I hope all who went enjoyed themselves. I felt bad for all you outside folks standing in the rain, but it sounds like you did ok from the posts I read. For those curious about what you didn't see on the broadcast, after Jewel finished the regular show & went outside, she came back in the studio & had a nice relaxed jam with the band. MTV will likely show some of this at a later date, I guess. It was primarily to record "Down So Long" which they ran through two times, once as a soundcheck & another that was proffessionally shot surrounded by EDAs. To warm up a bit, she even played around with "House Of The Rising Sun"! Great to see you all. And I have to say, I'm now a big fan of Meg. (She asked the 1st question, for those who don't know her.) I hope she posts about the rest of her day! You'll definately enjoy her various experiences. She wins "the most hilarious day in general" award, by far! Great seein you all! Alan & AmyJo PS. I hope everyone payed attention to Jewel's answer to Amy Neufeld's question. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Sep 1998 13:30:32 -0700 From: "Dana Lopez" Subject: SNL on Real Video Hey Angels, For those of you that missed the SNL performance, you can catch it on = Real Video at http://members.aol.com/jewelpage=20 BTW, I loved how she looked, danced, & sang. I got my CD last night approx. 8 seconds after 12. We listened to it on the way home and i was blown away by Deep Water....it almost made me cry, thats how beautiful i thought it was. I have to admit, I'm a little disappointed in the sound of some of them....its very mellow. Its not a bad thing...i think i was expecting more. but, i do think its a great album. I hate to rain on everyone's parade, but I'm probably going to. While I love Jewel(don't get this wrong) for her music, message, and inspiration, it seems like more and more people are going over the edge into "wierdom". This list is starting to scare me. I've been on and off this list since shortly after POY came out. It was cool, there were quirky tidbits of info, people(many more than now) shared their inspiration, creativity, and ideas. Now it seems like the list is turning into "she looked like a slut", "her dr*ss was too short", "I smelled the stage after she walked on it" etc... This is getting way out of hand. I hope people will LISTEN TO WHAT SHE SAID ON MTV TONIGHT. I can't quote her directly, but it was to the affect that she appreciated the EDA's because they are "inspired" by her, not that they idolize her. We all have our own mind, soul, and SPIRIT; use them to create great things of your own. After all, Jewel is just a person, like you and me. Everyone needs inspiration, but no one needs an idol. It seemed apparent to me that Jewel found something weird about the fans outside, and the whole CD thing. I don't blame her. Flame me if you feel it necessary, but you will only be proving my point. I think this group is great, and all the people in it, this needs just be brought back down to reality. This list has definitely lost a large contributor, namely Alan(MrBB), but life goes on. This list can survive, and so will you. Inspiration lives forever, but idolatry dies alone. And that's nto the case anymore. > > -- Mark Hi Mark, Just a quick (or not so quick) note to let you know I totally agree. Persons should learn to love an artist's work, not the artists themselves, especially since they are only the result of public aproval and contribution. Where would Shakespere be if he was only popular with teenagers suffering from identity crisis?? Seeing how he has been dead for over 400 years the impact of his work would no longer exist. In short an artist is only as good as the people he/she respresent in their art. That's all a good musician/writer is, a representative. If you think about what they themselves actually contribute to society .. well it isnt much in terms of the musician or artist themsleves. I think Jewel's song hands touches on this concept. It's not the musician that is important, it is the people or society with the poitive moral structure expressed through good musicians that is important. your overly analytical EDA Kevin Via ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 03:26:56 EST From: DmBear978@aol.com Subject: My 2 cents in all this Jewel hysteria Holla folks! By now we've pretty much heard that "Spirit" is a great album and (place your slang here). Anyway, I taped the Jewel TV this evening(thanks to the power of re-airing) and I've gotta say that Jewel is breaking away from the small town, naive, 19-ish girl that everybody thought was so cute and becoming a full- blown(a bit extreme) pop star! What about us? The first thing that should pop into your heads is that evolution in the EDA list and Jewel fan base in general was bound to happen. More people getting tunned into what Jewel is really about. Some will get into it, some won't. More newbies coming in and unfortunatly, some vets. moving out. Some people want to complain about Jewel's shows being not as intiment as they wished. Well, sorry to burst your bubble but they probably won't be intiment for quite awhile. Maybe we'll get a lucky break and Jewel will do a second Jewelstock. I missed the first one by only a few months and even then (when the list was only about 600 subscribers) it was the thing to talk about for MONTHS ;-) What I'm trying to get at is this:Sure Jewel will(at least for now) be all hyped up and I'll get to thinking sometimes its a bit overkill how much time and money is used to sell "Spirit", BUT the Jewel that most of us have gotten to connect to isn't the image Jewel, but the real Jewel. She isn't going to change who she is...she's grounded kinda like Garth Brooks in a way. BTW- you all saw the little "I've had five incredible years..." thing in the front of the booklet? Is that a "thanks you guys" to the EDAs? And what about "Deep Water" as the first track? Is that another thank you too or is it there cause it fits the theme? My 2 cents on "Spirit". Woe! I was really taken back by how different POY and Spirit are. I think there won't be as much popular singles on this one as on POY. She could have smiled a bit more in the sleeve pictures, IMO. "Down So Long" and "Do You" sound like they could be single material. Jupiter? Whats that?! That song is under par! I didn't hear Flea's unique bass playing at all on Barcelona. Sounds like this records gotta grow on me for awhile. :-) Kudoz to you lucky EDAs who infltrated MTV! Carson mentioned KROQ! LoL!!! The funny thing is, KROQ hardly EVER plays stuff like Jewel's music. Definitely can't agree with choice of fave songs - 'Fat Boy' is the weakest on the albun, in my humble opinion. Does anyone agree that 'Down So Long' is the most likely to be the next single. 'Life Uncommon' could be a surprise 'hit' - - it's got a very anthemic quality and appealing inspiring lyrics. Slan agus beannacht, Adrian, Irish Angel http://www.salonmagazine.com/ent/music/reviews/ Jewel <<...>> SPIRIT | ATLANTIC RECORDS BY ALEX PAPPADEMAS | Face it -- the girl can sing. Forget about the see-through dress and the line about the bacon-and-eggs smiley face in "You Were Meant For Me." Forget about the poetry book. Please. There's only one reason to listen to Jewel, and it's a good one -- that voice. The way it reaches keening highs and white-girl-gospel lows, pouring out in tender creaks and parenthetical asides. And throughout "Spirit," Jewel's second album, that voice has an unfailing loveliness. So it's a shame that all she does with it is cop a platitude. "Fat Boy" is a tenderly observed Shawn Colvin moment, "Barcelona" (featuring the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea, apparently a longtime friend, on bass) a very Joni postcard from the edge. And on "Jupiter," Jewel's nonverbal vocals follow the gulping beat of a tabla, and it's as slinky as the breakdown from TLC's "Creep." But Jewel spends most of "Spirit" tripping over her good intentions like an out-of-her-depth middle child, trying to heal the world with Shoebox Greetings. "If I could tell the world just one thing," she almost whispers at the beginning of "Hands," "it would be 'We're all OK.'" Sappy, sure. But the way she sings it, you almost won't mind. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #628 ***************************
