In reference to MADwand, here's what I have found the meaning to be (obviously, it doesn't mean that it is exactly what the song is supposed to mean): OK, so I've picked up that the "My hands are small I know/But they're not yours they are my own" chorus is just backing up the rest of the lyrics. The song, and/or perhaps Jewel, is trying to say that we have the power to do things to make the world a better place, but we claim that we're too small to make a change or that someone else is holding us back (a reference to them being "not yours they are my own). With our hands, which also works on a metaphorical level in reference to our body, soul, and mind, we can give people the clothes off of our backs, we can pray, we can reach out to people and help them rebuild anything from a home to their life. And, in reference to people making excuses as to why some don't show compassion or do things for others, the song says: "I/We are NEVER broken. That's what it says to me, and, by the way, I am moved by the song - and Jewel. (Hands) My radio station finally played "Hands". I was driving in my car, switching stations hoping to catch "Hands" on one (even though I heard it on Real Audio many times) and then I turn to my favorite radio station where it would normally be if I hadn't been switching around, and I hear "Coming up we have blah blah, blah blah, and a new one by Jewel -- it's called 'Hands'". ANd I was like "WOOOPIEEEE" and I was about two miles from home so I began driving REALLY fast. However, I hit a red light. Tempted to run it, I decided that if I got in a car accident, I would not get home on time so I just toughed it out. When I got home, I literally jumped out of my car, ran to my room, and rewinded my now full blank tape to try to find some song I could record over. I pressed record when music began again but it was not Jewel. So I took another tape and decided to tape over "My Favorite Mistake" because I had three version sof it recorded already and plus I was giong to buy the CD. I waited and waited and Jewel did not play. Hmm...maybe the radio staiton in the car isn't the one on here? But, it WAS! Finally, "Hands" played. It sounded so different on a stereo. I heard more things than I did on the computer. I didn't even realize there were background vocals (Nedra?) during the "In the end, only kindness matters" part. Oh, well, I'm really excited to finally be one of the "I've heard Hands" people FINALLY! I am now officially able to voice my opinion... "Hands" rocks! By the way, the D.J. said "That's a new one by Jewel called 'Hands'. She has a new CD coming out in November called 'Spirit'. By the sounds of it, it'll probably do pretty good." See, he likes it so stop analyzing the song. IT IS GOOD! I don't post usually but this is a cool observation. Many fly-by-nighters have left & moved on to the next thing & us hardcores are still here. "Spirit" will be a good record. Of course It may be mercilessly torn apart because the music landscape is undergoing a drastic change. The point of this is that since we may once again be the target of ridicule it's important we stick together instead of squabbling over semantics. After all we're family aren't we? By the way I prefer to compare the growth of Dee Snider to that of Jewel (both make me smile).
