would YOU want people to look at you and undermine your talent for your looks? Think carefully people, I am serious and I want some of you to answer me, please. I am not trying to be mean or angry, but it just frustrates me that some of you look at Jewel not for her pure talent, but for her beauty. I can't say that Jewel is not beautiful, because she is, she is gorgeous, but I don't concentrate on that, I concentrate on the fact that her voice is the most beautiful thing that I have ever heard in my life. I am a singer too, and a musician. I have played the piano for about 14 years old, that's since I have been two years old, and if I ever got to be famous in that area, I wouldn't want people to look at me because they think I am handsome and really good-looking, but for the fact that I can play a mean piano and can have a good voice that goes with that. In closing, please think about what you say and sometimes what you think. Admire Jewel for what she is, what she has, and let that touch your hearts. Andy The Jeweled Angel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 13:03:24 -0800 From: Michael Carmona Subject: JEWELY BRAVO Hello EDAs, I've been a hard core Jewel fan for years now and have never said anything negative about Jewel. However, I just finished listening to her new CD Spirit and have to comment. Did anyone ever see that Brady Bunch episode where Greg Brady is making music on his own, just him and his guitar? Greg writes and sings some songs then gets a manager and goes into a studio to record his first album. The studio decides that he needs a new look, so they dress him up in these gaudy bright cloths with tassels and beeds hanging all over the place and throw on some shades so he looks "cool". Then they play back his album to him and you can't even recognize his own voice because it's been so distorted and electronically changed to fit what the industry thinks will sell more albums with. Greg finally leaves the commercialized industry of music. Well, that story reminds me of Jewel and her new CD. She seems to be really selling out! I don't care for the CD at all! Too much band - I never did like the band. The recording is bad - the highs are too high! Sounds like Jewel is screaming in your ears - and that isn't a good thing! The songs are all changed in there sound because of that damn band behind her! And those electric keyboards have to GO! The keyboards sound so lame and sometimes I fell like a flying saucer is overhead. I'll give "Hands" a good comment even though Jewel isn't playing anything on it. I wonder what it sounded like when she created it on her guitar. I guess we'll never know. The video is a total rip off of City Of Angels and who was Jewel's makeup/hair dresser that day - Tori Amos? I am obviously a wee bit disappointed in Spirit. I don't plan on listening to it a second time. I used to love to hear just Jewel and her acoustic guitar. The good old days. That's when the music was all naturally and beautifully her and only her. Jewel doesn't play the drums! Jewel doesn't play keyboards! Those tunes and melodies from the other instruments are not part of her creation at all! Those are from some strangers thrown in by the industry, her musci labels, whoever the big guys are, just trying to make music in the back ground fit Jewel on her guitar - it isn't working for me. They have this belief that you need certain things to be big. I can her them over there, "You need a band to be big. You need to rock to be a hit. You need electronics to sell, for big bucks, you need a bassist to be radio played, you need another guitaris to be dancable, you need to change, you need this, you need that, you change, change now, get some tighter cloths, higher this, louder that, change this now, you need electric, no more acoustic, go loud, change guitar, change those, change, drums, electric, louder faster slower change for us us us money more more money money more for us more for you money good, real good, good for me, good for you, yum good, umm good, gobble gobble where not in Kansas anymore Todo Ahhhh Haaaa Hoaaaa Muuhaaa Haaa Haaa!!!!!!! Imagine if you will, you go outside in your back yard and find a beautiful daisy that is all alone singing in the sunshine. Singing beautiful music just by itself. She brings such joy and magic to your life. You invite some friends to see her, then more come and soon the daisy is discovered and limos whisk her away to Hollywood. The next time you see that sweet innocent daisy that brought you so much pleasure and joy singing such simple and beautiful songs is when she is on the 12 midnight show all dolled up like the Terminator's play toy for the weekend with an electric guitar in her hand and a band rocking it up behind her. That's sick! That is what the industry can do to your daisy, to Greg Brady, and to Jewel Kilcher. Since Jewel seems to be moving on, so shall I. I will be selling most of my Jewel stuff soon so if you want to take advantage of my loss of hope in Ms. Kilcher, get on my Jewel Stuff Mailing List which is where I will start to sell off my parafanalia. I will most likely hang with the list for a while longer and still collect Jewel footage on video until it get to the point where I have no interest in what Jewel is doing anylonger (I am almost there). I am doing my own music now and will focus on keeping out the Electonic Big Man! Until next time. L8r! Hey all, I agree with this for the USA, but a really good idea would be to have a JewelStock Europe or something, because Jewel is about as big in Europe now as she was when JewelStock happened! So, maybe if we had a JewelStock Europe, Jewel could please the Euro-EDAs whilst on her European tour? If MrBB or someone could please pass this idea on to the management team, that'd be very good because us European fans really don't get to see as much of Jewel as you guys and I think we would really appreciate it a lot =) Thanks Tom ******************************************* tom.hall@megabit.net SaVaGe GaRdEn'S uNiVeRsE www.angelfire.com/pa/universe19/ ******************************************* "If I could tell the world just one thing It would be that we're all OK And not to worry cause worry is wasteful And useless in times like these..." - - Jewel, Hands. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 16:38:22 EST From: Mish370@aol.com Subject: Total request live "hands" was #8 o total request live today and they showed the live song from jewel tv. Michelle "shy angel" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 15:18:54 -0600 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: Reflections of... Has anyone noticed that Jewel adds a few words to the end of "Hands" each time she performs it? Those being, "Reflections of God". My question is, for anyone who might know this...why isn't it sung that way on the CD? Or is this just something she's added since the master recordings were done? I kind of like it better, it changes up the monotony of the end of that song. Both on SNL, and JewelTV on MTV yesterday, she sang it that way. Is Fat Boy the only song on the CD where it's just her and her guitar? That's what I think...as far as I can tell. Some others come close, but then the organ comes in too. It's such a drastic change from PoY..where all but 4 songs I think were just her and the guitar. I've heard it 1 1/2 times now, and even think more that Down So Long will most definitely be the next single...it may even do better than Hands...it just has more of a radio-friendly, harder edge sound to it. And it's way catchy...of course Hands is too. As for a third single...maybe Life Uncommon, but that almost sounds like country...was she serious when she made that comment yesterday? About doing a country album for her 3rd release? Woudn't surprise me all that much I guess. Some of her stuff is borderline anyway, like Morning Song even. Just throw a slide guitar sound in there, and you have a country song...a little more twang in her singing would add to it as well. Which I know is no stretch for Jewel. Another option for her 3rd single I think, and this would be really cool, but I think Deep Water has an outside chance. I'd love to hear that over the radio waves, mainly cause it's one of her older songs, like Down So Long. But at least Deep Water maintains "more" of the original sound...unlike Down So Long which is 180 degrees different altogether. So for an informal poll...what songs do you guys think will make the cut as future singles? Oh, and why hasn't anyone commented about how nice Jewel looked yesterday??? I mean, the list gets flooded when Jewel decides to vary her attire some, yet when she looks really classy and nice, not one person comments! Is that one-sided or what? Let's be fair. And someone posted about her feet having oil on them on the cover of Spirit, does anyone know what this guy was talking about? Since the cover is only of her face...I didn't get that post at all. Guess that's enough for now...happy listening to Spirit! You gotta wonder. I was wondering why the band kept playing that each time after the commercial break. I thought it was just some good filler music...obviously though, there was a reason for that. Derrick ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 16:49:03 -0500 From: jane margaret keene Subject: meg's jewel day on jewel tv (mtv) hi all, Prompted by Alan, I'm posting to tell you all about my fun filled day.... this is really a great story I must admit. I was one of the NYC eda's that MTV asked to come down early and tell them stuff about jewel. There were ten of us. And, In classic meg fashion, i talked alot. so on Monday I got a weird phone call from Wendy at mtv (who was the EDA contact) and she told me that the producer wanted me to come down and be Jewels stand in for rehearsal all day at MTV.... so I did. they had me pretend to be Jewel ALL DAY LONG... and let me tell you, after walking a mile in her shoes, poor girl! that interview deal is harder then you would think. so I spent hours blocking all of jewels moving around, and answering all of the questions as Jewel. one of the techies put film in the camera, so there now this whole tape of me sitting next to carson daily looking more and more frustrated... with carson singing jewel songs (and marilyn manson songs, which DID come up during the show, if you remember) and people telling me, Jewel we need you over here, blah blah blah.... I think one of the funniest parts is I got alot of the answers right almost verbatim. jewel said exactly what I did :) Which was hilarious. Even down to the point that when they asked her what artists she liked she looked kinda blank and then named someone off the wall, and stuck to her guns.... which was a meg call earlier in the day! AND, Carson picked my brains for questions and used meg stuff for half of the show, when I left for lunch with the EDA's he apparently re-worked the show to put stuff he had made me tell him in. So. truly, It was one of the most bizarre and humorous experiences I have had recently. i'm not a big fan of Carson after all that, but I hear Jewel isn't either... so go figure. So. we did after all infiltrate MTV. i even talked to various vj's (Jessie is JUST as lost in real life). We saw jennifer love hewitt smooching with carson, we checked out the food facilities (pretty nice!) and made friends with the techies (the cue card lady is GREAT, and so is the boy who holds the cord for the first camera) and we talked to one of method mans friends (he had a little hand held camera to record the experience and jewel should consider a joint project :). I was completely embarrassed when Carson started talking about my Jewel knowledge in front of Jewel herself on air (you all heard it, I was the first question girl, in the blue shirt). because all I wanted to do was thank Jewel really.... But the Mtv people called me Jewel even after the show, and told me to get up and disagree with her if she said something I hadn't said............. it was really funny/weird. So. that's most of my story! Loved meeting other EDA's, hope to see you more often! and I loved jewel's sound check. (off air she was fooling around, and trying to sing her poems to down so long). Really fun! hope you all enjoyed the show... product of much hard work let me tell you. my love to all, Meg ~the little angel~ "our hands manifest thought, the world becomes what we belive" -Jewel ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #630 ***************************
