I watched the performance on SNL and I read a post about Jewel rolling her eyes. I watched the video over and over and I even asked the opinion of my brother and a friend; they didn't think she rolled her eyes at all. I don't think she did either, why don't people stop looking at every little thing. Just enjoy the music. all right, one more thing. this isn't about SNL. Have any of you noticed that on the Hands video when they lift that stuff up and uncover that guy. There is one shot for just a second or so where you can see a cross. I am not sure if that was the intent or if that just happened. I know I just told people not to look at every little thing. I was talking about how Jewel looks or acts. Leave her be. Anyway I just wanted to know if anyone else noticed the cross thing. Good fortune to all of you Troy ------------------------------ Date: 15 Nov 98 21:30:02 +0100 From: "Chris Groves" Subject: JEWEL FLOPS AGAIN Excuse me for interrupting your discussion of how impressive (or not) Jewel's thighs are, but I'd thought I'd let you guys know that once again Jewel's 'music' failed to impress the UK public. Hands didn't make it into the UK Top 40 singles chart which was released this evening. If only she'd shown more skin on This Morning... Chris. I felt it was more a sigh of relief that she had gotten through it, not that "Oh God im glad that finally over with" attitude you discribed. Chris "Dogs love me cause Im crazy sniffable" Beastie Boys, Hello Nasty : From: DKookyBaka@aol.com : At the end when they say there goodbyes, they said thanks to Jewel and then : about a second later she took a deep breathe and rolled her eyes. Like "whew, : thank god this is over!" Like a snotty, stuck-up little girl. Now maybe : someone in the audience shouted somehting unappropriate or something, I don't : know. But that's what really ticked me off. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Nov 1998 16:37:13 EST From: GitarAngel@aol.com Subject: Respect for Jewel I know that people are getting sick of the skirt issue, but i have to say my part. So, here goes... I know she told us she'd be experimenting and changing alot, but truth is.. i'm waiting for the next change she's gonna make. If she wanted to dress that way that night and maybe a few more appearences.. fine. but if this is gonna be her new image... there might be a problem. It's cool if she has different images and things so that people don't focus on her being a cute little folky farmgirl. Ther's more to her than that! But settling on this image might say things that she doesn't intend. Look at Mariah Carey!!!.... she lost alot of respect from many people b/c of her new image. When you see someone performing like that you tend to think they're all about the image and selling sex and the music gets overshadowed. That's what i think this whole skirt thing is really about! & I don't think that's what Jewel wants to say when she walks up in front of her fans. I'm hoping it's her choice and not some big exec. decision for them to get more money. I agree that everyone here has a right to an opinion and to voice it at will, but it almost become a mob mentality, with everyone coming out of the woodwork (I guess that includes me). Some of the messages do nothing but repeat the sentiments of another(if mine repeats your sentiments, I apologize:)), usually bashing her attire. Now my opinion on the situation (though it seems ridiculous to analyze it this much): 1. Jewel is an adult. Jewel is a performer. 2. Though I missed the performance, I'm sure she was respectable, wearing clothes that suit her fashion. 3. I'm sure we've all seen lewder things: Madonna, Marilyn Manson, need I say more? 4. LISTEN TO THE MUSIC. ENJOY THE PERFORMANCE. 5. If she acted goofy, or danced out of what you are used to seeing her do, SO WHAT. If you've seen the posts of Mr BB, or know what her schedule is like, you should understand why she probably needs to let her hair down and have fun, after all, don't we all deserve to have fun. 6. Jewel is a person, not a god or an idol. Ease off on her. I hope she doesn't get to see a lot of the posts that refer to her as "slutty in that skirt", though I'd bet she would get over it fairly quickly. As for her being a role model, I think her life, her beliefs, and the obstacles she has overcome are amazing and inspiring. 7. As far as clothing goes, if it must be analyzed: Jewel, like many of the other prominent female performers today, presents a self determined character. She shows us that she is not bound by the traditional constraints of women. She, and no one else is in charge of her sexuality and expression thereof. She is an empowered woman. Does that sound bad? 8. The affects on children: No, your young daughter probably should not be wearing a miniskirt, but instead of sheltering your children from the world, try to teach them age-appropriate values, and encourage them to be inspired by art, instead of emulating it. On a lighter note: I'm excited that the album comes out on Tuesday (especially since I still have yet to either see the video of hands or hear any complete songs). I am jealous of everyone that gets to go to the MTV thing, I'm sure it will be a blast. I look forward to hearing about it. Also: I'm not sure yet, but I may have some space on my server for a Jewel site if someone has a cool idea for one that might require asp, FrontPage extensions, or whatever, I can do it. You provide the code, I'll provide the space. Let me know if you have a good idea, and I'll see what I can do. Love Angels, Rusty ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Nov 1998 17:29:26 EST From: Jesapeet@aol.com Subject: Redirect about SNL and other things Ok, hmm, I think I need to take some time and explain how I feel about the Jewel. Alright, Jewel has changed from what I first found enticing about her. When I first saw Jewel . . . I thought "what a doll! She doesn't have to glamourize herself to be noticed" I thought that was so cool, and it proved a point. Although she has changed her clothing style and makeup, I still have much respect for her beautiful voice, lyrics, and views on life, etc. If her short skirt will divert people from enjoying her music and being a respectful fan of hers . . . then they really aren't a true fan. Jewel was raised very different from most people. She did not have all the things most children had, she had to work very very hard. So I feel she does deserve to be a glamour girl if that is what she wants. Change can be good! If this change makes Jewel feel more herself, more power to her. God forbid! jewel doesn't take herself half as seriously as any one of you! i'm sure when we see her next she'll wear something closer to a burlap sack than this last outfit, and i'm sure that this thread will pass until the next time she decides (gasp!) not to do exactly what some of us think she should. i value everybody's opinions and all, but i mean, seriously! need i remind you that jewel was not a bona fide rock star until the second video for you were meant for me came out? yeah, the one starring her neck and boobs and steve practically giving her a hickey. she is a sex symbol. she is sexy. don't pretend like she's letting you down for simply being herself. i have a hunch that we haven't even seen the half of jewel yet, and i can't wait to learn more about her. no one is static, and if yesterday she felt like trying something new, like being naked jewel, then so be it. at least she was enjoying herself. remember when she was on leno after the superbowl and sounded like she was giving up on music all together? keep in mind that we haven't lost her - she's finally gotten up the courage to give us even more of herself than before; don't do this every time she tries something different. let her fly, and if she falls, well it's her own ass. all we do is discourage her from letting us, her fans, in on her heart. i know it was just a skirt, but i bet most of us never knew there was this fun, sexy jewel in there. and now we see there is. anyway, i'm going back to the non-posting people's corner now. sorry i came out twice in 24 hours. later... sam ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Nov 1998 18:22:43 -0600 From: cmgordon2@juno.com (Courtney M Gordon) Subject: lyrics Can somebody please send me the lyrics to "Race Car Driver" and "Sometimes it be that way"?
