Although I haven't gotten a chance to see SNL with Jewel on it I have gotten a chance to read all of your responses towards it on the digest. I think that whoever is complaining about what Jewel was wearing should stop. I mean whoever was it is obvious that all they were concentrating on was what Jewel was wearing not her performance of "Hand's" and "Down So Long". Also, maybe Jewel just wanted to let loose and have a little fun! Being a girl myself I can see if that is the case what she means! But, I will stop boring you. Bye! After every time Jewel is on a TV show or whatever the same thing always happens.... First everybody throws out their opinion, then people start talking about the meanings of fans and how we shouldn't criticize Jewel for whatever people were critcizing her for (like what she wears). After that there is a whole stream of "enough already!" posts. My point? I just hope that we don't go through this cycle every time we're going to see Jewel perform on TV.... - -Jen ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Nov 1998 15:05:54 EST From: DKookyBaka@aol.com Subject: Jewel on SNL (this is not about the skirt!) Ok, now I have to admit, the skirt did upset me a bit, but this isn't what the post is about. Now, is it just me or did it seem to look like Jewel has gained some weight? I was watchig it with a friend of mine and we both thought it looked that way. Her legs especially. Now, onto the thing that really upset me. At the end when they say there goodbyes, they said thanks to Jewel and then about a second later she took a deep breathe and rolled her eyes. Like "whew, thank god this is over!" Like a snotty, stuck-up little girl. Now maybe someone in the audience shouted somehting unappropriate or something, I don't know. But that's what really ticked me off. Well, that's all i'm gonna say. Lesley P.S. flame me if you want, i don't care. Hey I just want to say that I don't really give a shit if Jewel wears a short skirt! How many women who are famous haven't? Well, except the old ones? Jewel is 24 for god's sakes, she's bound to want to try on a few different kinds of clothes!! You're acting as if she is too old and mature to wear a short skirt. And who are you to tell Jewel what to wear or not? And someone wrote in saying how shocked they were at how "shallow" people are if they think that Jewel wearing a short skirt is a good thing. Jewel is very sexy, and you're going to have to accept that straight men and lesbains are gonna find her very atractive! It's NATURAL to find someone this stunning attractive and sexy! Becuase, frankly, she is sexy! And as for her dancing, I want to know why it matters that she's swinging her hips a little? It just shows how catchy she finds her own song! Ok, Jewel looked amazing. Jewel's voice sounded amazing And Jewel did at least play guitar to one song! I'm just curious, when did Jewel get this guitar? Has she named it? What kind is it? Etc. Does anyone know? Mr.BB? I had kinda expected a version of hands that would bring me tears, not a version that would make me want to get up and to that little leg-shuffle-tip-toe-stomp thing but oh well, it was still a loveley version. One more thing, did anyone else kinda get the feeling that with this preformance Jewel was trying to dispell the horrible guitar/yodelling/moaning about being homeless image that that horrible actress tried to portray in that terrible skit a while back? The spot is supported by "World of Music", and they even say "on sale now"(???). Seems like they are trying very hard to do a lot of promo here in Europe for this album...possibly Jewel's breakthrough over here? I'm kinda sceptic, sorry. What it all boils down to is that Jewel si a sex symbol. She will always be one. Not only does she have incredible innner beauty, she is absoulutly gorgous. Plus, most people in the spotlight are kinda expected to a certain point to dress sexy and I indeed say, she did that very well... Being a teenage boy though, I can't say I minded though.... ~ Ben ~Angel of the Ocean~ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Nov 1998 15:27:38 EST From: ChicDrumer@aol.com Subject: SNL Please read Please dont take offence with what im about to say, but SHUT UP ABOUT THE FREAKIN' SKIRT! I mean you act like she has to be perfect, like she has to wear what you want. She doesn't wear her close to impress you guys or anyone else. She wears what she wants to because she wants to. And who cares if your offended by her wearing a short skirt? You people shouldnt be so judgemental. And who cares if her wearing a short skirt upest you. At least she wasn't naked. (Although you act like she was) Anyways thats all i have to say. Dont take offence to that, and that message was only for people who gave negative comments about the skirt. Thats all! Shannon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Nov 1998 15:20:38 -0500 From: Mike Schlosser Subject: SNL Stuff I think people are missing the point of last nights performance, let's recap: 1) Jewel got on stage and looked like she had a good time and there is NOTHING wrong with that. 2) Jewel probably gets asked the same tired questions everyday when she's making 'appearances' anytime she gets to 'let her hair down' is fine...(You really think she is looking forward to singing 'Hands' five times on national television??) 3) It's not like she came out there drunk or extremely high or something she just had FUN and guys is this really the first time we have seen a black mini-skirt?? While 'Hands' will never be my favorite song I thought she performed it quite well and if that makes jewel some money then that's a positive aspect... 'Been Down So Long' simply ROCKED and I look forward to this with much excitement... As for jewel being a role model for children and she needs to conduct herself accordingly, well to put it bluntly YOU need to be a role model for your children, not some person they saw for 7 minutes and 21 seconds on SNL... If your children are old enough to be up that late thery are probably watching porn anyway right?? After all the music is the most important aspect... Feel free to send me any responses.... - --Mike ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Nov 1998 15:34:07 EST From: MAXMOUZE@aol.com Subject: Re: yet another SNL comment In a message dated 11/15/98 12:30:13 PM Pacific Standard Time, gregthomaswhite@hotmail.com writes: << One more thing, did anyone else kinda get the feeling that with this preformance Jewel was trying to dispell the horrible guitar/yodelling/moaning about being homeless image that that horrible actress tried to portray in that terrible skit a while back? >> Oh I didn't think about that. Actually I forgot about the living in the van thing and even the yodeling thing. It's been a long time since I have been really into Jewel and now all I can think of is "Hands". But yeah Ana Gasteyer - who actually is one of my favorite actresses (because of Cinder Calhoun and the like) - did make fun of her but I don't think Jewel would have taken it to heart too much if she ended up finding out about it. Nah, it wasn't really an eye roll in my opinion (I went to the tape a few times). It was the ol' "shy Jewel having a difficult time handling compliments/applause". She's really a shy gal from what all I can see. It's hard to explain in print, but she often seems to acknowledge applause, compliments and greetings with that same neck/head movement/nod, sometimes with a deep breath...kind of a head-curtsy. I see it all the time on TV....also, she did it the first time I met her in person at JewelStock, when she arrived at the theatre for band auditions.....a few of us were outside when she arrived, we said hi and she did the ol' head-curtsy/"hi" with a small hand wave. Just seemed to be a classic shy moment. Plus, I got to spend a little time talking with her those two days in Bearsville, and she was just totally shy at times. (and we all know that shyness can, at times come across wrong) Mike :-) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Nov 1998 15:43:50 EST From: JefffSmith@aol.com Subject: Boston Globe review of Spirit http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe/globehtml/319/Jewel_writes_songs_of_innocence .shtml Jewel writes songs of innocence By Steve Morse, Globe Staff, 11/15/98 It's a big leap from living in your van as a teenager to being the moral conscience of your generation. Yet that's the path being carved by the quietly ambitious, unashamedly idealistic Jewel; the Alaskan-born singer-songwriter whose debut album sold 8 million copies and made her an icon to wandering youth. Jewel wrote that debut, ''Pieces of You,'' as a 19-year-old who had moved from Alaska to an itinerant life in San Diego. The album produced three huge hit singles: ''You Were Meant for Me,'' ''Who Will Save Your Soul,'' and ''Foolish Games.'' Now 24, Jewel returns Tuesday with ''Spirit,'' a softly understated, beguilingly beautiful folk record that blends an ecumenical spirituality with a timeless innocence that makes you wonder how the marketplace will react to it. Jewel's vulnerabilities are revealed, but so are her strengths and commitments to the love, grace, and peace ethic. A focal track is ''Innocence Maintained,'' in which Jewel intones: ''We've made houses for hatred/It's time we made a place where people's souls may be seen and made safe/Be careful with each other ... for innocence can't be lost, it just needs to be maintained.'' In many hands, Jewel's moralizing might seem corny, but she invests this song and others with a stunning calm. As she told Billboard, ''I wanted to write a record that was an antidote to all the things that made me worry in the world, so that it's comforting somehow.'' She succeeded, for the new record goes right to the heart. ''We've compromised our pride and sacrificed our health/We have to demand more not of each other/But more from ourselves,'' she sings in the opening tune, 'Deep Water.'' Radio singles may be few and far between this time, though ''Hands'' is working its way up the charts with the life-affirming thought: ''In the end only kindness matters ... We are God's eyes, God's hands, God's mind.'' This may not make the album go ka-ching at the cash registers, but it earns respect. This album is meant to be listened to as a whole. Gently flowing acoustic guitar, played by former Bostonian Jude Cole, (who also has a fine new solo disc out), anchors these fragile, painterly melodies. Other guests include Ednaswap bassist Paul Bushnell, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, Afro-Cuban percussionist Luis Conte, pedal steel guitarist Marty Rifkin, and drummer Brian Macleod. Jewel herself only plays guitar on two tracks, preferring to concentrate on her voice. It has matured and deepened, yet is still capable of a magnificent falsetto on ''Enter from the East,'' an erotic, cello-limned tune where she sings, ''I must have you all to myself/Feel the full weight of your skin.'' A similarly light and airy eroticism turns up on ''Jupiter.'' While Jewel is searching for love, we soon learn it's a love both on the earthy and the spiritual planes. In the elegiac ''Barcelona,'' with Flea adding a subtle bass line, she sings, ''I'm afraid I am alone/Won't somebody please hold me, release me, show me the meaning of mercy.'' Later, in the same song, she asks, ''God, won't you please hold me, release me?'' Above all, these songs are unerringly pretty. Jewel even adds a protest song in ''Life Uncommon,'' and that, too, is sung so prettily that you won't want to rush the barricades after all. Rather, this album makes you want to sit back, contemplate life, and be glad that an artist as compelling as Jewel is willing to bare her soul, in spite of a possible backlash against such idealism.
