Sean Hooks is right. Jewel's fanbase has gotten too large. The excessive fame is now a really bad thing. No longer are we now the ones who have the basic information that other fans didn't have. Any schmuck can come in and find anything out. We've been "demoted" in our status to that of the fan proletariat. There's nothing to distinguish us from the run-of-the-mill fan. Sure, the official website serves its purpose, but no longer will we be privy to special information or private and special fan status as we were in the past. Jewelstock 2? Can't happen anymore. Jewelstock tape #4? So long forever! Call me elitist, call me anti-Jewel. Flame away, I don't care. The truth is that with this role change by Alan, the things that made this list special to us as fans of Jewel are now gone. We are no longer anything more than a group of fans who share critiques and an occasional tape. We say the same things about what she wore here and how she sounded there. Let's just turn this thing into a goddamned BBS. That's all it is now. It had been moving that way for several months, and now the transformation is complete. I've been on this list now for almost two years. That's not as long as some (the list is within three months of it's 4th birthday). I wasn't on the list for J-stock. I've seen Jewel in five different cities, again, not as many as some. However, I've been disillusioned with this list for awhile. The reason I'm still here is to hear the MrBB news and to hear from the Old Fogeys who I've been to many a gathering with. Now, one of those reasons is gone. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the list vets (those that are left, since many left when the discussion here became very mundane and impersonal) felt the same as me. If you do, let me know. If you don't, let me know. I'm not leaving the list. I still have some hope that maybe we can continue to have an intelligent discussion here. Everyone on this list, whether they be 8 or 80, has that capability. Without Alan around anymore to supply us with "top secret" info, the list loses alot. However, we have not lost the opportunity to discuss things intelligently. Let's make a renewed effort to do that. To all EDA's iin Australia, In case you didn't realise - Spirit is already released as of today!!! (monday that is) I thought I would still have one more sleep and dragged myself of to work at 4 o'clock this morning feeling really down. On my lunchbreak I went to the music store to scout for posters, stands - anything and what did I discover? Spirit! already released!!!!! Well needless to say the rest of the day at work was really slow. It's now 3:05 and I've just raced home and am listening to it and it is fantastic. I hope everyone enjoys Jewel's "Spirit" as much as I am! Bear hugs and butterfly kisses to all! Well I am an official Aquacadet, part of the official Aquabat fan club (a ska band from Southern Cali.), and I recived a letter last week telling me that I am invited to the christmas aquabash, it is a concert, aquacadet gathering, costum part, and an opportunity to meet the band. The only way to get in is for me to show my I.D. at the door, no other price to pay. Now I ask yeah, can you see the potential of a fan club, imagin is Jewel did something like this, we could party with her, and each other. It was especially touching because I've been awfully sick having to go to hospital and things also doing my final exams. I've just been really depressed and losing faith. It was incredible that this was brought to my door, a reaffirmation of my faith by a beautiful person. It just made me feel so lucky and made me think about how you have to appreciate the life you've got, others can be a hell of a lot worse. Truly you guys who are apprehensive of spirit, I don't know why because it's the most beautiful album, I couldn't have asked for anything more. it's....just beyond words, it's so beautiful it reduces you to tears, truly. I don't quite know how to explain :) Anyway hope everyone enjoys it as much as me because this is jewel at her finest to date (not that she wasn't already out of this world)I won't say much because I don't want to trouble those who have to wait. He's playing out of a Fender too. Bowler Hat guy - Looks like a Martin to me. Bass guy - I could only guess. :-D Drum guy - Looks like a DW 4 piece drum set w/ Paiste cymbals Pianist guy - ?? I'm not that good at pin pointing pianos yet. The spot is supported by "World of Music", and they even say "on sale now"(???). Seems like they are trying very hard to do a lot of promo here in Europe for this album...possibly Jewel's breakthrough over here? I'm kinda sceptic, sorry. Thanks for reading this, Nico I walked in to my local record store, where I still can't get 'Hands' on Sunday and heard 'Kiss the Flame' playing all round the store. While new CD's by the likes of Seal had big displays, I had to search around and find 'Spirit'. Despite the fact that I live in Switzerland, I have MTV Northern Europe, and I haven't seen a sign of Hands being played or any adverts. By the way, despite the rave reviews for Spirit almost everywhere, 'Hands' failed to make the UK Top 40 singles chart on its first week. For what its worth, I think Spirit is a big step forward from Pieces of You and so far Hands, Down So Long, Do You and Absence of Fear seem the stand-out tracks. Jewel definitley is experementing with the "sound" of her music. I don't know if it was the producers that made her do it as a ploy to sell more albums, or if she is just trying something new. She did say that music was getting repetitive, and I wouldn't be surprized at all if she is just trying something new with her music. I'll try to make it short.... 1. Deep water.... a new sound that sounds better then before. 2. What's Simple..... Nice lyrics. I have to listen to it more often. Live a great song to play I think. 3. Hands.... enough said about it. Good single, not her strongest song on the album 4. Kiss The Flame.... Very catchy song. I like this one. Feels like it is familiar and like I heard it before. 5. Down So Long..... I was afraid Jewel introducing a band. This one and #11 did convince me that it is a strong move ! Fantastic song 6. Innocence maintained..... My all time favorite Jewel song. Not as good as acoustic but it simply can't do anything wrong to me. I had to get used to the sound although. 7. Jupiter.... Masterpiece Jewel !!! 8. Fat Boy.... We all know this one. Nothing new on it IMO. 9. Enter From The East.... Opening to a lot of european concerts last year. A song that cuts your emotions. Great song and deserves to be on this album. 10. Barcelona..... I did know it as "Let it rip, Let it Fly" but the rip-part has been changed to "let it loose". I think our spanish friends are delighted seeing Jewel honoured Barcelona with a song of this kind. 11. Life Uncommon... THE SONG of this album. What a thrill listening to it. It could have beenmade by Melissa Etheridge :-)) WOW. Yes, tight on #2 on my all time fav. J- list 12. Do You..... Nice song, a bit too much influence of the producer I think. 13. Absence of Fear... Great way of changing the arrangements. Love it. 14. Little Bird.... Yes, of course that this one is as a "thank you" on the album. Last question to all who possibly can answer it: Why do artist make hidden tracks with such large white space on the cd? Is it that the cd sets the total time a lot more against putting the song as a seperate track on it. I don't think people buy cd's looking at the total time. So, I like the album. Next week probably I will love it and next year I can't wait to see her in real life :-)) Thanks and see you soon in Europe or States.
