In this culture people mistakenly line up in two camps. Love it or hate it. It rocks or it sucks. Titanic is not the best movie ever made nor is it worthless garbage. Jewel is not perfect and angelic and superhuman but she is also not a fake poser sellout. People like that Layaway chick and their kin(usually short pudgy girls who wear too much black eye make-up and combat boots) who are all like indie for the sake of being indie and who think that listening to Ani DiFranco, Sleater Kinney, and every other marginally artist who puts out a vinyl 45 are just as bad as those people who are like Jewel is perfect she's doesnt ever have sex she's an angel she helps people and isn't altruism a great thing. This isnt chess. There arent two sides, two extreme camps into which you must place your devotion. That is an immature concept. Titanic does have stupid dialogue at times and a manipulative love story but its also a brilliantly directed film(any film student will probly say its the best directed since Schindlers List) that accurately portrays a tragic moment in history and is an emotional film. Jewel does do some very corporate things at times and conforms and compromises but she is also phenomenally talented and a brilliant writer who Bob Dylan himself compared to himself and Joan Baez and she is capable of putting on an incredible live performance but she is also unpredictably eratic in her concerts as of late in varying between excellent and marginal.
