Several EDAs have posted about the damage Hurricane Mitch has caused in Central America. Over 10,000 are reported dead, and many more left homeless and hungry. Honduras was the worst hit, with 6,000 dead and over 300 schools destroyed. Many of the countries' leaders have stated that they have been set back AT LEAST 50 YEARS by the disaster. How can we help? While hands-on volunteer help is near impossible for most of us, supplies can be sent through humanitarian or disaster relief organizations. The American Red Cross is an established group to work through. Call 1-800-HELP-NOW to make a credit card pledge, or they can take donations online. The URL is: http://www.redcross.org/donate/donate-now.html EDA Jack Snyder also suggested another excellent method of helping. Here's his e-mail as it was posted to The EveryDay Angels Foundation mailing list today: >One place to donate is: > American Friends Service Committee > 1501 Cherry Street > Philadelphia PA 19102 > (MC/VISA toll-free 1-888-588-2372 (ext 1)) > (9 am - 5pm Eastern) >You can also donate recovery kits (new items only) >2 bars of soap >6 candles >two cloth diapers & pins >and/or an article of infant clothing >pack in clear plastic zip lock bag no larger than 12" by 12" >send to AFSC/EMAP, 1501 Cherry St., Phila PA 19102 >I know AFSC - it is a Quaker service organization with programs in over 20 >countries around the world and in various locations around the US. I >volunteer as a member of the Corporation and on the New England region >program committee overseeing programs in the New England area. >AFSC has a program that was doing development work in Honduras. Staff >there are now working on relief efforts. AFSC has been doing this type of >work since 1917. AFSC staff work hard to make sure that the donations are >translated into assistance for those in need as quickly as possible - one >way is to purchase goods locally as much as possible. >For more info, check out the AFSC Web Site - www.afsc.org/mitch.htm There are some folks in serious need of help tonight, and they aren't in a music video. Anyone who can, please help.
