(9) Title: Solo: Women Singer Songwriters In Their Own Words Author: Marc Woodworth and Emma Hanson Format: Paperback, 352pp Publisher: Dell Publishing Co., Inc. Publishing Date: 8/98 ISBN#: 0385324073 Barnes & Noble's Website Price: $13.56 (20% off, save $3.39) In-Stock: Ships 2-3 days Review and Commentary from Publisher's Weekly: The 19 musicians interviewed for this collection span a wide range of musical styles and socio-economic backgrounds, but there is a strong thread linking them, not only to each other but to anyone attempting to live a creative life. >From Rosanne Cash, who has been performing for over two decades, to relative newcomers like Rosanne Raneri and Mary Lou Lord, these women have all thought long and hard about why they do what they do and how to remain true to themselves while navigating the world of popular music. Many of them have had doubts about their talents, fears of performing and problems with repression and addiction, yet at some point they decided to stake it all on their passion for music. For example, Cash and Sarah McLachlan describe the struggle to go beyond previous achievements and delve deeper into their own experiences for new material. Ani DiFranco and Cassandra Wilson talk about the strength required to break through sexual and racial stereotypes, while Jonatha Brooke and Lucinda Williams discuss their commitment to more literary lyrics, even when that has limited their commercial success. Other topics discussed include religion, society's expectations of women (obsessions with body weight and trying to be the good daughter come up frequently) and the need for solitude in order to write, even when that means feeling lonely and isolated. These women's candid views shed light on issues confronting artists of every sort and will encourage any one who has been discouraged along the way. 170 original b&w photos by Emma Dodge Hanson. Review and Commentary from Publisher's Weekly: Narrator Jake Roedel is in his mid-teens when he joins the First Kansas Irregulars in 1861. During the next few years he sees, and commits, more than his share of Civil War atrocities. Most of the action takes place in Kansas and Missouri between the rebel Irregulars (bushwhackers) and the Union Jayhawkers, with some civilians caught in the crossfire. The studiedly cool Jake experiences loss (the deaths of his best friend, father and comrades) and love (the best friend's ``widow''); he also learns about tolerance from his contact with a nobly reserved black Irregular. There's plenty of hard riding, drinking and shooting, most of it leading to bloodshed. Jake's loyalty to the ``secesh'' cause is unquestioning and doesn't quite gibe with his growing unease amid the gore, or with his departure in the midst of the war for Texas with wife and child. The prose is occasionally rather pretentious, but this is a generally enjoyable coming-of-age novel by the author of Under the Bright Lights. First, I think I can now clear up the confusion over this: In a message dated 10/17/98 5:33:56 PM, michielvangorkum@wxs.nl wrote: >..tonight a girl performed a Jewel song on 'The Soundmix Show' where young >talents can sing their favorite song of their artist. >The presenter Henny Huisman told us that the next concert of Jewel >will be in Muziekcentrum Vredenburg in Ultrecht Holland and that >Jewel invited the Jewel imitator/performer of Foolish Games. So Alan, is >there something of news in your surroundings who can confirm this news ? >So do you happen to know any date, the presenter didn't told the public? I'm almost positive that all of you who saw this show were watching a repeat broadcast from LAST YEAR. Jewel was scheduled to play in Ultrecht last year & this is what the announcer gave away tickets to. I know nothing about this TV program but I do know that Jewel is definately not scheduled to play any concert in Holland for the remainder of 1998. She will be there in 1999 sometime. However, Jewel will be doing some European promotional work very soon! She will appear on several European TV shows toward the end of this month. The only ones I currently know about right now are these: In the UK, look for Jewel on the "This Morning" program on Thursday morning, October 29th. Jewel will also be doing several TV shows in Madrid, Spain on October 26th & 27th, but I don't know the name of the programs. (If you live in Spain, please contact me privately & post to the list anything you discover about this.) More European TV will be happening, but many things get scheduled last minute, so please post when you see other listings. I'll try to keep you updated, but its very difficult, because I'm extremely busy the next few weeks. So International EDAs will need to help each other on these things. The above things are all I currently know about in Europe. There are no public concerts planned on this promotional swing through Europe. Its strictly TV & radio, etc. I also realize MANY American EDAs are concerned about all the upcoming US TV. I have not posted any more dates (other than SNL) because many of those other shows (Rosie, Letterman, Tonight, etc) are not 100% confirmed. I'm sure you've all seen various dates posted in various places & this is leading to confusion (& way too many emails to me.....). DON'T WORRY. I will post ALL of those EXACT show dates when they are confirmed. Its senseless to post "speculative" dates. Rest assurred, the accurate dates will be posted in plenty of time to watch & set those VCRs. Have a good night, MrBB ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #563 ***************************
