It reminded me of Courtney Love! Those 2 should hook up and do a project! Jewel looked very beautiful, as always, in her leather skirt! Actually, i had a female model friend watching with me and she said that she saw that outfit and it is very much top of the line! Every live performance Jewel has done that i've heard has been awesome and this definetly no exception! She looked like she was having fun on stage and that's what it's all about! 1 to 10 rating i gave it a ... 8.5! ** Scott S.** -Big Sexy Angel "I'M MOVIN' ON!" -Mya http://homepage.usr.com/b/breezemaker ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Nov 1998 00:03:03 PST From: "Melissa Skingley" Subject: The one and only on SNL! Hey there Angels, I'm not one to post often but I thought this was a topic I'd like to discuss. First of all I have to say, Jewel, though different than usual was, (as always) amazing on SNL tonight. I didn't mind enduring the usual agonizing, unfunny sketches in between. (I appologize if I offend) I was a little shocked by the outfit and the first thing I thought was Mariah Carey and the concept of sudden new freedom, or whatever. Also, It's not often that I've seen her dance about the way she did, but I was entertained she looked happy and that's all that matters. I knew very well that this list would be flooded with comments and cynicism about this performance. Well, my overall point is.... Jewel is an amazing talent and if she has the confidence to change even just a little after her last success, and do what she wants to do. then, all power to her. Sorry for the wasted time you spent reading my own personal view of this and thanx for reading if you did. But now it is 2am and my words are starting to make less and less sense to me so, Bye4now Love Melissa "The Aspiring Angel" " It's nice to be liked, but it's better by far to get payed" ... .Liz Phair. Tonight I noticed the same 3 things you did: 1. That short short short did i mention short skirt 2. The fact she actually did dance to the beat a bit, I have never seen her do that before. This is weird for the 'conservative' (I guess that is the word to use.) Jewel. 3. This is also the first time I ever saw her with an electric guitar. Of course it is her choice what she wants to wear, but I hope this short skirt is just a phase or outfit experiment....It didn't give me good vibes. A lot of people respect her for being female and not flaunting it like most women do today in the industry. First of all her outfit was interesting to say the least. Next I definitely agree that Hands is not a song that lends itself well to live performance. I too noticed that Jewel looks odd without having a guitar over her shoulder, I noticed it on Unplugged during Foolish Games as well. I think that she just doesn't know what to do with herself when she's not playing guitar (this could also explain her dancing around). Unfortunately I wasn't expecting a second song so I changed the channel after hands was over so I missed "Down So Long". Oh well I guess I'll have to wait till Tuesday to hear it (woohoo 2 more days) Eric Daniels Guitar Loving Angel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Nov 1998 02:26:43 -0600 (CST) From: Sam Michael Megally Subject: SNL and the skirt people, well, i knew this was going to be a huge subject, at least until tuesday when we see her again, but not like 2 hours after the show ended! i mean, really! anyway, first off i am a guy. secondly, the first impression i got of jewel's "look" was "damn, she must have talked to mariah carey's stylist." then hands was over and they went to commercial break. i picked my jaw up off the floor, wiped the drool off of it, and decided that not only has jewel's music grown up, but so has our little jewel. and mama is hot! i have to say that maybe the eda's who didn't think hands was that good live were trying too hard to see her panties and forgot to listen to her voice. she was great. and down so long was even better. like the one eda said, the rockfest outfit was skimpier, i was there (!!!) and she got more than her share of "show your tits!" i think maybe the look was a little too glam for saturday night live. i mean, after the crap alanis wore a couple of weeks ago, jewel could have gone on in a t-shirt and some ratty jeans and looked better than her. well, jewel always has looked better than her. jewel was still classy even though you could almost see her ass (believe me, i was looking). i used to want to fall in love with her, now i want to fall in love with her and have sex with her, too. well, i've always wanted to have sex with her and fall in love with her, but now i have something i'd like her to model for me. to sum it up: jewel is back, and the world is gonna notice! later... sam from dallas the jewel-loving angel ps. how is she supposed to "get down on her knees and pray" with a hemline like that? she'll flash the priest! pps. i'm probably taking this a little less seriously than a lot of you guys. i mean, come on! it's just a little piece of leather! a LITTLE piece, at that. :-)- (that's the drool hanging off my lip.) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Nov 1998 03:57:04 EST From: Reecord2@aol.com Subject: Jewel on SNL Hey EDAs! Wow, it's been, like forever since my last post! Tsk tsk...anyways, I saw Jewel on SNL, and it was great! First she sang Hands, and that was really good. Then, she pulled out the old guitar for Been Down So Long, and that was a really really good song! Just makes me even more anxious for Spirit to come out! :-) ~~Richard The Formerly El Niño Drenched Angel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Nov 1998 00:50:55 -0800 From: "Tim S." Subject: SNL comments.. Amazingly good performance of the song. That is all that should matter to you angels. If you listen to jewel because of the music she makes don't be concerned with what she was wearing. It doesn't matter as long as she makes the music and she did in spades tonight. Let it go because its not important. Tim __________________________________________________________ "Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. Did I mention Jewel was amazing on SNL? Well, she was! And from a heterosexual female's point of view, Jewel looked damn good in that outfit! I felt proud to be a Jewel fan. I loved the way she was groovin out, sorta reminded me of, a Fiona dance but not quite. Whatever Oh, and about the whole Mariah Comparison... (When I was a kid Mariah was my fave) she has one of the best voices in the world), but I can't help but hate the way she dresses. anyway, what I'm trying to say is, Jewel's look wasn't half as bad. For one thing you couldn't see up her skirt. I'm almost certain it had some sort of shorts contraption and the top looked great. Hey, if ya got it, flaunt it! lol Well, that's about all I have to say. Sorry to bug you about this ridiculous topic yet again. I know that most of you are still waiting for the new album spirit and don’t want to speak of anything else. Anyway I’m not going to speak of this wonderful album but of you . I have to choose a subject to do 3 oral presentations (10mn, 20mn and then 30mn ) and a 50 page work. My first presentation is very soon and I need a subject ! So I’m thinking of doing something like : “ Jewel an internet icon” in witch I’ll study her history, work, and her presence on the net . So I’ve got some questions : * How old are you and what is the average age of EDAs ? * Who’s Jewel for you ? ( answer using words like : human, honest, sincere … ) * Could you give me a list of her awards * What your favourite song ? * Did you think she had open a new way in music industry ? * Jewel fellow music lover’s are more men or women ? * Have you got a personal page build for Jewel ? Keep in mind that answering my ( one or more ) questions will really help me. If you just want to say me good luck ( I will need ) my first presentation is the 27 November . Take care, English Learning Angel.. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* " We are not separate from Spirit, We are in it " Plotinus. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Nov 1998 05:03:29 EST From: Sean35RL@aol.com Subject: (please read) SNL, the skirt, and sluttiness used to sell records OK, didn't see Jewel on SNL(but by reading the reviews on this list I've gotten the drift) and I agree that she should be above such shallow and premeditated tactics which are clearly beneath her, on the Mariah Carey level and the level of other female artists who do not have the talent to be stars so they have to dress slutty. But.... NOW, that said, here's my main point. A woman's appearance has NOTHING to do with her intelligence or level of talent. Women will NEVER be equal until we stop proliferating and keeping alive the ridiculous notion that it is not possible for a woman to be both intelligent and sexual. People assume that if a woman has a nice body and wants to show it off then she must have no brain. Any woman with a brain then must be ugly and non-sexual. That is the problem. As a feminist I felt compelled to bring this issue up after reading so many judgmental, condemning posts about Jewel's attire on SNL. For a woman to "respectable" she has to be a desexualized, passionless creature? Why can't a female lawyer, completely independent, a brilliant mind, why can't she appear nude in Playboy and not be thought of as anything less, not be judged? Women can be vixens AND violinists, women can be scholars AND sexpots, all in the same woman. In her most recent book Elizabeth Wurtzel(one of my fave "femininst" authors) has some brilliant things to say about this subject. I'll just paraphrase the two that really stuck in my head. The first is in talking about how women are forced to be less sexual in order to be considered serious. She says that to assume that posing nude, for instance, is inconsistent with being a dynamic leader or a credible manager or a serious scholar is to say that somehow that because Thomas Jefferson had sex with a slave the Declaration of Indepedence is a less valuable document, or that since Wilt Chamberlain had sex with thousands of women he is somehow not a good basketball player.(Jewel wearing a tight miniskirt does not devalue her as a musician.) Point being, one has nothing to do with the other. Her second brilliant statement connects with the first. She is talking about politics in this nation and she says that as long as the only women on the president's cabinet are women like Donna Shalala and Janet Reno(ugly women, unthreateningly safe) then the cabinet is still half-empty, women are not really being represented at all. Later, Sean Hooks "No DOES NOT always mean no. It does, often enough, mean: I'm not easy, try a little harder, or: I want to but don't think I'm a slut, or: I really do want to, but I'm uncomfotable with the enormity of my sexual desires, so only if you force me will I be able to ignore my guilt." - -Elizabeth Wurtzel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Nov 1998 05:51:09 EST From: Klingon378@aol.com Subject: Saturday Night Live I saw Jewel on SNL, and thought the performance was great! So, I was really impressed by jewel's ability to incorporate her new disco moves into the performance of "Hands". I thought they went along with the message of "Hands", you know the song about God and spirituality...that song always made me want to busta move like Jewel was doing. I was torn between which trash to watch .....jerry springer, howard stern spanking some girl with a fish, or jewel in leather doin' a little dance and makin' a little love. I chose the latter. The songs were good and the band was cool, for that matter Jewel really wasn't that bad, it's just fun to make fun...she sets herself up for critisim.
