Enjoy, MrBB "HANDS" lyrics by Jewel Kilcher/music by Jewel Kilcher & Patrick Leonard If I could tell the world just one thing It would be that we’re all OK And not to worry ‘cause worry is wasteful And useless in times like these I won’t be made useless I won’t be idle with despair I will gather myself around my faith For light does the darkness most fear My hands are small, I know But they’re not yours, they are my own But they’re not yours, they are my own And I am never broken Poverty stole your golden shoes But it didn’t steal your laughter And heartache came to visit me But I knew it wasn’t ever after We’ll fight, not out of spite For someone must stand up for what’s right 'Cause where there’s a man who has no voice There ours shall go singing My hands are small I know But they’re not yours, they are my own But they’re not yours, they are my own And I am never broken In the end only kindness matters In the end only kindness matters I will get down on my knees, and I will pray I will get down on my knees, and I will pray I will get down on my knees, and I will pray My hands are small I know But they’re not yours, they are my own But they’re not yours, they are my own And I am never broken My hands are small I know But they’re not yours, they are my own But they’re not yours, they are my own And I am never broken We are never broken We are God’s eyes God’s hands God’s mind We are God’s eyes God’s hands God’s heart We are God’s eyes God’s hands God’s eyes We are God’s hands We are God’s hands ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Oct 1998 19:12:58 -0400 From: "glenda" Subject: Jewel Concerts Hey, I know someone out there has been to a jewel concert. Hi, "Hands" was written earlier this year, however that line (In the end only kindness matters) is something Jewel has been saying for several years. Also for those rushing to thier ANWA books to find that line in "Father of a Deaf Girl", you won't find it, because it is unrelated to that poem. Along with other stuff, that Jewel quote just happens to be on the bottom of the same page as that poem in the above mentioned Tiny Lights Tour book. People are critisizing the "overproduction" of hands like it was 1993 and Jewel was still singing in coffee shops. In case you people haven't noticed it's 1998, and though some of us would still love to see a natural alaskan girl alone on stage with her acoustic guitar let us come back to reality and realize that everything must evolve. Take any band out there and they've no doubt modified there sound in the past 5 years. Take any PERSON out there and they've gone through personal style modifications (ex. 1993 brings me back into grade 7 when plaid was cool -- sorry to anyone I offended with the previous statement) Maybe the motivations behind the change we're partially success driven but isn't that what we wish of "our" Jewel, SUCCESS??? Would we rather have her still starving in her van just so her music would remain personally ours? IN LIFE WE CHANGE OR WE BECOME YESTERDAYS NEWS. WE LEARN AND PROSPER, STRETCH OUR LEAVES TO THE CHANGING SUN, OR WE STAY COMFORTABLE IN THE SHADE AND WILT. Anyone who doesn't like the progression of Jewels music has the right to their own opinion, but not the right to discredit Jewel for progressing. We could pick "hands" apart till it's a pile of mush, but I'll choose to enjoy it as a pretty ripe tasty piece of fruit. love you all anyway, Kristin *The ^UP^ Angel in a Down World* ************************************************************** *There's a changing constellation of balls as we are playing * * I see orion and say nothing the only thing I can think of * * saying is .... * * Ani Difranco * ************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Oct 1998 20:27:10 EDT From: MAXMOUZE@aol.com Subject: NJC: Real angels We have some real angels on this list. I am very proud of how open-minded this list is. So many people are against prejudice, something which shows maturity and kindness in a person. I also received a lot of intelligent and helpful replies to my predicament. There truly are some special human beings reading among us. I love you, Everyday Angels! Jewel is lucky to have supporters like you guys. - -- Mark ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Oct 1998 20:17:07 EDT From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: Re: Jewel Journal @ local bookstore... Hi again, I checked on this & Kristen is correct. Borders books do have copies of this & so does Barnes & Noble now. They probably do not stock it with other music books or biographies since it doesn't fit in those categories, so ask a salesperson to assist you if needed. In the case that they don't have it in stock, either of these mega-book chains can probably order a copy for you locally. For identification purposes, this is the "Jewel Edition of the Rhino Journal" made by Running Rhino & Co. And of course its always available at the Jewel Store at her website (http://www.jeweljk.com/). I hope thats helpful. This is her new sound. Get over it! Stop criticizing Jewel for making a chance in music. Criticize the change itself but not Jewel for making the change. She's not selling out, she's just becoming more radio-playable. How many times do you hear an acoustic guitar only on a song that's played on the radio? Let's save that for concerts. - -- Mark ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Oct 1998 22:10:07 EDT From: DMJSMIG@aol.com Subject: I finally heard it: ) I know that the past week everyone has been writing in and saying how they have heard "Hands". I have heard the good and the bad about this song before I even heard it. So I had no clue what to think. But the other night I called my radio station WIXX, and requested Jewel's new song "Hands" to be played. Well not only did he play the song he put me on the radio. It was bomb. My reaction of the song was suprised. I pretty much heard negitive views on her new song, but I was suprised because I thought it was amazing. It has a great beat to it, one that I could dance to with a smile. Plus in certain parts of the song she does bending of the notes, almost sounds like little yoldels. I loved it. I can't wait to hear the rest of her CD. Any way just wanted to tell you all of what I thought of it, even though I am sure everyone has heard enough of the review of this song. CLB's next album will be an independantly released CD recorded at the San Francisco LRT performance earlier this year. Recorded on 1/9/98, this particular show was unique among all the LRT gigs that Cindy Lee has participated in. On this particular show, she was accompanied by the extraordinary ex-Garage Orchestra cellist Renatta Bratt. It was a reunion of sorts because CLB & Renatta hadn't performed together in almost two years. I can testify there was a great spontaneous energy hapnin that night & these performances will definately delight all CLB fans. The CD will include several stripped down versions of Garage Orchestra favorites, vintage songs from her anti-folk days,as well as brand new material. And of course a healthy dose of LRT hilarity. The tracklist will be: 1. Diane 2. She Had Everything 3. Family Tree 4. Damn, I Wish I Was a Man 5. This Way Up 6. UFO Suite 7. Witness 8. I Wonder Why 9. Look at That Grin 10. Gary Handeman 11. Every SomeoneTonight The title of this CD will simply be "Living Room 16" as this was the 16th LRT gig (out of almost 50 LRT gigs featuring many other artists too) since we began all this, two summers ago. This CD will be available through direct mail order in North America & although I don't have the info yet, a European distributer will release it over there as well. The CD itself is mastered & the artwork is really all thats left to do at this point. All Cindy Lee Berryhill fans will love these performances & it'll provide many more people with a taste of the Living Room Tour. I'll keep you updated as release day approaches. It should be fairly soon. MrBB ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #545 ***************************
