I've been sitting by listening to everyone makes points and observations and decisions about what's going on with Jewel today, is she getting better? Is she selling out? Is she really just Bob Dylan in a skirt? (jk) Well I've been silent for long enough as I hear people run around in circles and repeat some of the more obvious observations. Hopefully I'll be able to add something valuable to this whole thing and maybe even shed enough light on it that we can all just sit back and relax for a while. Let's start with the simple stuff. First of all, we really get into sitcky territory when we start comparing Jewel, or any other contemporary 90's artist to anyone, whether it be Bob Dylan or the Beatles or anyone at all who was strumming their guitar back in the 60's and 70's. The world of music and the world in general is a much different place now and society calls for a different attitude and response to the universe than it did back then. No one is really comparing Jewel to Mozart or Bach or Shakeaspear or Milton or any of those, because what people demanded different things out of their artists. Yes, they work in a diffrent genre and style of art than Jewel, I am well aware of that. Folk, or folk rock or whatever, is different that playwriting or composing a symphony. But folk has changed with the times, and that is my point. We musn't assume that folk is the same now as it was even four years ago when POY was release, never mind 30 years ago. Remember what alternative music was not that long ago? Absolutely nothing like it is now. So, right there we run into some problems. Beyond that, it is difficult to make a comparision between the change the Beatles or Dylan went through, because we can look back on their entire career and compare their earlier work with their later work, we haven't heard any of Jewel's later work yet. Only one single from only her second albulm for god's sake! Did Sgt. Pepper sound just like the White Albulm? Defintely not! But they are still regarded as being in the same period of the Beatles. Next. Obviously some change is always necessary for an artist to survive. This is quite simply not a bad thing. There is NO band or artist period, who was able to have a long career and lasting imipression without changing their product at some point. Some people will like the artist's earlier more, others will like the late stuff, others will say god I hate that guy! Others will say yes, the style changed but it was good when it started and good when it finished. Some day we may look back upon POY and Spirit and think that ya, that's back in the days when Jewel was young and still learning, or maybe we'll say that was back in the good ole days when Jewel was still great, or when Jewel still had an optomistic view on life. Or back before the big war (who knows when that could happen) that changed all music for ever, a la Vietnam. The world changes and with it, so do the artists. Can you imagine if the Beatles were singing Love Me Do during the Vietnam war?! Or Twist and Shout!? No. It was songs like Revolution and Come Together that had relevance at the time and they released what they wanted to say about the world at that time. You know what, it wouldn't even matter if people still like the Beatles today, because they made the comment they wanted to make, that had relevance, when it needed to be said. So how does this afffect Spirit and Hands, and whether Jewel is selling out or not, you ask? Well let's start with, Jewel doesn't need the money. And frankly, I don't really think she cares about the money that much. So she can't be selling out for cash. What about for fame, you say? Simple. Fame for an artist it not necessarily a bad thing, in fact it is rarely a bad thing, if the artist handles it in the right way. So Jewel writes a song that is called Hands, and has a relevant message. Right there, it's legimate and needn't be hated for any reason. But now people start freaking out because MAYBE it's different and MAYBE it is produced more than her central nucleus of fan's wants. ART. That is what is all centres around. What is art. Anything that can stimluate and emotional (and intellectual) response in those that can identify with it. In this respect it is always that goal of the artist to bring their message, their art, their medium to as many people as they can because every true artist wants to affect change by commenting on the universe. This is what Jewel is doing. She may have to make a song or two that are made for the masses. The masses matter a whole lot more than a handful (a large handful granted, but there are 6 billion of us on the planet remember) of fans on a mailing list. Hands and Spirit are and will be her comment on the world on the universe and on life. A Night Without Armour is the same deal. Her acting career?! The same. If she wants to paint for the Louvre. Same Deal! Write a play. SAME DEAL! They are all art, they are all expressioin they are all ways of getting her message, her views, her heart and soul and mind and body to as many people as she possibly can. That is what makes her a true artist. She wants to change the world. Plus, what makes her a great artist is that she knows what to say to affect that change, and knows how to get the greatest number of people to hear her. So is the list undergoing a renaissance? Yes. Why? Because Jewel is undergoing a renaissance. Why? Because the world is, and Jewel wants to be right there to help shape the new world that emerges. Thanks for listening. Adam T. Bunch. Hey, looks like another non-US-single after "Morning song"!(Sorry, but here in Germany we're not able to see Jewel that much on TV!). And "Spirit" will be released on November 16th. I'm looking forward to hearing it. If she changes her music to accommodate what the drooling, > slack-jawed masses want to hear, then she is a sell-out (which, > IMO, hasn't > happened yet, even if I don't like how Hands sounds). Just because Jewel may pull away from folk music, it does not mean that she is a sell-out. People grow and change. It is inevitable. She has changed from the girl who wrote the songs on PoY to the woman who the songs on Spirit. A change in musical styling (big it minor or grandiose) is to be expected. > she, IMO, will have surrendered the title of "Artist" and reduced herself > to a mere commodity. Ah, but she IS an artist! Singer, song-writer, poet, actress. I'd say that qualifies as an artist to me. Artist, entertainer, and performer and all good words to describe Jewel. What I don't want to see is her become a conformist. If that were to happen, THEN I would say that she "sold out". > I really don't care if she starts performing some > unnatural amalgam of Gregorian Chants and Ganxta Rap, as long as it's what Now THERE'S a combination for you! > SHE feels is an expression of herself, and not created as a "product" > designed specifically for mass-consumption. True enough. Do not conform to what others want. Conform only to what YOU want. May the Fortunes smile upon you... I personally like the bluish one on the official Jewel page better... Here's the page, so you don't have to search endlessly. http://www.atlantic-records.com/frames/frames.html?page=/frames/Artists_Musi c/index.html Then type in Jewel, then go to Discography, then to Spirit. The picture's not bad, she just looks really sad or stoned or something... I was just wondering if they'd decided on an official cover or not, and if so, if that's the one. Thanks! Hi, You all should check out Atlantic's site, if you haven't lately. Theres some very nice black & white photography of Jewel you haven't seen before. I'm assuming some of these shots may be used in the new album graphics, but since I've not seen the final graphics yet, I really don't know. Have a look at: http://www.atlanticrecords.com I tell ya, its a weird thing reading all these fears & expectations many EDAs have about "Spirit". I'm gonna do this last ramble & then I'm gonna try to stay silent opinion wise, until release. I'm doing this because I think a lot of needless worry is going on. There's a few things I can say without any doubt in my mind. Number one is that I love the album. I also know that ANYONE who's loved Jewel's previous work, is gonna AT LEAST find parts of "Spirit" that they like even better. This is regardless of what your preferences are about production. Since there are solo acoustic tracks, even the people who love ZERO production can't complain too much. As far as lyric content goes, It hasn't really changed. She's always been writing about love, thoughtfulness & the search for inspiration & spirituality. Other than her amazing voice (which has gotten even BETTER), isn't that primarily what drew many of you (not all, of course) to her songs in the first place? I'll end my thoughts by saying there are a few things on this album that are gonna blow away EVERYONE who happens to have ears. So there! ;-) OK, back to bizness. Several have been writing me about the official website lately & even asking if BiBi is OK! YES, Bibi is just fine! She's just extremely busy working on graphics for various Jewel projects, continuing her work on video projects & of course involved in the album prep work among other things. So....the website is a bit behind. But worry not! Lots of very cool things will be happening soon at the official site too, so stick around! And while I'm on the subject, I hope Bibi's busy tonight having nothing but fun! Heres a toast to BiBi. May she have a very Happy Birthday today! My view on hands is I think it is a really good song, I don't think ppl should judge her, until they hear the rest of the album. I won't be judging it till November 17th when i go and buy it. I can't wait to hear the rest of it. It may be different but its still jewel, and the lyrics for hands kicks ass too. i have already done an art project on it. well i'm gonna cut it short now tanks for the time lates yal Markie B if anyone has anything to say to me , just email me privately ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #560 ***************************
