Looking at the tracklist of the new cd, I can't help wondering about what will happen to the other unreleased songs... Ok, I'm positive the new songs will (at least) meet all of our expectations, but what will happen to gems like '1000 miles away', 'Flower', 'I'm Fading', 'Sometimes it be that way', 'Passing Time' to name a few... Will they ever see the light of day on an 'official release', or end up in the vault to be released twenty years from now on a '4cd box set filled with unreleased tracks' (like Springsteen does this year)... Now (starting to think wishful here) wouldn't these songs be great for b-sides on the singles, or hey why not put them on a full live album... ;-) Greetings, Alex from Holland.. ------------------------------ Date: 18 Oct 98 14:45:29 +0100 From: "Chris Groves" Subject: Billboard Magazine: Possible 1999 World Tour; Hands at #67 on US Airplay chart To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel@smoe.org Precedence: bulk A week or so ago an article was posted from Billboard Online about Jewel's new album, the full article, which follows, is contained in this week's (17 Oct 98) Billboard magazine on pages 16,21-22. I've highlighted the paragraphs which were missing from the online version, by surrounding them with '---->'. - ---------------------------------------- Jewel Refines Her Musical `Spirit' International Is Key Part Of Atlantic's Plans For Follow-Up BY CHUCK TAYLOR NEW YORK -- When Jewel's "Pieces Of You" was quietly released by Atlantic Records four years ago, both the label and the artist regarded it as a "little" project to support her endless stream of promotional touring. That was 10 million albums ago. And for Jewel, a seeming lifetime past. With the Nov. 17 release of her sophomore set "Spirit," the 24-year-old singer/songwriter at last has the chance to show it off the way she wants, after a string of achievements that at times made it seem like "Pieces" might just go on forever. The album spawned three tenacious hits, "Who Will Save Your Soul," "You Were Meant For Me," and "Foolish Games." By the time the latter two singles were released, Jewel was so displeased with the girlish vocals she'd first recorded that she insisted -- tearfully, it's been suggested -- on re-singing them for the radio versions. It was like that for nearly two years, as if Jewel felt she had to cover her tracks to prove that she'd grown as a musician and singer who had walked far down the road since recording "Pieces" when she was just 19. " 'Pieces Of You' I wrote accidentally. I didn't think it was anything," she says. "I wasn't comfortable with myself as a writer or as a musician. Now, after I've been out for four or five years, I've sort of mellowed out. I'm not as scared as I used to be." - ----> Adds Val Azzoli, co-chairman/co-CEO of the Atlantic Group, "The first album was one of those `Let's make an album and capture the essence of Jewel.' It wasn't so much about sales." And all the while, it just kept selling. <---- With her second effort, the singer/songwriter teamed with Madonna production maestro Patrick Leonard, the only one of 15 proposed producers whom Jewel green-lighted. His mission was to protect her folk/rock roots while incorporating the right blend of instrumentation to make her music more melodically ample and better suited to the demands of playing large live venues. The 13-track result is a divine marriage of smart, enterprising sounds that cradle Jewel's impressionable emotional base while broadening her modern-tinged pop savvy. Lyrically, the album demonstrates the difference between a girl and a woman. There's a unity not found on "Pieces," and while the artist remains fraught with vulnerability and sometimes dissatisfaction, this time she's not content to wallow in it. "I knew exactly what I wanted to do with this record and what I wanted it to do to people," says the artist, who is managed by Nedra Carroll (her mother). "I've felt tremendously lonely and afraid and all the things we feel, rational or irrational. There's no use for it. I wanted to write a record that was an antidote to all the things that made me worry in the world, so that it's comforting somehow." - ----> Atlantic executive VP/GM Ron Shapiro says the album demonstrates monumental growth in terms of artistic achievement and Jewel's perception of where she belongs in the world. "First, her voice is a human wonder. The songwriting is provocative and inspirational, and her collaboration with Pat Leonard shows that she absolutely wants an album that is sonically sound and pleasing," he says. "The second part is that on the last record, she spoke to your heart with hints of spirituality. On this record, that comes out so much stronger. We get a sense that this is an artist who wants to use art to make the world a better place." <---- The first single, "Hands," demonstrates a will to empathize. The midtempo, piano-driven track offers a call for hope in seemingly desperate times: "If I could tell the world just one thing/It would be that we're all OK/And not to worry 'cause worry is wasteful/And useless in times like these/I won't be made useless/I won't be idle with despair/I will gather myself around my faith/For light does the darkness most fear." A video, directed by Nick Brandt, is being shot for the song Oct. 11-12 in Los Angeles. The song arrives at radio Oct. 16. There are no current plans for a commercial single. - ----> "We've been waiting for this for so long," says J.R. Ammons, music director of mainstream top 40 WSTR (Star 94) Atlanta. "I'm sure it's going to get a bunch of airplay quick. We have yet to play anything from Jewel that didn't end up being an `A' for us. This is going to be an enormous release." <---- Aside from the track, Atlantic is already pointing toward several other potential singles, including "Jupiter," an organic tome to steadfast love ("You make me so crazy, baby/Could swallow the moon"); "Innocence Maintained," on protecting purity in a harsh world; and "What's Simple Is True," a beautiful back-porch yarn of true love. - ----> With saturation certain across the board at top 40, adult top 40, AC, and modern rock radio, retailers are practically dancing hand in hand over the potential of their fourth-quarter Jewel. "Obviously, her first album was terrific, and we think this will be huge, too" say Jim Litwak, executive VP of merchandising for Trans World Entertainment. "We're looking at Alanis Morissette, Celine Dion, R Kelly, Garth Brooks, and Jewel as being our top five through the year end." <---- To up the ante, the label is blanketing the nation with Jewel, including cover stories in Rolling Stone and Vogue and appearances on "Saturday Night Live" Nov. 14, "The Rosie O'Donnell Show" Nov. 16, "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" Nov. 19, and "Late Show With David Letterman" by early December. She'll also perform at the lighting of the Christmas tree at New York's Rockefeller Center, which NBC airs live across the country Dec. 2. In addition, her schedule includes European promotion in January, Australia and New Zealand in February, then a short U.S. tour that leads up to the release of her first film role, in the Ang Lee-directed "Absence Of Fear." Jewel plays an 18-year-old Civil War hero, very much of the earth, she says. The otherwise all-male cast includes Tobey Maguire and Skeet Ulrich. Jewel had already sidestepped music with "A Night Without Armor," a book of poetry published this past summer by HarperCollins, which rocketed to the top 10 of The New York Times nonfiction best seller list after she appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." In its 15th printing, it has shipped nearly 311,000 units. "With the album, I felt that what people perceived of me was very limited," she says. "With the book, I got to talk about where I grew up and how my mind perceives things and people. " And as for living the risks of leaving the cocoon of music, she adds, "I figure if I'm not on the edge of failure, I'm not being sufficiently challenged." - ----> Not surprisingly, Atlantic was at first guarded about its artist diversifying so soon after establishing her musical base. "We were all a bit hesitant initially," says Azzoli, "but then we decided we've broken the rules all along with Jewel, and she seems to have an innate ability to know what her fans want. "Kids are much more open to multitalented artists nowadays," he adds. "It made her more accessible, more worldly, and probably a better songwriter." Being more worldly is also a priority for the Atlantic camp with "Spirit." While Jewel sold 1.5 million copies of "Pieces Of You" outside of the U.S., gaining ground in Australia, Canada, Japan, and pockets of Europe, she hasn't become a global presence a la Morissette or Dion. "It's a major priority," Shapiro says. "The feedback on the single `Hands' from every territory and affiliate has been extraordinary. This is the one that's going to do it." There's also talk of a worldwide tour beginning in mid-1999, which would be handled by Rick Roskin at Creative Artists Agency. For his part, Azzoli sees an uncomplicated mission in the months ahead. "My hopes are that this album establishes Jewel as truly one of the great artists of our time. I want her to get the recognition that she so justifiably deserves." <---- - ------------------------- Also in this edition of Billboard in the 'Hot 100 Singles Spotlight' on page 103 was the following... - ------------------------ JEWEL LEAKS: It's hard to believe that more than a year has passed since "Foolish Games," Jewel's last single, was released to radio, especially since the song is still getting airplay to the tune of 8.2 million audience impressions. Her latest effort "Hands," wasn't supposed to hit the airwaves until Oct. 19, but KHKS Dallas somehow got a copy of the song early, started playing it, and shared the song with other stations owned by Chancellor Media Group. Airplay then spread like wildfire to 118 Hot 100-monitored stations. "Hands" has received enough early airplay to land at No.67 on Hot 100 Airplay with 13.4 million audience impressions. Among the stations that have "Hands" in significant rotation are KYSR and KIIS Los Angeles, KRBE Houston, KDWB Minneapolis, KKRZ Portland, Ore., and WFLZ Tampa, Fla. In response to the leak, Atlantic serviced the song to stations digitally via DG systems and rush-released CDs Oct. 7. - ------------------------ Chris Jewel, Pieces Of UK - http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~cmgroves/Jewel ------------------------------ Date: 18 Oct 98 15:06:43 +0100 From: "Chris Groves" Subject: Hands CD single found in London! Hello, Having spent the last 24 hours or so listening to the new single of Hands I can't wait for the release of the album in a few weeks. The three tracks on the single are excellent. Innocence Maintained in my view is the best of the three, but I think the Jewel Luddites amongst us will probably hate it ;-) I was wondering since the single states that Enter From The East is an acoustic version does this mean that the album version is with the band? For the Jewel collectors out there the CD single that I bought in London yesterday is probably the actual release version and not a special promo. Having compared notes with Michiel in Holland the two CDs that we have appear to be identical. The CD has a catalogue number of 7567-84404-2. I've added the lyrics to Innocence Maintained and Enter From The East, along with Hands to my web site. Although I don't think you'll notice many differences between these and the many live performances that you may have heard. Also I don't think it's been mentioned before but the CD itself has the lyrics to Hands printed on it, although these do differ slightly to what Jewel actually sings. That's all for now. To the nearly 6 dozen or so list members that in the early days of October that had posts (sent to jewel@smoe.org) rejected that had either asked for or offered to everyone online sound/Real Audio files of Hands, this is the reason why I could not send those posts on to the list. The song was leaked to that Dallas station, and had not been officially released. While Atlantic Records was scurrying to figure out what to do and when to do it, it was asked of me not to send on thoses posts offering sound files until the song was *officially* released for airplay, which was about a week later :-) Mike - Jewel list owner - - * If you are new to the Jewel list and need a helping hand, * or have a burning question about Jewel and/or the list, * The Jewel/EveryDay Angels List Homepage & Guide is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup * Many basic Jewel and list questions can be answered there :-) * * If you can't find the answer on the page have any list related * questions, please feel free to email me at ducksoup@spectra.net * or you can IM me on either of the AOL names below: * DuckOfPrey or WhyADuck55 on AOL or AOL Instant Messenger ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Oct 1998 17:06:03 +0200 From: Michiel van Gorkum Subject: jewel's new album and so on. hello fans, i am glad that i have found a compatriot named Chris, in London, who i met , for the first time two weeks ago to have the singlecd of Hands himself too! It's good . We both cannot keep listening to this lovely singlecd. It has the beautiful Hands on it, and the songs Innocence Maintained and Enter From the East. This version of Jewel Innocence Maintained is really adorable, and probably one of her best written songs in her life. Her latest single Hands is also unique, and Jewel is surprising us every time . The article that Chris has been posting is really a lovely one to read, cause you can find a lot of recent information in it about Jewel. It really is interesting stuff to read. What i want to tell you all is that i can't wait for her second album to be released. It's something unique, and we all look forward to it!! i am pretty sure, Jewel's new single Hands is getting a lot, a lot of aiprlay these days in Holland. I am not pretty sure in which musicvenues she will going to play in, i hope no packed stadium or something like that. That would be really not the point and the issue her fans would love to see happen. Ok, it's good for Jewel but not for the music and the unique voice Jewel has! Again i'm smiling of pleasure to have the single of Hands, now waiting patiently for the album Spirit and her world tour and promotional tour in holland!
