[Sean35RL@aol.com] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 24 Oct 1998 21:52:06 PDT From: "Scott Evans" Subject: Jewel mention in album review I've been hearing great things about this singer Rebekkah, which I've never heard...so I went to CDNow to hear some sound clips (which by the way is featuring Spirit on its front page), which lead me to read a review from Rolling Stone which had a mention of Jewel in it...I don't know if anyone's mentioned this before but here's the part with Jewel: Rebekah -- one name only, please -- has already been called the black Jewel. Her music isn't as bad as that condescending, disingenuous appellation implies. But it comes close. As with Jewel, every note Rebekah sings comes out hopelessly overwrought, giving an emotional one-dimensionality to confessionals like "I Wish I Could Believe Me." And the dance beats that underpin "Hey Genius" are a little too calculatedly Alanis Morissette for their own good -- this being 1998, though, Rebekah swaps hip-hop grooves for drum-and-bass rhythms. sCoTt eVaNs ThE SuPpOsEd FoRmEr InFaTuAtIoN AnGeL AOL IM: EDAScott I will gather myself around my faith For light does darkness most fear -JeWeL ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Oct 1998 03:29:12 EST From: Stevie3103@aol.com Subject: Ordering Spirit From Atlantic Does anyone know if we order directly from Atlantic, there will be some special "thing" that comes in the package? Or new info about her short European tour this week. Will it all happen, and will she come to Holland to do some promotional work for Hands ? i am just curious as i haven't been reading any news about Jewel. In Holland it's just 5 days before Hands will be released. And still 20 days before the release of Spirt. i just read at the official recordlabel of Jewel http://www.atlanticrecords.com that the new video will be premiered next week. Does Mike or Alan know if this will be an international premiere. So for example will MTV Europe, or other major musicstations in every country in Europe broadcast this ? And is there something to tell about this new video. I wondered if Jewel maybe have a message for all us EDA 's ??? Some nice comments , or something else ? greetings, michiel http://members.xoom.com/Jewelimpala/index.html a dutch tribute site to Jewel - a beautiful angel from alaska ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Oct 1998 00:29:19 +1000 From: Louise Subject: An interesting coincidence with new album Hey my Angel pals, I was just reading one of the mags we get here in OZ called Dolly and saw on their calender bit that November 16th says "Be kind and understanding today 'cos it's International Day of Tolerance" I just thought that was a cool coincidence because here in OZ, Jewel's album 'Sprit' comes out on the 16th and Jewel is always talking about kindness and tolerance and stuff like that. I just wanted to update that this week Jewel's new single "Hands" is up 7 to #15 on Billboard's Adult TOP 40 and it's just below Shawn Mullins' "Lullaby" which IMO totally kicks ass and is much better than Hands even though I think the latter is beautiful! - -- Have fun and stay beautiful Dr. RomeAntic, an angel with the worst stroke of luck "But as the scenery grows, I see in different lights The shades and shadows undulate in my perception My feelings swell and stretch, I see from greater hights I realize what I am now too smart to mention - to you" Fiona Apple/Never Is A Promise/Tidal Catch Dr. RomeAntic's cyber image @ http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Metro/2009 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Oct 1998 10:28:46 -0600 From: jessicaboyd@juno.com (Jessica Lyn Boyd) Subject: Love Me Just Leave Me Alone Can anyone tell me how I can get a hold of "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone?" I watch Saturday Night Live all of the time, and a year or two ago the musical guests, which a lot of you probably know, the musical guests stopped getting to sing two of their songs and instead got to sing only one. Well, I was watching last night's SNL with Ben Stiller and Alanis Morissette and she got to sing two songs ("Thank U" and "Baba"), which either means that the show is allowing two songs by the musical guest again or they made an exception for Alanis Morissette - being that she's one of the most successful singers ever. Hopefully, though, they are allowing two songs again, so that we will get to hear Jewel sing a couple of the new songs (or one of her old songs with a new arrangement or whatever). Just a thought. My dad was at the World Series game the other night with work (He works for PolyGram Entertainment) and this guy was sitting in front of him and one of his co-workers. So they got to talking with the guy and from what my dad could tell the guy was a recording artist, but it wasn't anyone he recognized. Well after the game, my dad, still wondering hard who the guy was that they had talked to throughout the game asked his friend who the guy was. The guy replied "He writes songs with Jewel and used to go out with her. His name's Steve Poltz" Immediately me dad knew who he was talking about because he knows i'm obsessed with Jewel (So of course he knows who Steve is, he just didn't recognize him) So the next day my dad was at the airport and guess whos there? Steve. So my dad went up to him and said "I usually don't do this, but you have to sign an autograph for my daughter." So now i got his autograph. Kewl huh? Can't wait till i get Jewel's though.(he he) - -Kristina ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Oct 1998 11:15:16 +0800 From: ima@skyinet.net Subject: i'm new here Hey there. i'm new to the list. my name is Reg and i live in the Philippines, but lived in NY for 17 years. i'm a huge jewel fan because i love her music and i like her from what she shows us on interviews. i'm also play a bit of the guitar and sing, so she is a big influence on me. it's nice to be in contact with people that love her as much as i do. i hope to hear about what jewel is doing, since we don't hear a lot about her here. i just wanted to introduce myself. i'm looking forward to meeting some of you, since i'm also on the natalie merchant list, and i met a lot of great people with the same interests as me, and it's great. later! reg ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Oct 1998 22:49:09 EST From: Sean35RL@aol.com Subject: Joni Mitchell about Jewel, well not exactly but... ...this is a quote from Joni Mitchell in the most recent issue of Rolling Stone that I think does a better job explaining the recent debates on the list concerning Jewel changing, being over-produced, selling out, and all that, a better job explaining all that than anything I have yet seen. I was going to not post for a while, not until the release of Spirit at least. In reflection I totally agreed with Alan, Mike, and countless others who advised us to wait for the whole album before jumping to conclusions or judgment based on one song. But this quote from Joni Mitchell(the artist who Jewel has been compared to more often than any other) was just too good to pass up. Here it is. "Playing the game is repulsive to me. You're still gonna get dumped after a couple of years-then you're compromising yourself AND your dumped. The dumping is inevitable, so I'd rather not compromise. I'm in it for the musical adventure." -Joni Mitchell Hopefully Jewel is too. Sean Hooks "Today, however, when people speak of 'compromise,' what they mean is not a legitimate mutual concession or a trade, but precisely the betrayal of one's principles." - -Ayn Rand ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #571 ***************************
