The album is the acclaimed singer-songwriter's first new release since her multi-platinum 1995 debut, PIECES OF YOU. All thirteen songs on the album were written by Jewel with the exception of the first single, 'Hands,' which was co-written with producer Patrick Leonard (best known for his work with Madonna). 'Hands' is already being played by radio stations nationwide, having received 1,800 spins in less than a week. SPIRIT was recorded earlier this year at Groove Masters in Santa Monica, CA, and at Oceanway Studios in Hollywood. The album sees Jewel accompanied by a core group of both session musicians and fellow singer/songwriters. Among them are Jude Cole on acoustic guitar, Ednaswap bassist Paul Bushnell (meredith Brooks, Mary Lou Lord, Cleine Dion), vetran Afro-Cuban jazz percussionist Luis Conte (Madonna, Lyle Lovett, the Corrs), and drummer Brian Macleod (Wire Train, Sheryl Crow). Other musicians appearing on SPIRIT include pedal steel guitarist Marty Rifkin (Victoria Williams. Tom Petty, Dwight Yoakum), drummer Vinnie Colaiuta and gutarists Josh Clayton (ex-School of Fish) and James Harrah (Vonda Shepard, John Prine, Wilson Phillips) as well as Red Hot Chilli Peppers bassist Flea, who performs on 'Barcelona.' 'I knew exactly what I wanted to do with this record and what I wanted it to do to people,' Jewel recently told Billboard. 'I wanted to write a record that was the antidote to all the things which made me worry in the world, so that it's comforting somehow.' The complete track listing of SPIRIT is: Deep Water What's Simple Is True Hands Kiss the Flame Down So Long Innocence Maintained Jupiter Fat Boy Enter From The East Barcelona A Life Uncommon Do You Absence Of Fear (Additional title: 'Little Bird'). That's it. What's this about Little Bird though? Did they just add that? Mike, you know? And Flea on Barcelona?!?!?!? I think I'm gonna faint. Not to mention Ednaswaps' bassist! Alright...patience =) Take care... Hi all, Oh well.....I guess the "EDA surprise" is unfortunately out. :-( Yes, Jewel recorded & included this "secret track" as a surprise for you. :-) I intentionally have not mentioned this for obvious reasons..... Many of you will know this song from Lenedra's version at Jewelstock. Its a lullabye that she often sang Jewel to sleep with as a child. And yes, Flea plays an awesome bassline on "Barcelona". Hi everyone. I found this article in Pop Star: The Hottest Guys In Music. (Steve and Jewel stuff starts in the end of the Liam and Noel Gallagher article) Both Gallaghers quieted down when a Jewel video came on MTV. The thought she was a "tasty bird". She's okay. But i'm more interested in the hot, shirtless guy in her video"You Were Meant For Me". That's Steve Poltz, her ex-boyfriend and the leader of the San Diego-based Rugburns. He's got his own solo album out now called One Left Shoe. And he's also the subject of many of the romantic poems in Jewel's book A Night Without Armor. The day I meet him, I noticed that the sholder- length hair I remembered so well from the video has been cut short! I'm dissapointed, but he still looks good. He is tall and slender and very boyish. Sadly, he has his shirt on through the entire interview. But a girl can dream, can't she? "We shot that video shortly after Jewel Sean Penn broke up," Steve says in an accent that screams : Surfer! Dude! Sean, who dated Jewel before he married actress Robin Wright, had directed the first video for the song. But it wasn't as good as the one featuring Steve. "It was very emotional for her, but I think she did a great job in it. She's still one of my best friends. We surf and write songs together." In fact, Steve cowrote "You Were Meant For Me" and plays guitar on her record. Lovely Jewel returned tha favor by cowrit- ing some new songs for his album and singing backup on his solo record. Written By : Henna Christian That's it. I hoped you liked it. There is also a picture of Steve from his album, One Left Shoe. Although local radio stations are not playing it here, I did find a place on the internet to get it. After listening to it though, I am really confused. I know that people on this list have said Jewel doesn't beleive in God or in a specific god, but she does use God a lot in "Hands." Why is this? I truely do believe that she does believe in God and is somewhat Christian, but I could be wrong. I know some people will get all upset for me asking this question (Mr. McDonald) but it is a good one. Patrick Leonard is a great producer. Honest, I'm not saying he isn't. I just don't think Madonna's old sound was terribly good. The 1980s was even worse for pop music than the 1990s have been, in my opinion. This is, of course, only my opinion (and it's not a solid rule, even), I just meant that old Madonna isn't a very good credit to a resume, musically. Commercially, well that's another story. (again, I'm not saying Madonna isn't a good singer or songwriter, I just think that the 80s studio sound was wack) > If you have seen him on the Behind the Music: Madonna, he spoke out. Madonna > is always portrayed as "slutty" or "dirty" but I don't think that is the case. I love Madonna, I don't think she's a "slut" or "dirty" at all... actually I find those terms are generally applied in ignorance, and just aren't very good additions to anyone's vocabulary. > This doesn't even have to do with her, this is music which we are talking > about, not who is producing the album. If Pat Leonard was not a good Wrong, man, I'm not talking about the music - I'm talking about the production. What I'm worried about for this next album is mainly production ethics. I know that Jewel is an excellent composer. But who's doing the arrangements? Who's manning the mixing boards? Who's applying effects? Will they chorus the guitar? (euch) Will they compress & reverberate the drums? (euuuuchhh) I am confident that the songs are going to be good in essence, I'm mainly worried about the sound we're going to get. Oh yes, and slightly nervous about the lyrics, but not too bad. > producer, why would Madonna be around for 15 years? This is not some hate Popularity, longevity and things like that seem to be totally seperate from quality. Brilliant musicians have long careers (sometimes), but so do no talent, crap musicians. I imagine this is also true with producers. ^_^ | Jesse Dangerously http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~ad309 | subterranean seraph 16 Trust Everyone | ad309@chebucto.ns.ca Ekam Sat, Viprah Bahudha Vadanti | ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Oct 1998 23:23:22 EDT From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: NJC-Elizabeth Hummel @ Java Joes this Sunday Hi, For you San Diego EDAs, Elizabeth Hummel returns to Java Joe's in Ocean Beach this Sunday night at 9PM. (I'm not sure if this ever got sent, my ISP is having mail server problems). - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I know what you're thinking. Oh no, another "I heard Hands!!." Well, almost. Here's my story. I was at my school's Recreation Center working out. I was on a machine, and I hear the DJ say, "Here's Jewel's new song, Hands." I immeadiately dropped my stack of weights and moved to a better speaker. I couldn't hear the song real well, but it sounded as good as everyone has been saying. After the song had been on for about 20 seconds, guess what happens next? One of the trainers there CHANGES THE STATION!! Now in a testosterone(sp?) filled room, you can't just run over to the desk, and ask them to turn Jewel back on. :-) So, I was forced to face the disappointment. Oh well, another day, another day.
