Thus, they are very high quality clones of the original material. Scrupulous people HAVE posted entire CDs on web sites in MP3 format. I am convinced (make that 100% certain) that someone somewhere WILL have Jewel's Spirit available in MP3 format on a web site before it's legally released on November 16th (some overseas areas) & 17th. It would be naive to believe otherwise. To the folks that defend their usage and posting of MP3 files (particularly MP3s of "Hands"): I understand you when you say you'll take down the MP3 files when the album is released. I understand your intention is honorable and good. However, that is not the point. Over the course of the last year and more, record companies and the RIAA (Recording Industry Artists Association) have been quite actively seeking out and closing down web sites and some mailing lists for violating particular copyright infringements that they presently want to enforce. One of them is a fight against MP3 files of copyrighted material. They HAVE shut down many web sites and some mailing lists that refused to co-operate. I happen to know from very reliable sources that Atlantic Records (Jewel's recording label) and the RIAA have been periodically monitoring this list. (based on research I've done on this matter, I am 100% convinced it is true...there is no question in my mind) With advance/review copies of "Spirit" making it's way to radio stations, magazines and other forms of the musical media as I type, I am totally sure that this monitoring WILL be happening now and in the foreseeable future. I do not know if they only have their sights set on MP3 files of material from Pieces Of You, Spirit and other released material from other recording artists. No one her knows for certain, not even MrBB. We can all only speculate. Considering this, THAT is the reason I had banned and after this unmoderated period ends will continue to ban all discussion of MP3 files. The negatives far and away outweigh the positives. (I'll be d*mned if I'll let this list's existence be endangered because of MP3 files....I don't want to see individuals innocently get into hot water either, people HAVE had their MP3 sites shut down) Even if I knew for a fact that Atlantic and the RIAA were only after MP3s of released material and didn't give a rats' patootie about stuff like personal recordings made at Jewel concerts, I don't have the time, energy nor resources to check out web sites submitted in posts. I'd have to check out each and every file to see if it were released material or not. So, to play it safe MP3s will again have to be banned from discussion on Jewel@smoe.org. The ban will begin when the unmoderated period ends. We have far too much to lose to do otherwise. That kinda hurt my feelings, but it's probably my own fault for seeming so caustic all the time. Anyhow, I wouldn't have replied to this otherwise, since most everything that can be said on the subject has been said... but since my name came up it would be remiss of me to stay silent. It seems to me that Jewel believes in god, not God. Sort of a natural, all pervasive force that connects everything. This is speculative, but I don't get the feeling she believes that this force has a personality, as it tends to in most organized deistic religions, but she was brought up Christian (to an extent) and there are obvious anthropomorphic metaphors to be applied to the world's controlling force, and anyone who's taken a good look at Christianity can find excellent fodder for these metaphors within that sphere. It is laregely my own speculation, though, that leads me to these opinions, and although I know everyone has this notion that I think I know everything, it's not the case and I'm well aware that my opinions are my own. If someone else knows better than I do, please - take issue. We're all humans of the same caliber, dammit. OH yeah, I do want to say this, though - whether Jewel is atheist/nihilist or a cloistered nun, I don't really give a flying jump off a rolling cliff. Whatever makes her happy &/or fulfilled, that's her thing. I'm concerned about the music, mostly.
