["Matt Adler" ] Spirit promo stuff/bumpersticker update [Jennifer Anderson Subject: I was the caller on Total Request!!!!! What a great day to be an EDA! I woke up today and listened to my Hands single over and over. I called in "sick" and went to Borders and got 'Spirit'. I then asked them if they had any of the promo posters left over. They did, so they gave me 2! Then, I called around to all of the record stores near me and I found the 2 Hands imports! I then found one local store that had the cardboard stand-out of Jewel and he said he would give it to me! I got home, listened to "Spirit", absolutely loved it and then turned on Total Request. I tried calling in all day to try and vote for Jewel so Hands could be on the countdown, but I didn't get ahold of them in time. But I did get ahold of them as soon as Carson said to call in for questions for Jewel. I talked to the lady who picks receives the calls and I told her that I had some questions. She liked them and told them to her producer. The producer gave her the green light and asked for me to come up with some more questions. I did, but they didn't have time to use them. I was on hold for about 20 minutes, waiting in anticipation, to talk to Jewel. They did 2 sound checks, I heard the studio mics, I heard Jewel talking, saying something about pinning the mic on her clothing and then they asked me to count to 10. Finally, after 3 EDA's asked their questions, I got to ask mine! Yay! Jewel was so nice. I am soooo happy. Well, I am off to watch the tape now. Thank You all EDA's. //\//\att //\dler the lucky and happy "thespian angel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1998 19:13:22 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: Re: The NEW official Jewel web-site At 08:13 AM 11/17/98 , DKookyBaka@aol.com wrote: >Well well well, quite and intesting thing. Mom gets credit for many of the facets of Jewel By George Varga POP MUSIC CRITIC November 15, 1998 Jewel requires little more than her guitar and her radiant voice to make her music shine. But when it comes to keeping the business side of her career polished, the San Diego-based pop star relies on someone else to supply the expertise and the elbow grease required to achieve maximum luster. That person, Nedra Carroll, is Jewel's best friend, most trusted confidante and North County housemate. She is also Jewel's mother. And her fastidious attention to detail and tireless efforts on her daughter's behalf have earned the respect of those close to the best-selling singer-songwriter. "If you took Nedra out of the equation, it would be unlikely we would have got to this point. She is a huge part of what Jewel does," said Keith Anderson, Jewel's tour manager. Added Steve Poltz, Jewel's close friend and erstwhile songwriting partner: "Nedra's definitely a port in the storm and a calming influence for Jewel. She reeks of cool and calm when the rest of the world is panicking. "She can always come up with a solution that makes sense, and that's very important for Jewel. Because she knows Nedra is someone who loves her very much and is someone she can trust." Jewel, 24, put it more simply: "People look at Nedra as if she were just a manager or mother, and I consider her a partner." Carroll, 48, worked with Jewel's first manager, Inga Vainshtein, to help negotiate and secure Jewel's contract with Atlantic Records in 1994. In mid-1995, she and Vainshtein became Jewel's co-managers. Since February, she has been her daughter's sole manager. Yet, the first thing Carroll did after Jewel signed with Atlantic was to remove herself entirely from the scene. "Then there was a period of about nine months after she got the deal where I was not involved," Carroll said. "Because my observation was that it was a time for separation between children and parents. So I pursued some other interests of mine. "And a lot of people told Jewel it would be disastrous to have her mother involved in her career, so it seemed a sort of mutual wisdom to me to withdraw. It frightened her that people said, 'You'll lose your relationship with your mother,' or 'It will never work.' " In mid-1994, on the eve of recording her debut album, Jewel asked her mother to become her co-manager. "At that point, Inga was more the front person," Carroll said. "I was more behind the scenes, planning the strategy and the longtime career development." And that was fitting, since Carroll had played a pivotal role in launching her now-famous daughter on the road to musical self-expression. Jewel grew up on an isolated, 800-acre farm near Homer, the remote Alaskan town (pop. 4,133) where she was born in 1974. Her family raised its own food and lived in a log cabin that had no running water. LIST MODERATOR NOTE: again the perpetual myth :-\ It's now common knowledge that Jewel was NOT born in Alaska, but rather Payson Utah. (it even says so on the present http://www.jeweljk.com website) Her performance debut came at age 6, when Jewel began singing in Alaska nightclubs and hotel bars with her mother and father. A regionally popular folk duo, Atz and Nedra Kilcher released two self-produced albums, 1977's "Early Morning Gold" and 1978's "Born and Raised on Alaska Land." (The couple divorced in 1982; Jewel subsequently lived with her father, then with her mother.) A gifted singer, Carroll is featured on two tracks on Jewel's new album, "Spirit." She exposed Jewel and her two brothers, Shane, 27, and Atz Lee, 22, to a wealth of music when they were children, from Gregorian chants and the classic songs of Cole Porter to French chanteuse Edith Piaf and otherworldly South American vocal sensation Yma Sumac. And she frequently sang to -- and with -- Jewel. "Musically, she's always had a very refined voice," Jewel said of her mother. "I'm still finding my voice in a lot of ways. And one thing I'm aware of is, when you have a good voice, you have to learn how not to use it. And Nedra is a fine example of that." Carroll also had a profound impact on her daughter in other ways. "She did glass art and performance art, so being involved with her was so creative and it opened me up," Jewel recalled. "One of the most neat things about her is that, since I was very young, she never assumed who I was. She always asked me who I was. She'd say, 'Who are you?,' and 'What do you think about this?' And when you're 8, it's fascinating, because no adults ask you what you think; they tell you what to do and think. "So she really helped me to develop and discover myself. . . . Nedra always goes to the deepest part of me and is never superficial. That's why I trust her so much." Jewel also credits her mother for encouraging her to pursue music, writing and visual art, and for helping her realize from an early age that fulfillment comes from nurturing your muse, not your pocketbook. "Nedra has grace, an unfaltering sense of compassion and very strong vision," said Jewel, who believes she would have been eaten up by the music industry if not for Carroll's loving guidance. "To tell you the truth, I was way too vulnerable. I had talent, but too many needs that would have destroyed me in this business. I wouldn't have made it; I wouldn't still be myself; I wouldn't have been able to handle the constant touring, the focus, the interviews. "It's tremendous pressure to handle and then be creative on top of it. I've always felt safe, only because Nedra was there. When she saw how uncomfortable I was as a songwriter and with having a hit record -- because I didn't want to have it -- she held things back so I could get comfortable. Things like that are rarely done in management. The only way I can be in this business is because she has wisdom that exceeds my youth. I have too many blindnesses." For Carroll, overseeing her now-famous daughter's career requires a combination of acting independently on Jewel's behalf and making sure Jewel has direct input into important decisions that affect her. "To let her blindly make decisions is obviously not wise," Carroll said. "But to make them all for her, with no opportunity for her to deal with circumstances that will face her for a long time, is not wise, either. She has to be involved in decisions, so that she can come to be a decision-maker in those areas, and she also needs to be educated by people other than myself." And what of those who might wonder if Jewel's manager is merely a frustrated stage mother attempting to step into her daughter's spotlight? "It's a natural question," Carroll replied. "One response would be to point out how common family businesses are in this country and around the world, and this essentially is a family business. And I love business and have been involved with business much of my life. "I enjoy the opportunity to work with integrity and to pioneer different ways of doing business, so I feel very challenged in ways I enjoy." Last year, Jewel and Carroll founded Common Ground, a nonprofit "endorsement foundation" devoted to worthy social causes and individuals. Since renamed Higher Ground for Humanity, the fledgling organization was created to achieve their shared goal of, in Jewel's words, "being the difference that makes the difference." Its official launch is pending. "I have a calling to help," Jewel said. "I've always felt impassioned about the injustices and the indignities placed on people. Nedra and I both made an agreement to try, if we could, to use this business to help other people. That's been our shared goal, and we can now realize it through Higher Ground for Humanity. This has always been a 50-50 partnership." "Jewel and I began as a team," Carroll added. "Not from the perspective of the development of her career, but because she and I had an interest in making a difference." "We both really believe that the blessings of our life are for the benefit of humanity. So our largest goal has to do with understanding where our resources can be of benefit." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1998 17:20:37 EST From: ICURMINE@aol.com Subject: OLS and www.jeweljk.com I was just sufing the official site and i came acrossed a section about Steve Poltz. WOW! what a performance.. as usual. I'm so jealous that I didn't get to go.. but I know a lot of you guys did so I'm SOOO Happy for you all!!!! I can't believe "Spirit" is FINALLY here!! FINALLY!!! hehe anyways for those of you who actually got to ask questions <> Good questions. Lately it seems like EVERYONE asks her the sammmme old questions... but for the most part they got her to say something intelligent rather than a 'yes' or 'no' answer. OOhh AH yes, and what about the part on Marilyn Manson??? Jewel probably had that question ready and geared up just to knock everyone's socks off when it was answered. hehe Thats our girl... ;o) Hands was sung beautiful... and the band members did great too... I saw a number of EDA shirts out there!! ((WOOHOO YOU GUYS!)) Well the only thing I have to say that I'm somewhat disappointed in is - yes, our low-profile talented singer/songwriter Jewel Kilcher has skyrocketed to the top. Which I'm sure we're all very glad for.. I mean, c'mon... isn't that what we were pushing for when we realized how amazing she was??? Lets get this girl noticed!!!! And she's finally made it. Of course we're all glad.. but it is a bit disheartening to see her now and remember the ole coffeeshop days and the natural wonder that swept us off our feet. But keep faith people!!! She's still there... as Juelish as ever!!!! Love you all!~ ~Michelle~ the angel who loves to jam** ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #624 ***************************
