I just got the new Alanis album today and it's destined to break records. One of the best albums I've heard. My first thought was to look in HMV but as always they disappointed me. But all was not lost and sanity saved the day. I love the acoustic version of 'Enter from the east' and 'Innocence Maintained' was a little different but I'm sure after a few listens it will become a favourite. I hate to judge at this early stage especially as Pieces Of You had to grow on me in the beginning too. Don't despair angels, even if this is a change in the Jewel we knew we owe it to give her new direction and experiments a chance. So contact your local Warner Music office and start asking for photo's posters, singles, whatever they have in stock. She no longer tours with it though because its a bit more delicate than her other guitars & doesn't travel well. This issue came up about a year ago when a few people saw blue guitars displayed in various Hard Rock Cafe's as belonging to Jewel. Turns out they were simply autographed by Jewel & put on display & NOT "Big Blue" which has customized fretwork, artwork on the back & sits safely in Jewel's home. There are a few Jewel mentions in this week's Music Week (UK Music Trade Magazine). Firstly there's a full page ad for the new album, this is similar to the one in this month's Q magazine but a little larger. Secondly there is this short review of Spirit... JEWEL: Spirit (Atlantic 756 782 9502). With Hands Jewel's next single, released on November 9 now on Radio One's As Featured list, it would appear that the time is right for this Alaskan-born singer/songwriter. The songs are strong and sensual, carried by Jewel's beautiful crystal-clear voice. If anyone deserves to repeat their domestic success over here, then surely it is this talented singer. And finally, Jewel finally makes it into the UK Airplay chart top 50. The chart published in Music Week, for the week 25 Oct 98 to 1 Nov 98, places Hands at number 45. However this isn't all good news, the airplay chart is based on the airplay of about 70 UK radio stations monitored 24 hours a day for a week. In the week listed, Hands was played a total of just 32 times! As the chart is based on the total audience that each record receives then I would guess most of these plays were on BBC Radio 2, which has the largest radio audience in the UK; Hands is currently on their A-playlist. I just saw the video for "Hands" for the first time and just had to write the list. First off, excellent video. It was literally one of the best videos I've ever seen. Kudos to the director (whose name I missed). And of course, "Hands" is an amazing song, signalling such an immense change from earlier material; it's great. It's interesting to me how it will fit in with the rest of the tracks on Spirit... can't wait until November 17. So did anyone notice the video really fitting in with Jewel's angel views? I really thought that it compared her to an angel. Especially when she enters the building and stands over the frightened children. Everything about it pushed the idea; the upward perspective on her definitely placing the benevolently smiling Jewel above the horrified children both literally and metaphorically.
