Subject: Vetaran EDA's opinion of Hands Hey all....I just got this letter from a friend who was on the Jewel list about a year ago...and was quite a diehard Jewel fan as well. She's since left the list, for reasons beyond her control, but I asked her recently what she thought about Hands...if she had even heard it or not...and here's her comment about it.... - ----------------------------- >yeah, i heard the song, and i think she's selling out. I have a > quotation of hers somewhere in a magazine saying that she > hates being one of those people with the crappy love > songs...and she goes and does it again! > I'll buy the album...but i'll wait until it is cheap. Maybe it's just > because I hate >hearing her say she reads all these great authors, and then > you can't find >any of that in her work. It annoys me. Oh well. - ------------------------------ Looks like this opinion is becoming more popular as time goes on. I saw the video for it this morning on MTV...at 6:00am. Nice time slot. Can't say much about it, cause like the video, there's not much to say. Plain and simple. Very low budget I imagine. And for someone with the money Jewel has, I'm surprised a little more creativity didn't get put into it. Maybe she's saving that for her next single, or the one after, or the one after, or the one after. She looked alright, but different. Sort of that natural Bo Derek type look going on. Not sure what it was that was different, maybe less eye makeup. Longer hair. She just looked like another person basically. But still pretty. I just wish there was a little more effort put into the video. Yes, I got the message, but still. Compared to Foolish Games and YWMFM, even WWSYS, the overall effect just wasn't there. Actually, to describe it in one word..."depressing". Black, fire, burn, trapped, danger. Are these "happy" things? Yet, these words are all evident in her video. Hmmm. With a song like Hands, the lyrics and all, I could have thought of some really cool stuff for her to do with the video. So many options were there for her. Oh well. At least it's another video. But this one won't get her any MTV Video awards for sure. I have also seen a bit of the video and did not like it. Hearing the song was much better, basically because I wasnt distracted from listening to what she was saying. And with Hands, I am of a different opinion than some. While I do think that it was over produced(and this is IMHO, I always liked her more simplified acoustic style), I do think it was done well. I do think she has matured in her vocals as well, ie she is controlling her highs and lows well. Did anyone else notice a slight gaelic or irish lilt to the song? Not in terms of speaking, but more along the lines of how the sound rolled/ accenting. But that might have been my ears hearing things. The video on the other, I got distracted by. It just hit me wrong. I couldnt get over the images flowing thru. The beauty of the song was overwhelmed by the horrific and saddening images flowing across the screen. But again that is just IMHO. Now remember that is just one person opinion and is not an overall turning away from Jewel. Just an observation. It mentions Jewel in two spots. Mike (who's wondering how they come up with these predicted sales figures) ** Super Tuesday clogged with albums ** Expect pop superstars to sell records and set records with dizzying efficiency when music's fall schedule peaks on Nov. 17, the mightiest release date in memory. Dubbed Super Tuesday, the date marks the arrival of albums by Garth Brooks, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Method Man, Ice Cube, Jewel, Offspring, Seal, Sublime, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and the Geto Boys. Three Prince of Egypt soundtracks, including one bearing the Houston/Carey duet When You Believe, also enter the fray. Insiders expect sales of those debuts to exceed 3 million copies the first week. Conceivably, debuts could fill the Billboard Top 10, breaking a record set last month when debuts held six slots. Brooks, whose six-CD The Limited Series registered sales of 372,000 copies in its first week earlier this year, is expected to crush the competition. Retailers handicapping Super Tuesday arrivals in Hits projected first-week sales of 1.1 million copies for Garth Brooks: Double Live. It gets a high-profile launch at the 2,400-store Wal-Mart chain, which offers the two-disc set for $13.98. "At that price, you'll get people who don't normally buy records," says Mike Shalett, chief of SoundScan, which has tabulated sales data since 1991. It's likely that Brooks' opening-week sales will not only surpass the 1998 record of 681,570 set by the Beastie Boys' Hello Nasty, but also eclipse the all-time high of 950,378 set by Pearl Jam's Vs. in 1993. The retail guesswork places Method Man second with 273,000 copies, followed by Houston (234,000), Jewel (233,000) and Carey (209,000). "Nobody knows what's going to happen with so much being brought into the marketplace," Shalett says. Though the glut could hurt individual potential, Shalett predicts a 25-33% spike in sales for the week for a total "in the neighborhood of 13 to 15 million units." "It's a formidable lineup," agrees Geoff Mayfield, Billboard's director of charts. "The unanswered question is: When you throw this much out there, how many things can the consumer react to at once?" If optimistic predictions are met, the season's superstar glut could shatter another record in December: one-week total sales of nearly 41 million units set the week before Christmas in 1995, when The Bodyguard and the Beatles' Anthology Vol. 1 ruled the chart.
